Replacing the 300tdi head gasket PART 1- bolts gaskets and sequence.

Changing the cylinder head gasket is easy enough to do if you approach the task take in a logical sequence. Plenty of technical information in this tutorial. Cylinder head gasket 300tdi is the same as the 200tdi. Thanks once again for making these videos Chris, all signs are pointing to a failed gasket on my 300tdi Disco so I'll be doing this shortly. My heart wants to just throw in a 2.8 TGV but my head can't handle the cost of that idea!

I can only hope! Would probably get the Simtek guys to put in a TDV8! I checked out that video and will re-watch a few others, I have a similar big square so will use that. Not looking forward to it, sniff test didn't detect exhaust gas so I'm expecting a crack. Oil Spy said no coolant in the oil too but it really pressurises. Will it take a skim? Don't know if it's been done before, I suppose the number is in the manual. It's around here somewhere I just need to dig it out.

At 6:40 you show protrusion 0.71 to 0.8 requires 3-hole gasket. Parts suppliers are stating the ERR5263 3-hole gasket is 1.5mm. Please clarify. Thank you.

Ive taken the head of my defender 300tdi 1997 after 360,000km , the gasket on the drivers end is split i near the corners. something must have fallen down the cylinder is there is damage on the number 3 piston also the head, the pistons move about 1 mm back and forth ,thinking if that is normal, i will do a drain test next, any advise would be great.thanks

Well I guess we could buy in some land rover logo stickers and plonk them on the cheap boxes to make ourselves feel better? It's terrible but those that don't know will probably never agree that such things are one and the same. Ah well ... Anyway ... enough rambling ... I want the second excellent instalment of the head work ... its almost making me want to tackle my own head gaskets again ... :P

Multilayer. Everything is that sort of gasket now. Proven to be reliable.

I've always wondered about the genuine and after market head gaskets ... I could never tell the difference either which forces you to a natural conclusion ...

YOU CANNOT RE-USE HEAD BOLTS ON THESE ENGINES. THE OFFICIAL ENGINE MANUAL LRL0070, LRL0003, LRL0081 CLEARLY STATES REMOVE HEAD BOLTS AND DISCARD. THEY ARE TORQUE TO YIELD "STRETCH" BOLTS, THESE SHOULD NEVER BE RE-USED. The other major land rover workshop manual states they can be re-used up to 5 times, this is a mistake. The MAIN CAP bolts can be used up to 5 times, NOT the head bolts. Re-use them at your peril, new bolts are very cheap, don't risk it. (22 years working on Land Rovers mechanic)

I have onwe of the new style multi-layer head gaskets but the hole for the oil way that passes from block to head at the front injector side do not line up. I'm concerned that the oil will not flow to the rocker shaft. Any advice?

+Laurie Hurman Yes I have noticed that on those gaskets ,...even one supplied by Land Rover. They should line up once compressed.

I just picked up a 200tdi that has sat in a paddock under a tree for 5 years, it started up first try but it's blowing (exhaust?) out the back of the head, it feels like it's coming from the gasket kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH6bk2awrJWVfbs have you come across anything like this before? seems odd because it runs fine and there's no sign of coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant etc
