Replacing the Oil Cooler on a 5.4 2001 F250 Super Duty

The oiler cooler on my plow truck got corroded and starter a big leak. Let's swap it out and get the truck back on the road... Well, that was the plan until we hit a snag at the end...

Thanks for the advice. My truck is leaking oil into the antifreeze and a master mechanic told me to replace that first before I replace the engine.

Yeah, the inside of your cooler could be shot and letting the two mix. This is a cheap and relatively easy repair. Certainly better than swapping motors! Good luck!

Thanks for the video! I have the same year truck. I blew a brake line and when I popped the hood I noticed that I had oil in my coolant overflow. Turns out it was coming from the oil cooler (thankfully not that head gasket). I pulled the the lines from the cooler, drained it and hose clamped them together so that I could fill it back up with water and detergent to clean up the coolant system. With the lines still detached I turned on the the truck and let her warm up. Sure enough, oil started coming out of the oil cooler from hose nipples for the coolant lines. No water in the oil because the oil pressure is higher than the coolant pressure. I got lucky. Funny, while I was under the truck I managed to bump into those same power steering lines that were leaking on your truck. One of them started leaking all over me. I also thought they were transmission lines at first! Were yours leaking from where they are mounted to that plastic clip? That's where my pin hole was. Thanks again!

Put your oil lines on 1st, it makes it a lot easier. Then install the cooler.

Disconnect the hoses and unscrew it with the big Allen key/socket I mentioned. I forgot to film that part, but you just pull it off at that point.

Have oil running down the 2 coolant lines so I don't see where else it could be coming from. I'll find out this weekend after I replace the oil cooler. Thanks again for the video👍🏼💪🏽😎

At 07:30 I explain how to remove it. Installation is the reverse of removal. It's pretty simple and straightforward. This one, I had a hard time with. It's supposed to be 14mm but it seemed to be in-between sizes (crummy quality control apparently, or cheapo parts).

I bypassed mine to get home off the road and now I don't remember which hose goes on top and which is on the bottom. Does any have a diagram or suggestion on how to identify which goes where?

That’s a good question. I don’t have an answer, and I don’t have the truck anymore so I can’t even crawl underneath for you. Theoretically, it shouldn’t matter since it’s just a simple in/out system. Don’t hold me to that, but that’s what my gut says.

Sure can. If the inside of the cooler got damaged or cracked for some reason, you could definitely get coolant and oil mixing together.

Maybe T70 will work, I don’t know off hand how large that is. But I can tell you with 100% certainty that my bolt was Allen and not Torx.
