Excellent video, thanks! Does the check engine light go away on its own or does it have to be reset? (after changing the glow plugs)
@gregs_garage3 жыл бұрын
thanks. I think it went out by itself. But I can't recall 100%. honestly OBD2 readers are so cheap now I'd just have one on hand regardless. Handheld or bluetooth with smartphone app. With VW you can't read all codes and it doesn't always work (get VCDS for that), but usually it's enough to see basic faults and reset CEL.

Had an issue with my vehicle not firing up had to get the breakdown team out to get it going then the glow plug light flashed for a second earlier today! Do you reckon that’s a good reason as to why I’m having issues starting the engine. Thank you good video explaining to a complete newbie to working on my car

So, my Jetta 4 1.9tdi doesn't have power to go forward especially when it's on gear number 2 in an incline area. Is possible that it might be the glow plugs?

A way to test a glow plug is with a test light. Ground clamp on positive battery terminal and probe on glow plug post. If test light lights up the glow plug is good.

I think so, although the weather improved so it's hard to tell. Good for peace of mind to have new ones in anyway.

By changing the glow plugs did this have a improved acceleration and fuel efficiency?

no, glow plugs help startup. They have nothing to do with acceleration or fuel efficiency.

Generally, the harness goes bad and the glow plugs are fine. Poor design, plastic becomes brittle. It's a bit of a job to replace it in its entirety, up to the main harness, but can be done. I did that instead of cutting/splicing into the old harness. That bad harness was what was throwing the codes, in my case, not the glow plugs.

I replaced them, blew out a week later, did this 2 times. Replaced glow plug relay, did not help. What can be the problem?

Glow plugs one and three are almost impossible to remove if you don't have that long extender bar.
@christianworthinton80002 жыл бұрын
First, throw the plastic cover away. It prevents you from seeing any problems. A multimeter set to Ohms resistance will detect a bad glow plug. A reading of 1 means it's burnt out. + to the terminal, negative to ground.
@gregs_garage2 жыл бұрын
the plastic cover supports the oil dipstick and reduces noise. Do not test glow plugs - replace them they are cheap maintenance items.
