A lot of people suddenly got a lot poorer when the industrial sector started failing. Then 2008 hit and even more people got even poorer, even more suddenly. While all this is going on, the political right is sabotaging all attempts to improve matters for the people hurt by all this while loudly yelling about how everything that goes wrong is the fault of their opponents, immigrants, and insufficiently severe conservativism. Somewhere in there, 9/11 happens and everything starts to get more paranoid and militaristic. Following all of these events, the people who just got their careers pulled out from under them and watched their country take a dive into a catastrophic conflict spend the better part of a decade being bombarded with propaganda about how bad everything is while the elite of the political left are portrayed as monsters who insult them and ignore their problems. Then a narcissist says everything they want to hear very loudly while opposed by a walking avatar of the political norm and corporate power. (Written very late at night, I hope it's not too incoherent)

I'm an American who moved to France 20 some years ago because my husband is French. Before my move to France, I was an ICU nurse, and later a Teacher in nursing in 2 different states. I THOUGHT I had good health care at the hospital I worked in (University of Michigan), and later (Hahnemann Universty in PA). But when moving to France, I found out what REAL health care was! My husband's company was appalled at the cost of our daughter's birth ($8000 for an uncomplicated birth back in 1979). My daughter who had complications in the US with the birth of her first born in 2008. It cost her $130,000! Even though I told the doctors there was a problem and they didn't listen! Obama wanted to have a system like in many European countries. However, the Tea-Baggers took over Congress and blocked him! NOW, they are going to take away MORE from those in need. Glad I live in Europe! Have gotten a lot of nasty comments. I pay more taxes here then in the US, while still paying US taxes! The health care system here makes sure that when a doctor prescribes a drug, they get a generic or pay the difference. There are other insurance choices (companies pay for them or you buy your subsidies) to extra coverage for things the main health care doesn't provide. Doctor visits here are determined by who you chose as a doctor. They can run from 30 euros a visit to 110 euros. Theose who can't pay more go to the 30 euro doctors. While others pay for the higher priced doctors (mostly doctors with higher degrees). However, no ONE misses out on care. My general doctor is a 30 euro doctor; but, she sends me to others for needed care. If you can't pay, the government handles it. I had to spend 3 days in the hospital to determine if I had a cardiac arrest. Turned out to be gastric. BUT, I only paid 100 euros! The Republican bill, which gives tax breaks to the rich, will ensure that people who NEED care won't get it! You need taxes to pay for GOOD health care!

Erik Marcinik The problem with "tax and spend" is that it's got such a negative connotation. You have to tax, but that which is spent must be spent on things which benefit the people. NASA does that by ensuring our orbiting information infrastructure. The military provides our defense. Obamacare ensures a healthy population. The problem? We can't be sure our tax dollars are being spent wisely. We need to streamline what we have but keep it functional.

The pictures are taken by a Professional Photographer working for the National Park Service, and he's taken the photographs for the past two or three inaugurations. The Park Service then usually releases one photo, this time a freedom of info request was put in requesting all photos to be released. There are also time requirements about when the photographs are taken, I think the images are taken as the president-elect is being sworn in. There was an interesting program on TV explaining it, just as Trump questioned the turn out.

Yes. I agree. I read a comment about a year ago along the similar train of thought. It was from a conservative that said something like, 'you can't force someone to give when they are not prepared to give'. I think he was referring to having a more democratic socialist federal government system, where American chip into together to help take care of each other, like through Universal Healthcare, College and University Tuition, and more humanitarian programs. I appreciated his candor and honesty. He did not agree to doing this. I can see what he means. It is not healthy to "force" anything on anyone. It's far better to encourage and empowers others to become courageous enough and humble enough in their own humanity to willingly chip in and help others out, unconditionally, without asking "what is in it for me?"

So basically, if you're an American, you better not get sick! I'm so glad that's one thing I don't have to worry about in Canada. With the type of job I have here, I'd probably would have a great insurance coverage in the USA....but still, what if I got fired...what if the company shuts down....what about my relatives that don't have insurance. The USA spent trillions in wars AND now wants to spend billions building a wall...and yet, it's the only western country that doesn't have universal healthcare.

What is wrong with the idea that people's life outcomes are dependent on the social factors throughout their upbringing and life in general? Higher taxes on the rich could offer health care to all, and won't discriminate against those who haven't had the same opportunities in life
@sprybug7 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of brainwashed souls here in our country that don't even believe that. A lot have been brainwashed by right wing media to believe that the rich "earned" their money. Hell, my uncle thinks that too. In reality, the system here is rigged for the ones that already have the money to have all the breaks in life and for the system to work in their favor.

Luc Lamont-Caputo see, you possess compassion and regard. These late boomers, xers, and early millennial that are pulling the strings now, have never struggled. This generation sees FDR and his ideas as totalitarian. Total disregard for anyone not of their ilk. Fact is, there is always going to be present, folks that simply aren't afforded opportunity, enlightenment, and the means to acquire certain things . It's easier now more than ever to trivialize them and sweep them under the rug. They're despicable .
@AttackOfTheBees7 жыл бұрын
Being selfish and protecting your power and privilege is at least an understandable trait, we all do it to an extent, but the extreme greed that constantly comes from people who bleat on about how they're Christians? I'm not a fan of religion in general, but there's one thing that the Bible makes pretty clear: if you're a rich, selfish asshole, you're fucked if you think you're getting to Jesusland. You don't think people should have healthcare? Fine, do that, but don't pretend it's moral: it's warped, capitalist shitbaggery at its purest.
