I adopted my Greyhound years back. Largest breed of its kind. He was brindle and his name was Elvis. Long story short, best dog I EVER had. He was a gift from God. He actually lived past his expectancy. One day at age 13 running full out he broke his leg. His bones were frail from his age and he had to be put to sleep. I can't say how I spent the next few days crying like a baby. I miss you Elvis. 😥

I had a greyhound cross, Lenny, he was the most beautiful dog I've ever had, he was my best friend for so many years. When my stepfather had cancer Lenny would sit next to him and keep his eye on him. When I went through deep depression he knew and he saved me from taking my own life many times, he'd force his way into the house and not leave my side for days on end. He went to stay with my elderly grandparents while I was away working and became my grandmother's protector as well as my grandfather's companion on their horse stud. He's been gone for 7 years now and I'm crying my eyes out typing this because I miss him so much. I'm getting his picture tattooed on my ribs very soon. Did I mention that he never shut up? He talked all day every day, the most vocal and expressive dog I've ever seen.

i have to comment. they make it so difficult to adopt the greyhounds, now. i looked into it, having had a greyhound, years back. i think it may be actually easier to adopt a baby!!! you must have a fenced yard. you must have people write character references for you. they have to come and inspect your house.....etc.!!! when we adopted our greyhound i got the info about the agency from another greyhound owner. we sent in our app. they checked with our vet, to see what kind of pet owners we were. we went to a vet that worked with a local track. they vet checked, spayed or neutered, cleaned teeth, and updated shots and adopted them out. we took our dog with us to get our greyhound. they "kiity"tested the dog we picked and we paid her adoption fee and we were on our way!! our Tammy even still had her stiches from being spayed and promised to take her to our vet, in about a week, to have them removed. at the time, we drove a long way to get her but she was totally more than worth it!! now, they make it so difficult to adopt greyhounds, i'm sure that many a greyhound has missed out on a great, forever home because of this!!!! but, on the other hand, i can understand some of their precautions. but , i think it should be similar to adopting thru a humane society, not adopting a human.

@@georginahamilton4764 Where is your proof of this? Greyhounds aren't rescued from anything, they are retired. Yes they get fed raw beef, kibble, vegetables, vitamins and pasta or rice every day with treats in between. They have a good balanced diet. They don't run with broken ribs. That's just ridiculous to even say that. You try running with a broken rib. Greyhound injuries are very few.

My Italian GH did this any time the whole family wasnt together and with her. A person stands up and walks out of the room to the bathroom and she starts crying and then goes and herds them back so were together. Come bedtime which was early, like 10pm, she’d jump off the couch and go stand in front of the TV and cry and if we kept watching then she’d start yelling at us. Got only halfway thru hundreds of movies cuz we literally lived life around her schedule and everything she demanded. Was deeply in love with her for 17 years. Vacationed a hundred times, camping, hiking, beach, doggy summer camp four or five summers, dog park and ice cream parlor every other day and it was fine with me because being with her was all I ever wanted too. She just passed weeks ago and I still can’t sleep since I haven’t been alone in a bed since I got her. After being gung ho about rescuing not buying, I was sucked into a mall puppy store and I had a peek. One cage was empty and the price tag was crossed out over and over, 6000, 4800, 3200, 2000, 499, and finally 89$. I asked what was up with the empty cage and 89 dollar tag and they said she’s in back getting ready to be picked up. It had been six months and that’s when they get rid of the unsold dogs and they told me she’d go back to her puppy mill and be constantly pregnant in a cage for 6 or 7 years since that’s what they do with females who don’t sell and it’s a horrible fate. I said I’ll take her and I paid and as I took the receipt I asked, oh shoot what kind of dog did I just buy? They said an Italian greyhound which id never heard of but then they brought her to me and put her in my arms and I got teary eyed as she gave me my first hundred kisses. Love at first sight. And I can say for certain now that that 89 dollars and that miracle she lasted six months unwanted ended up being thee best thing that ever happened to me in life and I can’t imagine anything else in this world that could match the relationship and love I had for her. Inseparable till the end 😭❤️

@@GreyhoundHomecare My Grey, Mika (named after F1 champion Mika Hakkinen (fast name for a fast dog)), lived to the age of 15 before developing inoperable gastrointestinal issues. Mika was my first and only Grey, but was instrumental when helping me foster greys that had a difficult time transitioning out of track-life. He taught me many life lessons. It was amazing that two of my greatest learning moments came from him. 1) I can't change somebody, but I can show them another way. 2) Before getting mad at someone else's actions, first look at my own and find what I could've done differently that would have lead to a different result. He reminds me so much of my old rescue racer Timmy. They even look similar in size and coloring. Timmy had the same hesitations in his early walks, and would freeze like a mule. I also didn't even hear his bark for the first time until a few weeks after I got him, and he had relaxed enough to behave like a pet dog. When he'd get the zoomies, it was hilarious, because his legs were so long that he'd cover a room in about one and half strides before having to turn around. Other times, he would stand just a few feet away, stare into my eyes with a forlorn look, and start to whine until I called him over. Then he'd push his head into me and demand scratchies and attention. He'd really burrow in; I used to say "like a tick". He was such a sensitive, gentle soul.

David, I’m glad you said that, about not being able to cope with a dog free home. I hear people say, all the time after losing a dog, that they need some time. I’m just the opposite. Some people where I used to live had ex racing greyhounds they are lovely gentle dogs. Whe you start to stroke them they lean into you so much you nearly fall over. One woman had 2 of them they were gorgeous.
