Way way back in 09 I was building a speed freaks army. I needed a cheap troops option to hold backfield objective so I wanted grots. Then I thought, how do grots keep up with fast moving orks? No vehicles and legs too short to run. Then I had a thought. Who remembers those plastic Fischer Price quad skates designed to strap on over kids shoes? So I scratch built strap on quad skates for 10 grots using plasticard and green stuff. Then I couldn't have the grot herder walking, so I used some old model airplane wheels and plasticard to make a cross between a chariot and Segway scooter for him to ride. I love them, but I will never do all that again.

I have a few of these classic Gretchin, along with Orks of the same era. I've always liked the few Gretchin that have been available, especially the later ones, as well as the plastic Goblins for WHFB, because of how much character they have. That's why I've also been a bit bummed out that the Gretchin have not been available in larger boxed sets on sprues, or more visible in general. One of my dream projects is to make an all-Gretchin 40K army, where they compensate for their runtiness with insane tech.
@eBayMiniatureRescues9 ай бұрын
I also wish they were more front and center for orks, but 40k seems to be trying to simplify things and are getting rid of the more "fun" ork stuff. Still, making vehicles with lots of them all over the place is fun and there is potential for an all gretchin themed army.

Looks fun though I'd probably debate between a few audiobooks or just putting Blind Guardian albums on repeat to get something like this all done. One Ork trick I like is going with a different green contrast paint for a squad or nice medium green then try a different shade for some so there an easy bit of variety. What kind of tape did you use to secure them to the tray for the initial paint?? Been using a strip of wood & double sided foam tape which works but alternative brands is always good when one runs out.
@eBayMiniatureRescues9 ай бұрын
Good call with the contrast, that works really well. I just use painters tape wrapped backwards, it holds long enough to get the job done, and it can be quite a bit cheaper than the double sided stuff.

@Jathom9 ай бұрын
He used to do that, but he stopped. He talked about it on Paint Bravely, that he didn't want people feeling like they needed specific paint lines to accomplish the same goals. Though I do sometimes wish he'd share specifics again.
@eBayMiniatureRescues9 ай бұрын
Sometimes I do mention paints, when I find some quality about them that I really like, either color or consistency, or whatever, and when it applies to a specific use case. I mostly use Pro Acryl and the new Army Painter Fanatics. That's what I used to do all of the base coating for these guys, and even then, if I had picked Khorne Red from Citadel instead of the Dark Red from Pro Acryl, you might not even be able to see the difference. Whatever red you have on hand isn't necessarily the same red that I have, so even if I were to say here is the red I'm using, if all you had was some other red, it will still do the same thing in the end. It would be better for you to just go for it than to put it off until that new red came in the mail or you went and picked it up. That's really why I stopped mentioning it. At the end of the day you should be painting with whatever you have on hand and not buying another red that maybe looks different. Heck, most of these paint lines have conversion charts for citadel colors, which basically tells you that most of the colors out there are the same or very close anyway! I hope that helps, or at least makes sense lol.

What’s the name of that Totally Awesome stuff you use for stripping minis? I don’t know if it’s available in the UK. Does it need straining every so often to get all the loose bits of flaked off paint out or can you just leave it all in the jar? Like you said in the video, it does look cool as a piece in the hobby space, like a science lab.
@eBayMiniatureRescues9 ай бұрын
LA's Totally Awesome and unfortunately not available in the UK, or at least for the same price as we get it here in the US. It's $1 a bottle here, and widely available. I'm not sure what the exact equivalent is, but any kind of concentrated degreaser will do the job. Purple Power, Simple Green, things like that. I haven't had to strain it, but it depends on the models going in. I put some with lots of black paint and now the jar is almost pure black, so I will probably replace it when I go back to it next time. Otherwise if the paint doesn't cloud up the solution it settles on the bottom, so you could theoretically strain it if you needed to clean the liquid.

Do you have any suggestioins for breaking models up that are preglued?
@eBayMiniatureRescues9 ай бұрын
If they are superglued together then there is CA glue DE-Bonder that works amazingly well. If they were put together with plastic glue then you might be able to soak them in isopropyl or LA's totally awesome and loosen them up, but those pieces are more than likely permanent and will need to be cut off carefully. Isopropyl also works to soften CA glue after a long soak, and you can try putting them in the freezer overnight and getting that glue brittle to the point that the pieces just snap off at the joints. All in all, it's just kind of a pain and you need to try a few things before cutting into them, but it usually ends up working out with one of these methods.

I dont want my comment to seem critical, as this a painting channel and the painting tips are great. I would have painted according to how I would play them. 3 squads 23 each. 3 different paint schemes. May 3 20 unit squads and save the rest for gun crew or something. One 69 unit squad is too difficult to play. 3 smaller units cause more chaos. They can protect your important Orcs by holding opponent units for a round or two dealing with the little buggers.
@eBayMiniatureRescues9 ай бұрын
Yeah, that makes sense. I would probably run them in 20-man blocks anyway unless I was just messing around. But in terms of painting, I personally don't have any issues with colors not matching fully. That being said, I painted most of these in color blocks of 10 with another 10 being the same colors placed in an alternating pattern, so technically the 20-man squads are pretty close in color and in a lot of cases, the freehand on the guns match up. It's not 20 matching minis, but the colors are at least the same :)
@robinblackmoor87329 ай бұрын
@@eBayMiniatureRescues Nothing you did was wrong. It is more of a personal preference for me. Matching color schemes make game play easier for me. I don't play Orks often. Mostly I play Ultra Marines. I do like to play a mixed army of tanks, and mixed squads of humans too, so it is not a hard and fast rule for me. My Imperial Guard squads and tanks are all over the place. I have played a scenario before where a Ultra Marine squad is with Imperial Guard, and some artillery defending something against a friend's crazy mixed up Orks. He has Gorka Morka Orks and vehicles he uses in that army. It is supposed to be fun, so house rules make it more fun sometimes. Even played time travel scenario too. 40k and knights in same battle is a fun time.
