E-tron means 'Turd' in French. It's apt. Thank you for sharing your views and expertise. Like Sandy, I think you're right. But instead of managing my expectations, I feel it best to make a life change away from VWAG. The slide downhill at Audi has been continuous since the 2000's. Name a great innovation ['Vorsprung durch technic' since 2005, for example?] I've had many Audi's in my life and have always paid their high price [for a VW-like product] because of the great ergonomics, beautiful Bauhaus-inspired design styling and ok to good general build quality. If I look at my current A4 in detail, I am astounded at the lack of both good ergonomic design and honest build quality! The buttons fail early, don't work in terms of ergonomics and the car is clearly designed with Pre-determined product obsolescence in mind. "Everything will be worn out by 200kkm". My first TDI lasted 500kkm with no issues [1000km range on a 48l tank of diesel!] The next generation lasted 400 [1990's], the next gen lasted 350 [200's] and the next, 250. I take care of my cars, I pay a high price for them [chunks of my life] and have been loyal to Audi. My current Audi is KAPUT at 215kkm. Everything is worn out! Especially the mechanicals and electrical systems. MADE TO FAIL. Flimsy! ...... As an Electrical Engineer and Industrial designer, I have to admit that my professional opinion is that this sucks! I am no longer seeking and Audi as my next car, after 30years at the wheel of the 4 circles. I note their presence on the list of the 'You shall own nothing and be appy' club, with great sadness. Herr Hoch would be doing high RPM's in his grave, if he were to see the sorry state of the once wonderful marque that he created. Sandy you're quite right, of course. SAD, very sad

I think that last part is really important to understand. A 50k EV is equivalent to a 30k ICE car. You spend more money up front but you save those 20k over time (given average yearly mileage and average lifetime of cars) Auto makers make far less money off of EVs after sale because all that maintenance/service/repair/parts cash cow is basically gone. That is a HUGE part of their profitability calculation. If they want to remain in business then they have to charge more up front.

I remember in the 80s and 90s, many OEMs were criticized for having too many small buttons that were difficult to find by feel. The Q4 is an awesome car and the interior is great quality. I’ve ordered mine and was impressed the moment I sat in it and I come from a line of previous Audi’s. It’s a bit understated for the US market perhaps with its typical Audi design and lack of ugly chrome.

I’ve always been a fan of VW/Audi products of past because they always seemed to offer that “step up” in interior quality and material use over their competitors, with VWs often being referred to as “Audi light” for its premium interior feel. I don’t know if it’s because VW is still hurting from the substantial losses over Dieselgate that they’ve resorted to such drastic cost-cutting of their interiors across the line, but I sincerely hope they return to what made them so notable back in the day at some point. I currently have a MK7 Golf and got it largely because I needed a small urban runabout but didn’t want to feel like I was in this nasty plastic s***box. It had been my intent to upgrade down the road to the A3 for a similar purpose but for that added bump in interior quality. While I do love the new A3 exterior and interior and find it very contemporary, clean, yet handsome overall, the expanse of hard plastics used everywhere inside makes me think that should’ve been the interior of a redesigned Jetta.

Well, therefore they call Kia the new Audi. If you also had compared with the Tesla it comes close but the design and functionality are even better. Some important sticks and buttons left, many things intuitively redundant for every generation. Me driving for 54 years expensive ‚premium‘ would never thought to buy a Asian car, but as the best from Europe, e.g. Albert Biermann who was 30 years head of BMW M-Sport went there inspiring and motivating young engineers to cross borders, a saw that Hyunday group just in one generation became a real ‚premium‘ car brand with Genesis, Kia and Ioniq. Funny fact is about 800 Volts outstanding charging system that Hyundai worked closely together with Mate Rimac the Croatian Tesla. Only Porsche made that deal too, separated now legally from Volkswagen and bringing the crown jewel Bugatti as part of a special deal for ultra rich customers in to form Rimac-Bugatti. So Porsche has tight ties with Volkswagen Group with Audi, Seat and Skoda anyhow but seemingly do not really trust in them about their future anymore. Such deals behind the scenes show what the rich owner families have in mind. Buy in to the best possible partner. It is understandable when you look what Chinese companies are offering today. Look at the new BYD Supercar U8 and U9 than you quickly realize how outdated former German ‚premium‘ is actually and look at their communication telling customers how bright the future will be but the future already started seriously with Tesla. For me that is hard but their arrogance hindered innovation on all levels and they just wanted to do business as usual. Now they drastically loose market in China and even Russia, but also in Canada and USA. They are still strong in Europe but the decline started also over here!

Looked at the car in person in Ingolstadt. I think they have done a very good job of building a car that looks like a real Audi from the distance of a non-owner, but in detail it is more on the level of a Skoda Fabia. Quite an achievement as well! A tacit agreement thus develops between buyer and manufacturer not to talk about the cheap stuff. The trunk cover is actually there for EU regulation! EU cars have to have it, every single car here has one. I think it is indeed supposed to cover your goods from being seen and thus stolen. Also, some claim it does cause some fuel or in this case electricity savings as the space to heat is smaller. But yeah, it's cheap and easy to remove for a reason..

@@johnpublicprofile6261 Maybe I didn't explain well, but having things on top of the plate is not a good idea in terms of passenger safety. The Q4 is available in 2 body styles, SportBack and regular Wagon style. I have the sister model myself (Enyaq, not sold in the US) and chose the Wagon, as I occasionally need the space up to the roof in the boot. The Wagon version has a safety net with solid belts and a fastening device behind the 2nd row and behind the 1st row of seats if the back seat is down. Good thing there are options. The same wonder in the video where you think the seats are too simple, yes, but it is up to the person ordering the car to choose. On the q4, you can choose standard fabric, sports seats in fabric, comfort seats in fabric, or these variants in leather with the quality you want to pay for. Since I live in a cold climate and don't like sitting in leather seats, I chose seats (electric) with wool fabric. I wish Carl would have explained why you can’t/shouldn’t store anything on that “parcel shelf”. Lots of people keep hats and other light items there. Why can’t/shouldn’t you do that? Is it a weight issue? Blocking the rear window? Something else? Also, having privacy in your trunk for theft prevention is a very big deal in some cities. I don’t think Carl should have downplayed that.

Isofix completely covered in Polestar. "Luxury" spec is the performance, with, famously, "gold" seat belts!!! This is a very good review. It's going to help a lot of potential EV customers. I thought about a Q4 etron when buying the Polestar. Luckily, Audi had an 18 month waiting list (Germany) whereas Polestar said 4 (and managed it). Sometimes everything just falls into place by itself...

17:30 When I bought my Model Y it came with a parcel shelf in the back. At first look I thought it was less than functional but man was I wrong. It can be slid and folded into so many useful positions for so many different scenarios, and even completely out of the way against the back of the passenger seats. It's simple and extremely versatile, it's yet another favorite feature of the Model Y.

I know Sandy hates that this is a lazy rebadge of VW ID.4 so when Carl says "My favourite thing about this car is" omg, here it comes! He's gonna say something super mean! "the paint colour" There it is!! Haha! Nothing about the actual car is any good. The best this is the paint. It's better than the handling, the range, the charging speed, the price, the interior, the outer design, the headlights, the suspension, the brakes, the speed, the storage space, the seats, the dash and controls, none of that is up to par with something as simple as paint.

@Murno ; the clip in the interior at 13:20 is indeed a clip for wireless charging your phone while holding it in place (perhaps depends on the trim level). My Q4 40 drains my Android phone using Android Auto super quick; more than it can charge. Interior choices are indeed non-premium/Audi IMO. The hard plastics, flat logos and weird front grille would not my choice. Coming from ICE it really does drive super smooth, also on 20's alloys. Range gets to 200-250km while 500 was advertised. EV commercials sell 0-100% battery usage while in practice you charge to 80 and uncharge the battery to 20%. Coming from ICE, that was somewhat disappointing to me. In Netherlands that's just fine but might not be in US depending on infra.

I understand your comments about the child seats. I wanted to submit that 2 factors may be at play. I know in EUROPE their child seats have solid latches that click right in (which I wish we had in the US) So they probably didn't want to redesign that latching access area just for the US. Additionally, I know myself we sometimes have to move our seat from different family members and Babysitter...etc. It can be maddening how each car manufacturer does their child latching locations....ie misaligned or too deep! I sometimes wonder if they are trying to eliminate complaints in surveys or feedback regarding access to those. Imagine eliminating a few bad surveys due to this complaint. Just my thoughts on the matter, although I can agree with you on their jarring appearance on a grey leather seat.

You have no clue at all you will not even know which brands belong to the empire up to Lamborghini and Porsche and even Bentley and Bugatti. Ever heard about MAN SCANIA and all the commercial vehicles that belong to VW? No Nothing. There biggest market is China not the tiny USA. There they are the international market leaders and btw. they even came through the terrible early 90s when VW was much much smaller than today thanks to Piech who had cut the cost and started the quality programs back then. Passed away a few years ago , also a relative of the old Porsche, a grandson who had started his carreer at porsche in the racing and went to Audi before he became the VW CEO to save the company. Your days might be numbered but VW will stay for sure if you look at the figures carefully. Biggest manufacturer in China with a 1400 million population is a different story compared to the smaller US market.

It's a relic of when Tesla was going through its initial growing pains and actually delivering subpar quality, which is no longer the case today. Similarly, the shitty quality of these Audis and the like will be a relic of when legacy auto was scrambling to survive and trying to minimize the LOSS at which they sell each vehicle by cheaping out on materials cost instead of actually pursuing manufacturing efficiencies and innovation (i.e. today). Provided they survive long enough for it to become a relic, that is.

I recently ordered a Model Y and the interior quality is subpar as well. The vegan leather material is akin to a cheap gaming chair rather than actual leather. The MY rear seat cushion is quite shallow and flat. Also the MY is one of the only cars where I see videos of recent deliveries where there are blatantly exposed carpet seams and open pillar seams. Carl, do you not know how parents use child car seats?! Car seats are not a one or two year thing. Most parents buy a particular vehicle for their "car seat years" - which can go on for 8 to 15 years (depending how many children they have). Just one child can be in a car seat of some kind for 8 years. Children can be still using child booster seats at age 12 or so, depending on their size and weight. Obviously, Audi determined their car buyers will include parents.

21:40 I think it's dangerous to resign ourselves to the line of thinking that "oh well, I guess this is just what we should expect from a vehicle at this price point now given the economy/inflation..." This is how inflation becomes anticipated and therefore entrenched. It's our job as consumers (and, frankly, yours as an analyst) to be adversarial to corporations that are always trying to pull a fast one on us, to question whether something is good enough, to call them on their BS rather than make excuses for them. When we give an inch by resigning ourselves to 'luxury' becoming an 80k category rather than 60k as was the expectation _literally three years ago_ these companies will take a mile. Also, yes, batteries are expensive and you're paying a lot of the expected fuel and maintenance costs up front, but any competent automaker should be able to make back a lot of that extra cost through vastly simplified drivetrains and optimized thermal systems etc as we've consistently seen Tesla vaunted for in these teardowns/analyses, across price points, for several years now.
