Chimera is an ancient greek mythological creature that COMBINEs different animals, and in genetics it's used to describe organisms of COMBINEed distinct cells. Combine, bearded scientists, unlimited weapons and no-regen health, portals, Nr. 3 in title? Resistance 3 IS Half Life 3?

To be fair, the health, and weapon slots, and lack of cover, and crazy weapons are there because that's what Insomniac did with Ratchet and Clank. So perhaps Resistance 3 is a gritty clone of a slightly raunchy cartoon game that updated the anthropomorphic collect-a-thon genre by adding Halflife-esque shooter mechanics.

It's almost a game how many levels they can rip from HL2. You start off in the underground as it gets raided, go on a boat, go into the zombie town with preachers with bad accents, go into the mines, go on another vehicle section in which trains are important, go into a prison, release aliens into the prison by turning off critical pieces of hardware, then fight the alien city, then fight the alien tower...

In fairness to Resistance, Resistance 1 had multiple weapons, health packs, and no cover mechanics and that was right as the above mentioned features first started disappearing. So Resistance 2 comes and copies the industry standards, which hurt. So at least Sony had the right idea to reverse their changes in the 3 go at it.

Resistance 1 had health bars and "carry all weapons" feature, Resistance 2 had regenerating health (which is acutally kinda justified since the game established that chimera and humans with chimera powers have crazy healing powers like in a Call of Duty game) and only 2 weapons at a time, Resistance 3 follows 1's example but becomes more emotional

I have to say, I bought Half Life and the Orange Box a month ago in a steam sale... and I was rather underwhelmed. I was so underwhelmed, my playthrough of Half Life 2 is still stuck on the beach where enemies pop up if you walk on the sand. I think it's cause the internet has been treating Half ife 2 like the goddamn holy grail of games for the last decade (now), and my expectations for it were so unrealistically through the roof that I'd forgotten that the game was also one month away from being ten years old. There are few almost ten-years-old games that even come close to holding up after almost ten years (the first Halo, Jak and Daxter 1, other games I can't remember) and I feel like I can safely say that Half Life 2 didn't age as well as those. There are times when its funny or cool, like the scientist who has a defanged headcrab as a pet, that jumps on Gordon's old security-guard-co-worker's head and then later jumps into the teleporter Gordon is using and fucks everything up (side not: you'd need to have played the first ten minutes of Half Life and interacted with the first security guard you meet a few times for the guy who gets jumped by a headcrab in the sequel to feel significant at all); or the time I was escaping a helicopter on a motorboat and pulled this awesome slide-up-the-wall-of-a-drainage-ditch move. Also, the priest in Ravenholme was pretty awesome, once I realized he wasn't going to try and kill me. The facial animation, for being a decade old, was also admittedly outstanding. Oh, and you get to play catch with a giant robot. But for every awesome or funny thing I experienced, there were just as many things that grated on me. For one, mandatory first-person platforming and walking across tiny rails over death-falls. There's a reason those things haven't been seen in FPS games in the last eight years, and that's because those things suck. There was this one part where I had to crawl beneath and jump across the broken frame of a bridge so I could turn off the force field that was blocking my car. Then, once I turned off the force-field and fought off the living gunship with my lazer guided rockets that I had to guide around it's goddam invisible force-shield, I had to jump and slow-walk BACK across the underside of the bridge. That bridge can go fuck itself and die and burn in an everlasting hell. Driving said car was also rather clunky and unresponsive, and I often kept accidentally driving into spaces I could not back the car out of (there was also this one part along the car drive to get to the bridge where I had to look for three batteries to power a gate; the first was already in, the second was laying nearby, and I furiously searched around for half an hour and ended just blasting things with the gravity gun in a desperate attempt to extract some amusement from the game (the gravity gun really isn't as awesome as it's been made out to be either, because it's only useful at killing enemies if there are explosive barrels or sawblades readily on-hand (pro tip: they rarely ever are) when I accidentally shot a upturned bathtub and saw that the last battery had been hidden beneath. I then swore angrily under my breath for a full two minutes) and every section with a vehicle that I played seemed to drag on far longer than it should have. That bit with the motorboat felt like it should have ended by the time an alien fused a machine gun to the side, and then it dragged on for what felt like another hour, when it had already been going for quite a while already. By the time I was forced to get out of my car, I didn't want to have to drive the thing ever again, I'd been in it for so long. There was also this bit with the car where I had to use the speed boost to dodge an oncoming train, that spawns and moves giving you barely enough time to react even when you know its coming, and it doesn't help that it's hard as dicks to tell if you've even turned the speed boost on. And there's that bit I stopped at, the bit where the game basically turns into "the floor is lava" except this lava summons giant bug-crabs that waste precious ammo. To be honest, even playing catch with the giant robot feels like it lasts longer than it should. I'm sure Half Life 2 was awesome when it came out, and we were still accepting of First-person platforming coming standard, along with cryptic puzzles and direction (the giant enemy car powering a force-field comes to mind, as does the courtyard in Ravenholme (there's this one point with a spinning blade trap that I'm almost absolutely certain I got past in the wrong way (I just wedged in a crate and hurriedly rushed through before the crate got knocked out of position)) and so wowed by the physics and novelty of being able to shoot boxes at enemies with wild abandon that we forgot that shooting them with boxes doesn't hurt them in any way. A truly good gun based on gravity manipulation wouldn't need something that is already fairly lethal to be a useful weapon; you should be able to pick up anything and blast it with enough force that it kills the first thing it hits. When you can pick up and blast things away with a gun that has no power meter and can be used ad infinitum, don't relegate said gun to what is basically the status of Puzzle-Solving/First-Person-Platforming-Enabling-Device (PSFPPED). Man. I think I channeled some Alternate-Reality-Yahtzee for a few minutes there. Flame shields up.

Honestly, I read your whole comment, and IMO I think you totally missed the point of the game. I think you were looking for something like HALO, where you're blasting baddies, all the vehicles drive like a Lexus, and the enemies are unvaried and totally predictable. Not to slight HALO, but from what I garnered from your opinion, you'd rather play a rail-shooter. Sorry it didn't impress you
@1337ijs

I'm not saying I didn't like it. The first couple gunfights were cool, and managed to maintain interest as they kept dropping in new guns to expand my options. And, there was that bit I mentioned with the motorboat-dam-slide that made me smile to myself at how cool it was to do. Like I said, I think this was a case of infeasible expectations; I was expecting the greatest game mankind had ever created, and nothing can possibly meet those expectations. Admittedly, I haven't played much of it since I stopped. For all I know, it gets better past the sand bit. I also think I myself was part of the problem; Half Life 2 requires a way of thinking in FPS games that the last decade of games has slowly bled out of me. I'm not talking about health and shields being non-rechargeable, or being able to carry tons of guns. I'm referring to the platforming and puzzles and fairly open-ended-ness of the whole thing. The most open-ended modern FPS moment I can remember playing that even comes close to HL2 levels was that one bit near the middle/end of Bioshock where you have to collect bomb/Big Daddy parts. And the only modern cases of FPP I can think of are Mirror's Edge and Dishonored, and Dishonored barely counts because you can teleport almost everywhere. And, like I said, I'm fairly certain I might have been channeling the Bizarro-Yahtzee when I wrote that; a man who derides Half Life 2 and likes cover-based shooting and regenerating health. Hence the title of Bizarro-Yahtzee.

ISchulz I get what you are saying and I went through the same experience as you. I played it with all of the hype and expectations and was slightly disappointed. But it's a difficult game to get into, what really grabbed me is the subtleties. Like the Gman. I was playing the airboat section and noticed him watching me and when I got closer he walked away. It was shocking and weird and made me look everywhere for him, and all of a sudden, he was everywhere. Always watching you. That's when the game really grabbed me and I couldn't stop playing because I wanted to find out what was going on, and once that happened I found myself enjoying the game so much that once I finished it I immediately wanted to play it again. Oh and if you are wondering if it gets better. YESSSSSSS. Sandtraps, the chapter you are currently on is the worst chapter in the game and one I have to slog through every time I play the game. But the best of the game is coming, once you get past that chapter you get to lead an assault on Nova Prospect and after that the uprising in City 17. It's a brilliant game it's just kind of weak from a narrative perspective and that makes it seem kind of overrated. But just keep playing the game and pay attention to the background details and then will you find the true strength of Half Life 2.

I actually also got Half Life 1 in the same Steam sale. Couldn't finish it either. It was around the point where I had to cross a bridge with a gun emplacement on the other side, and then go through a lake full of monster alien fish (monster-filled swimming in FPS's is also something that has slowly disappeared over the years, I've noticed) and I decided to stop there because I realized I simply wasn't having much fun. I know that if I'd played Half Life 1 when it first came out, my mind would have been been blown to somewhere near Jupiter, because considering the time it came out (I was big on Star Trek Elite Force around a year or so at the time of Half Life which was very similar in style and mechanics (though it had cutscenes and no monster-lakes)). I'm not saying that Half Life 1 and 2 weren't incredible examples of gaming in their own times, and are fun in their own rights as examples of good times long gone by; the times of limited health and first-person platforming and swimming and giant fish monsters coming standard in large bodies of water. Well Yahtzee, to answer your question: Insomniac put non-generation health, 10 weapon slots, non-cover based shooter features in Resistance because it just fun! Insomniac has a rich tradition of including these kind of features to every game they made (all Resistance games and the Radget & Clank series for example). If you ask me you can say that Insomniac are the "Valve" on their Playstation-only terrain.

Aye, but it didn't start before the books (One year earlier in Russia). Regardless though, he's just poking fun, not being serious. Post apocalyptic games and stories tend to share aspects--that would be like saying every medieval fantasy story rips off Lord of the Rings and/or Dungeons and Dragons; technically true, but criminally unfair.

Well if they copied what some others games do, at least they copied bits from what are generally felt to be good games. And I have to say, playing Metro feels like cheating on Half-Life. I'm lost in a bleak love triangle somewhere between the Russian Metro and City 17. Oh dear. That said, finally got around to Resistance 3, really is a good game that leaves you feeling like playing it again.

Regardless of the points made, I still enjoyed the Resistance games far more than the Half Lifes. Because that's exactly how they felt: Half arsed!! Valve has only ever impressed me with Portal and Portal 2. Albeit a touch generic in choice, but it felt more beloved and cared for throughout development thus resulting in a superior end product.

Valve is smart enough not to release the third sequel to any game they make. At this point, a game like Half Life 3 could be nothing but bad. Too much nostalgia and too much time makes it inevitable. I hope it is never released. There has never been a game series in history that had a third game nearly as good as the first two (not counting those that change almost everything at a fundamental level like Fallout 3 - that was arguable as to whether it was better than the predecessors or not - I'd say no - but so different so as to not even be the same sort of game any more).

It would beat what Half Life 3 would probably wind up being; a military-ish cover based shooter with regenerating health and a heavy focus on multiplayer at the cost of single player. Also, they would probably fully explain GMan and fucking ruin him.
@halfhalo33
@halfhalo33 11 жыл бұрын
Cajaquarius I doubt, the last AAA fps game they made (I believe L4D 2) had health kits/no regen health, not a military cover base shooter, and a heavy focus on co-op. CS:GO (budget title), while a MP and military shooterish, had no regen health, no ironsights, no cover based glue yourself to the wall shit.

Believe it or not, Resistance 3 is considered to be the WORST resistance title among fans. Sure resistance 1 hasn't aged perfectly, but resistance 2 seems to suffer the exact opposite of middle -child syndrome. It still holds a relatively active community, even today (Though not to the extent of games like TF2 and counter strike). I recommend that you go go back and try it if you ever find yourself sitting around on you're just ass getting tired of making golden cocks 'n balls in Minecraft.

Am I the only one who thinks the the 2nd is the worst? I didn't like it as it was so blatantly trying to fit in with other modern shooters like CoD, and had the same boring mechanics. The weapon wheel and health meter from the 1st and 3rd were much better, and being able to play the campaign in co-op. Although I have got to admit that 100 people death-matches were quite interesting.

leaving aside the uhh taking inspiration/ ripping off let's look at the game by it's own merits joe speaking during cutscenes but not gameplay means we can build up the guys personality without it getting in the way of all the shooting which i thought was a nice touch plus it means you gotta be really motivated to make the guy seem more likable than the alien monsters we're killing you have a point about the stakes still an army of monsters making scary noises is enough reason for me to consider them a threat but i get scared by a barking dog
