I was trying to describe the plot of this game to a friend, and the first words out of his mouth were "Ah, so it's like Fallout." My shoulders slumped and I muttered, "Yes."

+the Sententious Vaunter It has some similarities in the story department, but gameplay, not so much. Frankly, Fallout had the open world, the freedom to basically say "Screw the plot, I'm exploring." and had a lot of freeform ways to improve your character. Rage felt, to use a term i really dislike, videogame-y. It had levels. Strict progression of your character through story moments. Go here, do this. Ok, now do this. So yeah. Fallout, but shit

I would've said "It's like Fallout, if they watered its identity down to the point that it just became Mad Max again but without the original herbs and spices." If I was an off day I would have said "Like Fallout, but without the rich writing, varied and interesting characters, complex role playing system, deep world building and sharp, cynical satire" but then I would realize I just described Bethesda's Fallout games and would have felt bad because even if Bethesda's fallout games do lack those things, at least they have the exploration I guess.
@ultimateninjaboi
@ultimateninjaboi 7 жыл бұрын
I'd say you described Fallout 4, more than all the 3D ones. XP. 3 and New Vegas had a little bit of those things going for them. 3 had some great writing moments and decent world building, and I found myself falling for some of the characters in NV. And there's some good role playing opportunity in NV. But yeah. Still some lacking from the originals. This is less me arguing your point, and more me dissuading people from ignoring 3 and NV. XP. I guess I'm just playing Devil's Advocate for them, because I still found them worth playing.

this is yet another prime example of how Yahtzee's pessimistic predictions more often than not is true. Rage was a sign of things to come, alright. Games being more and more pretty and less and less filled with actual content that's not just a bucket list of inane shit to do, seems like the AAA standard, now.

@@azzzanadra Is it wrong to expect them to make some sequels to their old stuff in their new engine? Might as well make a TF3 so the devs trying to de-bug TF2 don't commit suicide looking at that source-code. But tbh it isn't a bad niche for them to pick-up. Half-Life always represented innovation in the industry right? Without VR how do you revolutionize gaming (while stuck in the FPS genre) without some type of new tech to work with? Yeah, this game has rock solid shooting mechanics, every weapon feels powerful and satisfying to use with amazing sound effects and the seemingly infinite amount of enemy reactions. However it is very repetitive, the levels are largely unimaginative and cripplingly linear, and it doesn't feel like there's a lot of progression. I don't care about the game's story being bad since that's not what I play these games for, but the actual game itself only really has its shooting as a strong point - Everything else is mediocre, except the visuals and sound work.

The problem with Rage is something Yahtzee mentioned in his "Let's Drown out Quake II." Id Software is more of an engine company. Great gameplay engines, so-so game to go with it. Rage does have amazing graphics that constantly hum at 60fps and reactive enemy A.I. that's frankly the best I've seen in any shooter, and great gunplay to boot. The problem is that it feels like they spent more time on the engines and less on the actual game, which sucks. I don't feel very motivated when playing this. I feel like a perfectly good game engine is being left to waste on a lackluster story. People are so fond of making mods with other engines, why the hell not this?!

And all I get is a few seconds of meaningless cut-scene?" You're not even given any time to give a shit about any of the characters, or for those characters to develop, it's all just "I"m a badass now go do what I tell you, oh you're done, okay go to the next town, we're done now that I've given you that single mission."

He didn't even mention the outrageous incongruity with the game's plot. You and your rebel buddies try to dismantle The Authority's regime, yet the only time The Authority ever directly antagonizes you is in direct retaliation to you antagonizing them. There's even that one bit where they, in a rather uncharacteristic fashion, broadcast a polite and non-threatening message across the first hub town, asking residents to report any suspicious individuals they might come across -- again, in a completely polite and non-threatening tone. That alone would make anyone pause and wonder who they hell they're even fighting against. In fact, the only time they ever directly "oppress" anyone is during the second half of the game where they seize control of the second hub town and lock up its corrupt mayor, conveniently just after he sent you on an errand to supply the town with illegal power. The soldiers don't even antagonize or threaten you, merely telling you to go on about your business. This would be like watching Star Wars Episode 4 from the Empire's perspective and the movie expecting us to treat them as the protagonists even after they blew up Alderaan -- it doesn't work!

You know I really liked this game. It took a bit to get ramped up and start explaining things and then started showing some cool characters and giving you some plot but then during a normal mission after killing some mutants and throwing a switch. It ended. I actually sat there waiting for the next objective to pop up until I realized that the game was over and that normal "kill stuff in enemy base: mission was the FINAL mission. Then i didn't like the game. Imagine if fallout 3 ended the second you got to megaton and you'd have what this game does. It gradually starts showing you an interesting and exciting world with a mysterious backstory and some amazing settings and then just as you think the game is about to become amazing and will wow you, it ends.

Mad Max crossed with Fallout and Borderlands. Good fun, but I thought it was a little claustrophobic. The open spaces for vehicle combat were really tight and the paths to the different towns seemed incredibly short. And like Yahtzee said, only two hub towns (neither of which were very big). I'd love a Rage sequel with more to it.

I sort of get it, like as soon as the generic disaster hits people will still wear regular clothes, but as they run out and the materials to make them run out, people make their own. Plus there's the whole 'kill or be killed' philosophy, so they want to intimidate people by attaching the things they've killed onto themselves (hence the skulls) and making themselves more aggressive (hence the spikes, etc.) Plus, if generic disaster happened, your loved ones would most likely die, and society would crumble causing madness, so there's that to factor in

'Wolfenstein 3D' brought us a new era of 3D shooters. 'Doom' brought us incredibly fun shooters that everybody basically loved. 'Quake' brought us 3D texture-mapped polygonal worlds, enemies and guns, where sprites had once sufficed. 'Rage' should've pushed the envelope, but unfortunately, in the past the technological advances were coupled with fun gameplay, 'cause it was nothing we'd really seen before. The gameplay in 'Rage' was enjoyable, if a little repetitive, but the story is what let the title down. They are world-class engine programmers, but Yahtzee is right when he says they can't engage, because the story is poorly written.

The reason the game requires so much storage is the same reason Doom 2016 is massive in file size, itself. id uses Megatextures, basically every surface has its own texture rather than being repeated from one image. It's one supremely massive image that streams in all of the game's data. Unfortunately, it's also absurdly huge. In Doom 2016's case, tens of gigabytes huge.

We already used to say that more than ten years ago. It's hardly prophetic to repeat this rhetoric nowadays. I think since the once 'next-gen' graphics became reality (~XBox 360 times), it became easier and easier to get lost in between all the fancy graphics advancements, which were supposed to make the gaming experience more immersive, not replace it.

This is what I mostly say about games this days, If your game looks polished and pretty with high graphics where you can see every mans bloody wrinkles its pretty pointless if the game does not have art-style or at least some charm Take Naruto Shuppuden UNS3 for example, it looks pretty, it has waterfalls and treets, and some fancy areas and its a good game I'm getting the felling that they are only pushing high graphics is so they can force us to buy new hardware and waste MORE money rather then make a half way decent game 60$, Game that lasts 4h, looks pretty but gliches like bloody hell every few minutes Or 15$ get hours of playtime, pretty artwork and design, runs smooth and rewarding ((AKA Dusk: An Elysian Tail )) Quite Ironic the one good game with fair price we see is made by a single person in 4y who programed and did artwork alone

Lewtable Games are losing more and more content because we think it's okay for them to do so and accept it. If you people actually did something instead of complaining (stop buying their games) maybe we'd see some change. If as little as 10k people chose not to buy a new release of Battlefield 4, for instance, we'd see a drastic change and a much more polished game than the disaster that was upon release. Not that I experienced it myself, I've lost trust for EA long ago and don't dare even think about pre-ordering any of their games. Also a lot of the time game developers are huge gamers themselves. If not they're inspired by other artwork or art that motivates them to make a game of equal caliber/feel. Saying that "corporations have teams with different ideas, different opinions and need to catter it to appeal the largest audience" is bullshit when you have modern AAA games like Metro or Alan Wake on the market. Some of the best (while lower budget) games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. were inspired by different forms of art. Stalker was inspired by the movie, stalker and holds up well for so. While sadly the most successful games are just milked from the same formula, it's not the developer's fault, but rather the publisher and consumers who buy the same shit year after year. As long as this goes on we won't see any change

1r0zz What you seem to not get here, is that this game has MANY similarities to Fallout 3 besides the post-apocolyptic setting. First off, you are locked underground to save yourself from said cataclysm. Secondly, the many lawless raiders and baddies of the new dusty world have strapped silly gasmask and cow-skull pieces to their body like it's supposed to be some sort of armor to save them from someone with OCD. Thirdly, all the denizens of post-apocalyptia that don't want to rape your skull with bullets refer to any and all land outside shanty city-walls made out of tin sheets as "The Wasteland". Finally, you must join up with the local rag-tag resistance group to fight off the (for a lack of a better word) authoritative super-armored bad guys who want to conquer "The Wasteland" and have their oppressive dictatorship in it's place (see Enclave from FO3). Slap the Borderlands art style and shittly controlled vehicles in there and you've got Rage. Don't be in denial, the comparisons of Rage and Fallout are impossible to avoid.

Headbob and FoV was my biggest beef with this game. Made me absolutely nauseous, and there's no way to turn it off in the menus. You have to go into the launch parametres and turn headbob off yourself, and to alter FoV you have to add to your current, which was about 65 degrees of sight; absolutely awful. Volumetric lighting in it was awful, graphics not overly impressive, gameplay okay, story absolutely awful. I feel like I was herded around like a fucking sheep, "YOU do this, YOU do that".
