Hey Nicko... Very nice and cut to the chase video. I have also just disassembled my AirMINI because I have this situation: I have been using Airsense10 for the last few years and I used to travel a lot for business. By mid 2018 I bought the AirMini just not to carry the AS10 which is bulky. AirMini was convenient, expensive, but it is also adaptative pressure (which works wonders). I carried it in my backpack, but with Covid my traveling started being limited (I think I only flew once or twice in 2020)... and most of my few trips since 2021 have been short A couple months ago, while abroad, my AirMini stopped working in the middle of my sleep... at first this was for a few minutes and it would work back when unplugged. That happened for 2 nights in a row until I considered it was "broken". Unfortunately and by policy. there's nothing to fix. After 2 years the guarantee expires and you are forced to buy a new machine (1200 usd). ResMed doesn't sell spare parts or doesn't repair AirMinis. I try to explain to the ResMed reseller that I really haven't used it much (about 980 hrs in the 3.5 yrs span) and Resmed says the average life of AirMini should be about 18,000 hrs. So, If I buy a new one and this happens again I only have 2 yrs to expect for the machine to break so it could be exchanged. Other wise, it would be like a disposable thing every 2 years. This is preposterous, but they don't let you talk to them (Resmed) directly. So, other than paying a lot, now u can't be sure that u are getting a top quality machine... It has been really frustrating and I wish there are more AirMINI users reading this, so we can actually reach to ResMed directly.

One time mine didnt work any more, and was the power supply, I call the reseller and fortunately have one. So I buy it for about 40 usd and now is eorking again. Is just to check if the green light of the power supply is on…Also they recommend me to use a better A/C adapter

Hello , thank you for the video very instructive. wonder if there is a coin battery inside this unit ( keep the cmos alive ) ? in the past i own the Breas Z2 , and 4 years after purchased , the unit was dead , The reason was that the coin battery inside the unit was dead , so it lost the program in the cmos . Breas told me to buy a new one . thats the purpose of my question . Thank you !

Holy crap Nicko…that blew my mind, between the cost of the turbine and that the turbine in the AS11 is the same as the AM. Although I love ResMed machines I suppose someone has to pay for their misdeeds with the Australian tax authority and FTC fines levied upon them in the US. That type of crap really pisses me off. Hi Kath, yeah it's pretty crazy hey! I guess i always knew that we were never really paying for the components or the 'technology'. Just paying for their legal fees and intellectual property. Costs a lot of money to maintain a monopoly especially when the barriers to entry should be relatively low for competition. Anyway, i just find it interesting they are releasing a new machine that has a 4 year old turbine in it. Also shows how much a difference the foam makes! (AS11 vs AirMini). Cheers mate. Nicko

G’day great vid, travelling last week & my Air Mini quit in the early hours- the unit was quite hot. A quick google told me blocked filter or tubing but after checking none of that. It also suggests a PC board failure. The machine is 3 years old but has run a max of 2 months. If I take it to a CPAP shop I know they are going to hurt me bad (lol) any suggestions would be great- thanks in advance

The heart of the unit is the turbine and if the previous units turbine performed well these cartel gangsters wouldn't want to give us an improved longer lasting turbine. They simply add a few bells and whistles to potentially excite us and they hope we assume we are getting a fully new engineered piece of equipment to justify the new huge cost 😂. Awesome observation and great discovery mate and as to the turbine cost and it's manufacturer preventing general retail sale to customers it just goes to show these corporations are one big club and we aren't in it. 😎

Granted. But it's not just the cost of a turbine. It's the time and expense to design and test it, the algorithms, FDA / TGA / Gov't approvals and all the other aspects of manufacturing and supporting a medical device. On the flip side is the right to repair. If you want to void your warranty and purchase and install your own turbine - well that should be allowed. Of course, some would argue this is a medical device and not a iPhone screen and consumers should not be repairing medical devices.

I fully understand design and test expense but as an aircraft mechanic we aren't talking a GE90 or Trent 1000 here it's a hamsters fan 😂. Not so sure about extensive test requirements otherwise Philips wouldn't be in their debacle and I'm sure ResMed, Philips and the rest have the same Government rules to follow.

@Capt-Intrepid i don't think they design it! It looks like an off the shelf product to me from the suppliers website. They also have hundreds of other similar offerings. The other costs you mention are really one off's that are pretty small really. The main costs would be associated with legal fees & intellectual property costs, distribution, advertising etc. I know there's many many costs on top of the actual components but it's hard to stomach a $900 motor replacement when you find out the component is $20. Phillips recalled (and is recalling) many of their CPAP machines due to their PE-PUR sound abatement foam tearing off and being inhaled by the equipment user, causing a host of health issues, including some fatal. I would imagine that it would be best to have a noisier unit without foam and "risk", than one with foam that could possibly be inhaled and toxic. ??

Based on your cost discovery of the blower unit, it seems ResMed is marking up the prices of their CPAP devices quite a bit, like an EpiPen. That isn't right.

Actually a 20 dollar cost for the motor isn't that surprising to me. The circuit board is probably considerably more than that. Then there's the connectors, wiring, ac adapter, screen, humidifier, etc. I'd be pretty surprised if the totsl landed cost of the device isn't around 200-300 dollars. And they have R&D costs involved, manufacturing overhead, capital investments, marketing, etc. Then they sell it wholesale which is probably half the price right there. Blame the DME for the markup being obscene. They could sell at a profit for 600 dollars but they charge 1000+

G'Day Nick, I was diagnosed with SA in 2014. I had to go into hospital with a lung infection and it was discovered there that I may have a problem. So after they fixed the infection there, I was sent to a sleep clinic in a hospital closer to home for the sleep test. They had already given me a mask at the original hospital, and after I had the sleep test, the woman who was organising the new CPAP machine came in with it and a new type mask. I said I won't need a mask as I already had one. She insisted I take the new one, so I asked what it cost. $300! I nearly fell off the bloody bed! No, I said I would use the mask I had and she went crazy, really got in a temper and I wondered why. Of course, the penny dropped, she was getting a cut out of the sale of the mask! I didn't own a computer at the time, but when I got one, that was about the time I was due for a new mask. So I eventually tracked the same one down at a major chemist in Sydney for $160. It is a Resmed Quattro FX by the way, and it's a great little mask for my purpose. But I think they have been discontinued now, so I managed just lately to eventually find a 'last in stock' one thankfully. That's when I started looking at the whole sleep apnea 'industry', and ripoffs are aplenty as you know Nick. The more people like you can get the word out, the better. As I have a bit of experience with electronics, I can tell you that those electric motors would cost about $5 if that to make and the electronic components etc. between say $50-$100 depending on whether the integrated circuits are proprietary or off the shelf types. I still haven't heard from Philips yet about the recall. I have an older machine, a System One which I think is a BiPAP? Not sure. But as I am on a pension, I get the machine through a rental agency and they sent a letter in July saying Philips would start contacting us in August and September. Heard nothing yet. I haven't even bothered to check the Philips website for a good while because I know they would have a huge backlog. I'm about to send an email to find out what's happening. This has nothing to do with the sleep apnea industry, so edit this bit out if you like Nick. If anyone needs any new sensors for their car, check around the web for different models or brands that use the same sensor. Examples-a throttle position sensor-$150 from a major auto chain compared to $30 from an online repair centre. Made by Hitachi with the exact same part numbers etc. One more- an MAP sensor, same brand etc. $70 or $30, which would you pay? Ripoffs everywhere Nick, thank goodness we have the web to sort things out. They must think we are stupid. Thanks for the Channel Nick. Sorry for the long comment.

I own an AirSense 10 for daily use, but I bought my AirMINI by mid 2018 and with covid lockdowns and business travel patterns all changed, I really haven't used it much (information shows about 900 hrs of total usage) and Resmed documented life span indicates in average 12,000 hrs or more. Problem is my AirMini doesn't turn on anymore and the guarantee expired after 2 yrs of the date of purchase, which is a non sense... ResMed won't repair or sell spare parts for AirMini. They told me to buy a new one, which SUCKS.

Yes and No to them gouging, having spent the last 25yrs working in Med-Tech, one has to look at the big picture, Resmed has to borrow money for R&D, to develop new products, along with paying for all the cube sitters, i.e. Engineers, paper shufflers, Lawyers, IT People, Sales Reps, the Top Management, the Board of Directors, plus for heating and cooling the buildings, the manufacturing of the product, stocking the parts, servers and computers, lots of costs, then you get into all the different governments (FDA here in the US, GTA in Australia) who have to approve it before they can sell it, the forms that have to be filled out, all the hoops these Med-Tech companies have to jump through, to get it into other countries, Plus the lawsuits. Governments, consumers, other med-tech companies, (they all sue each other for patten infringment) on top of all that, the amount of time waste, different depts don't or won't talk to each other until they have to and it's like two kids in the sandbox who won't play nice. On top of that, ask Uncle Nick what his company pays for one, and what he sells it for? This is why an Implantable Pacemaker or Defibulator costs the insurance company $30-40k.

My AS11 does not have a heated tube, and I don't think the heat plate heats. When is the heating plate used or what is it important for?

I paid $1300 for my mini 2 months ago, June '24. The 10 cost me $2400 at the same time. We travel a lot and i didn't want to have to source distilled water, hence the purchase of the mini. I actually like it better than the 10. I like the information straight to my phone and the blue tooth set up also. Both machines have been around for years and i was disappointed at the price tags for old technology. It seems however that they haven't progressed any, if the 11 uses the same component as the mini. Perhaps 'perfect' can't be improved.

I am looking for OEM filters and they don't seem to be available (I didn't have this issue with Respironics' DreamStation). Hey Nick, boy I needed a Scotch after that VIDEO - its kind of like Resmed executive's must drink that fancy Japanese Whiskey for $ 400.00 a bottle. I'm very anxious for your Resmed 11 review. I'm currently having mask problems and will have to go back and try a full face mask as I have started mouth breathing again Just that problem is fun but my respiratory supplier is great to work with - its the channels of primary care doctor and insurance. In the interim I'm going to try and get my pressure increased about three pounds because I think the foam nasal mask is constricting the air flow - I'm not getting that great dog air I love. Next I am due for a new machine which is almost like a NASA project. It will take about two months for the paper work to go through because they want to go back and find my original sleep study charts which are probably buried in the pyramids But if successful it will be an 11 series. I'm hoping the doctor won't require sleep study - we both know those are useless as teats on a boar hog. Besides I can get a print out anytime I need to from my service and last one shows leakage but very minimal events. That's why I love your dedication to this CPAP game. It gives us so much knowledge on what these crazy wombats are doing. Way back when I was trying to work out the right mask I found some old ones I was using and they turned out to be Phillips - is that not a hoot ? My partner's Amy Sue 10 Auto (as we call her too) is getting close to getting that warning about its motor life has been exceeded! We don't want to pay the $900 to repair it, could we potentially find the pump/motor online and just replace it ourselves?? It out of warranty now anyways, what would you recommend? I'm quite handy building things, repairing and sometimes destroying them lol. So we have nothing to lose I guess right? He got the new Airsense Mini because he travels (travelled, prior to these lockdown). And if I kill it then we can just get a new one with Health Fund paying for part of a new one. What would you do? I saw you found that the motor for the AS 11 and the Mini are the exact same online for $20US!!!! That's insane. Have you ever found the motor for these AS 10 Autos?? Cheers for any advice at all 😀😀

I have actually sourced the AirSense10 blowers and they ended up costing me $90 USD a piece however the pricing is very expensive at the moment as their is such incredible demand for the products. Once you receive the 'motor life exceeded' message, just keep using the same machine. You don't need to change the motor. It should still work just fine. Hello Nick! I am a retired engineer using a resmed aircurve 10 bipap. I don't have your tool kit for disassembly but I'd bet the Curve has the same motor/turbine pump, maybe even the controller board/chipset... the driving algorithm has an additional leg for exhale portion! probably the same as the inhale portion with tweaking provisions for lower pressures.. Manufacturing always has the excuse for greed. I want a bipap Mini. This isn't rocket science... I've done that, do I have to do this too? Can you help me with that? Thanks for you insight, I'll bet you were hell with an erector set...

I'm not surprised at the pump price. Some time ago my son's expensive D&G digital watch failed. I took it apart and looked for a replacement movement. It is a standard movement (made in Japan) used by many watch manufacturers. It cost £3.15. On a £150 watch!

Great video! I just got an air mini because I’ll be travelling more in the future and the compact nature of the unit is perfect. But the proprietary nature of the hose connection is an absolute RIP OFF! The elbow is a noisy piece of garbage! If the motor inside is the same as the motor in the larger units why couldn’t they just make it so you can connect a regular, non heated hose and be on your way? This is actually counter intuitive on the part of Resmed, if they made it a universal hose fitting, perhaps they’d sell more units? Now I have to find an after market fitting to use a normal hose with it.

Hi Connie, i think you made some really great point here. I would say that most of the people who own an AirMini probably own a full size ResMed unit as well. They will want to keep it that way (basically double dipping the pap community). Cheers

If you have insurance, insurance will cover the full size machines (depending on the situation), but NEVER the compact AirMINI. Size is terribly convenient, but mine has broken without a reason and the guarantee policy is absurd...

Nicko Dundai - I LOVE that the AirMini has NO FOAM! Since I am still waiting for ResMed AirSense machines to be in stock, I called the DME company to see if I could get an AirMini by paying out of pocket with my HSA instead. They told me the AirMini isn't designed for everyday use because it doesn't have humidification. I told them it has waterless humidification. They said, well that's just a sponge, and it's not meant for everyday use. Is that even true? Or is there some other reason they don't want people buying AirMini machines and calling it a day? [insert conspiracy theory of choice here] I plan on contacting my doctor to ask about what they said because he told me that technically, if I didn't want to use humidification on a machine, I don't have to, it's not like its required. My sleep apnea is mild on my side, worse on my back, and so my doctor said an Auto set is best, which the AirMini has. I just don't understand why a travel machine cannot be used everyday. Isn't it basically the same thing, but smaller? Thoughts?

Hello diana my name is richard from nsw i also suffer a sleep apnea since 1984 anyway i got a small resmed airmini machine as well and yes you can use your airmini machine every night i use my every night and i am very happy with my airmini machine so far so good no trouble at all and it great to take it with you to traveling just pack your airmini in a case and put it in the carrybag with your mask and power cord The waterless humidification i use it in the winter time and remove it in the summer time i also got a app on my phone each day it will tell me how many hour i sleep the score and so on i also got a old resmed S8 machine as a back up just it case my airmini machine breakdown i can not sleep without machine the filter on the front of your airmini machine should be replace with a new filter every 3-6 month too much dust could damage your airmini machine. take care and keep safe richard

Hello, I just came across your channel and have learned a lot so far. Now for my job I travel a lot and use the resmed airsence 10 and my presure or prescription goes up to 22 (if this matters). I have been thinking about going to a mini for traveling and staying in hotels. would this work?

I have been using Airsense10 for the last few years and I used to travel a lot for business. By mid 2018 I bought the AirMini just not to carry the AS10 which is bulky. AirMini was convenient, expensive, but it is also adaptative pressure (which works wonders). I carried it in my backpack, but with Covid my traveling started being limited (I think I only flew once or twice in 2020)... and most of my few trips since 2021 have been short A couple months ago, while abroad, my AirMini stopped working in the middle of my sleep... at first this was for a few minutes and it would work back when unplugged. That happened for 2 nights in a row until I considered it was "broken". Unfortunately and by policy. there's nothing to fix. After 2 years the guarantee expires and you are forced to buy a new machine (1200 usd). ResMed doesn't sell spare parts or doesn't repair AirMinis. I try to explain to the ResMed reseller that I really haven't used it much (about 980 hrs in the 3.5 yrs span) and Resmed says the average life of AirMini should be about 18,000 hrs. So, If I buy a new one and this happens again I only have 2 yrs to expect for the machine to break so it could be exchanged. Other wise, it would be like a disposable thing every 2 years. This is preposterous, but they don't let you talk to them (Resmed) directly. So, other than paying a lot, now u can't be sure that u are getting a top quality machine... It has been really frustrating and I wish there are more AirMINI users reading this, so we can actually reach to ResMed directly.

In the US it's a whole structured ripoff system that shifts insurance premiums into the hands of MDs, vendors, and cpap manufacturers. I've seen my MD 3 times since July for the sole purpose of a cpap consultation as required by insurance. We haven't actually talked about my medical condition or the cpap use, it's never even been mentioned. Should we ship any leftover screws to Australia? Cheers!

Hey Nicko, sometimes component manufacturers have a small order sample system. Eg.. If you were designing a new unit, and wanted to 'test' their blower for your design, you would need to order a couple of hundred. Might be worth a try?

Jesus F Christ are we ever being had a lend of by the major companies Philips and Resmed and quite possibly even F & P as you would think parts for the F & P are not much different from the other 2. Think my next machine is going to be a BMC just on principal, I'm sure BMC have a decent mark up too but at half the price I won't feel half as bad as dealing with the other dead set burglars like Resmed and Philips.

Hi Howard, yeah F&P are the same. Here in Australia we're all getting f$cked pretty hard on the pricing. I guess you have to remember that there's a few stake holders that need to make some money before it reaches your hands. You have the manufacturer and also the reseller etc but yes the cost for components would be very low and the mark up generally very high. You only have to look the ResMed share price over the last 10 years to see they are doing exceptionally well. BMC is not a bad option. They've got a great 5 year warranty and the features / specifications stack up well. Cheers. Nicko

Hi there, unfortunately not. What these companies do is they use their Intellectual property and patents to make it very difficult for other companies to enter the market. Because they control so much market share it's also very hard for small companies to gain any traction as they don't have the resources to compete with such large and powerful corporations. There are some affordable companies that are about 50% less than ResMed with similar quality but you just have to look for them ;-). Cheers

I hate vendor lock in. You are always screwed. I am still waiting for my fix on my dreamstation1. I put that claim in last summer. I have ordered a resMed machine from my local supplier. Still waiting as they are backed ordered. Of course that will be out of my pocket. Thank God I ordered the air mini last spring. It is now my main machine used nightly.

Oh My God, how Evil/ Assh#le this company. I used s10 and airmini so my opinion The airsense 10 blower is stronger than airmini (have u ever checked blower s10? Im affraid it also same with airmini). And if air mini blower = airsense 11, Is this mean that air sense 10 quality is better than air sense 11?? And as far as I Know air mini cant be used for daily needs but only for travelling. But now they used the part of it for airsense 11 (daily use)?? And add a very high cost for something u can buy for 20$. Damn, I dunno which one is more jerk, Resmed or Philips...
