VERY IMPORTANT: There are **3** pressure sensors, not two. There is one on the back of the PCB, but it connects to a clear/white rubber gasket while the top two connect to a blue gasket. It is easy to accidentally misalign that back sensor. If you miss this sensor, the machine will blast you with max pressure, and then will only output very low pressure afterwards regardless of settings.

Actually, I think I found it, and I'm wondering if it's a piece that is where the motor connects to the humidifying chamber, just under the screw for the PCB.

I was supplied with a Res Med airsence 10 in August of this year and it's a great machine, it has done wonders for me. When I picked it up and inquired about a so clean system the rep at the medical supply company out right told me don't use it, he doesn't even sell them and don't buy one off the internet, he said stay away from them. He was adamant about it but wouldn't say why other than it's just cheaper to use soap and water and left it at that. I didn't get one and now I'm glad I didn't. Keep up the good work and thanks.

I work on vintage audio gear, but I also use a ResMed AirSense CPAP. I can tell you that Ozone does in fact degrade foam. I know because I have seen loudspeakers (with foam surrounds) used in rooms with Ozone generators, where the foam surround falls apart in just a year or two. Normally, foam surrounds last 15-20 years. I do not use Ozone for anything, as it is a health hazard in and of itself.

Just gotta tell you THANKS!!! the instructions you gave were great and allowed me to make my own decision about, in my case-removing, the foam in my Resmed machine. Also thanks for giving the quick "rebuild" instructions, very helpful. Finally thanks for your analysis of the safety of foam in the Resmed. You struck a good balance between "everything is ok..." and " ... for now". My machine is as quiet now without the foam as it ever was with the foam and I'm much more comfortable using the machine this way. In fact I found myself holding off on using the machine since foam-gate began, so who knows, maybe you added a couple of years to my life!!

Weird…when I got my Dreamstation it was brand new. I never once used ozone or any cleaner like that. Yet I seen these particles they were 100% foam (identical to the ones in this video) and happened 3 times over the span of me owning the device (9months). I really want to spread this because if this happened to me it must happen to everyone. It’s a little concerning. I spent 1100$ of money I didn’t have to get a resmed airsense 10 with a mask. I really hope i don’t have to worry about the foam. I mean for god sakes how hard is it to make something safe that works. I wear this uncomfortable mask every night to not die young. That’s it. That is the entire reason why I have a cpap machines. Would really love to know it doesn’t defeat the purpose and kill me slowly every night!

Love your channel. I just wanted to report an observation on this situation, I bought a used DS1 in Sept 2023 from a widow with the plan to use your Drain Weevil method to extract the foam and use it as a backup device. The machine was purchased new in 2021 in Jakarta, known for hi-humid hi-tropical heat, bad particulate air pollution. The DS1 had been used nightly in Jakarta for two years but with NO water heater/humidifier attachment installed and the unit was never cleaned with Ozone. The former owner never knew and was apparently never informed about the foam recall. The Drain Weevel extraction was successful and the foam blocks were removed in single pieces and exhibited good structural integrity. Removal left no residual dust or crumbles other than what the weevil shredded. In fact, the black PU foam was in much better condition than I was expecting given all the noise and outcry about how bad it was supposed to be. The fan housing had a layer of black soot like substance on the inside of the cover and a small amount of same on the impeller blades similar to what appears on the air INTAKE filter. That experience is enough to make me think the Ozone may be the primary culprit. Take a read of a Material Safety Data Sheet for Ozone, it is highly chemically reactive and generally very bad news. I think Philips has a point. SoClean's lawsuit may not be enough to save them from liability.

Just took mine apart (AirSense 10), I was so inspired! Some notes: - The ribbon cable for the heated hose can be popped off at the top. The end is slotted, so it can only go back one way by just pushing it in gently. It seems to be held by friction. - Same ribbon cable can have the slack taken up by rotation the hose coupler all the way towards the tank (might have that backwards, but you'll be able to see while you're doing it.) With the slack taken out, it won't get stuck between the hose coupler and the frame (like I just did!). Great video, everything went super easy with just a T10 bit, brilliant!!! Thanks Uncle Nicko!

Thank you so much for taking the time to educate me(us) on this. I've been on CPAP 22 YRS. We bought the SOCLEAN just before the Pandemic shut down but I stopped using it when I it began to smell like it was cooking it. I have a new Airsense 10 as of August 2020 and have not used the SOCLEAN AT ALL. My husband got his at the same time but continued on with SOCLEAN, BUT, stopped with Philips as a general warning. Now we can open up his and see. Thank you again.

When I first got my Philips CPAP I had nothing but trouble with it. Constantly bringing it back with pressure issues to it shutting off. Finally about after six months, there were so many things wrong with it, they allowed me to get a Resmed 10. When they were reviewing the machine, it actually broke more on them during the appointment. This is apparent that so clean is responsible for these issues but I will never get a Philips CPAP ever again.

Thanks for the information. I worked at the EPA monitoring ambient ozone levels in the past. I always wondered what the ozone generated from those So Clean machines would do to the plastic inside the CPAP machines. I didn't know that Respironics used sound insulating foam inside their machines. My machine was recalled and I got a new ResMed AirCurve 10 ASV machine now. I would not recommend using ozone gas made by high intensity UV lights for anything with plastic or foam inside it.

I remember when I first heard of ozone when I started my cpap journey back in June of this year. Even before getting my deathstation I knew ozone wasn't a good cleaning solution just because I studied chemistry in college and it was used on certain labs for some glassware and they advised you had to be out of the lab when the cleaner was in use. Even then, the preferred method was soap and water for most things.

Commercial ozone generators are often used in remediation after house fires. It’s recommended that all persons vacate the premises during operation with venting the home after the ozone treatment. Ozone can deteriorate many plastics, foams, and other material. I would never use it to clean a medical device unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer and certified by a nation certification agency. Cleaning my CPAP and assorted equipment I am using a vinegar/water mix, a good rinse, and air drying on a regular basis. Filters are replaced regularly.

Hey mate, i appreciate the comment. I would like to add though that unless you have been using ozone then there's probably no need to take it apart as you could potentially stuff up putting it back together etc. Only really required if you've been a medium to long term user of ozone and or have seen foam particles in your chamber. Glad you managed to check it out though. Cheers

I tore it apart yesterday because the motor was getting loud later at night during higher pressure and waking me up. After tearing it a part I found that the foam that was in it was starting to break apart. I currently am not putting So Clean thru the machine anymore but the damage has been done and there is no one to go back on because they both deny. So Clean should pay to have the motor replaced. Been using a res med c-pap without using this "So clean" and haven't had any problems or particles. Seems to me the "Cleaner" is the problem not the foam in the c-pap. The cleaner may be to abrasive or harsh and the chemicals may cause the foam to break down vs just normal use without it is just fine.

I have an AirSense 10 and only clean the mask/hose with it. The 2 times I actually ran it through the whole unit there was a notable ozone smell in my bedroom. Running it through the mask/hose entirely contained within the SoClean there's no ozone smell at all. The hose and mask are regular replacement items, so I'm not worried about them degrading before they're replaced.

I often wondered how the geniuses who build these things haven't introduced an additional in line air filter between the machine and patient. Typically the machines filtration is way below the standard for forcing particulates in a person's face for hours at a time.🤔 Not only should this be standard safety practice it would also help eliminate potential foam poisoning. Now.if a problem with filtration and humidity is an issue then the extra filter could be installed south of the humidifier still keep foam from entering ones airways.😎👍

@@Motojourneys unfortunately that's not how it works. It was strictly sound abatement and used incorrectly. Sound abatement foam can be used as long as it's not involved in the process of supplying air to the patient.

Excellent video, Nico. I use the AirSense 10 every evening. My current machine is 4.5 years old. The only time I use Ozone to clean anything is with my Sleep8 cleaner, and I only use it to sanitize my tube. I clean the reservoir with soap and water, then put it in a UV chamber along with the mask and head gear to sanitize those. Since I do not run ozone directly into the water reservoir and hence into the machine, I'm concluding that my foam should be as good as it was when new like the one you show in this video when you disassembled the machine.

I watched this a few weeks ago. All the sudden one night I was hearing a low humming noise from my ResMed 10. A couple days later I found foam I'm my water tank. I have yet to take it apart to look at the motor. I did inspect what I could see and only found it in the water tank. Thankfully I think the water tank is catching the majority of the foam. Thanks for the information. It has been very helpful. Also because of foamgate. Nobody has a loaner CPAP machine to use if you need to send yours in to get fixed. And if you buy a new one there may be a wait before you get it. Also I saw one company say one machine per person. I guess people bare stocking up.

I used a SoClean for a period with my 10 and after a year or so the machine made quite a groaning / whining sound during use due to an apparent internal leak of some sort. My provider replaced the device thankfully and I stopped using the SoClean and the AirSense 10 has been good for years now. I use a Sleep8 for my tubing and mask (and I stick the humidifier reservoir in there without the seal) but no ozone through the machine and things have been fine. I think for sure ozone can degrade the materials (even the silicone gets oxidized - you can see it turn a slight brown color after sanitizing), the hose and headset get replaced at regular intervals - not the same for the machine!

I've recently noticed some dusty floaters in water chamber of my 7 month old ResMed APAP several days after changing to replacement chamber of Airsense 10. Not using Soclean, just White vinegar & water mix & use a cotton swab to clean around edges if necessary. Keeping close watch for any particles of dust like matter. The machine is through DME provider APRIA Healthcare under Medicare. Contract. 🤠

You glossed over an important item at 15:22. It is important to get the 'C' fitting on the blower housing slid on to the "T" fitting on the case. You do it correctly, but it is very easy to get the 'C" fitting sitting on top of the "T" fitting. Everything will go back together, possibly with some extra force. But the pressure sensing seals won't work well enough.

And i KNEW THE so clean was not safe. They deserve to be sued bc they charge a ton of money and they keep charging money bc if the filters and adapters needed to keep it running. Ugh what a waste. Great video Nicko. Love your work. Now I know how to take apart my S10 (not that I plan to but it was nice to see the components inside). Just one point. I would not use the Dewalt driver (even with clutch) to screw back the screws. Best people tighten by hand otherwise they run the risk of sheering the threads if they overtighten with the electric screwdriver (or forget to put the clutch setting). You've probably done this thousands of times and know when to stop but if people are doing it for the first time they may run the risk of damaging the components.

I am with you on your advice, as well as using a hand operated screwdriver I also gently turn to screw backwards to locate the start of the thread, this means the screw engages the original thread in the plastic and greatly negates the possible damage to the hole. I repair most of my electrical appliances because often a small single component causes failure and parts are unavailable or prohibitively expensive. I also make a point of enquiring about the availability of spare parts and their cost when I purchase a new appliance!

I have a homemade cpap cleaner. I got a small aquarium ozone generator and connected it to the top of the water via a regular O2 hose. This goes into the tank through a hole in the top of the tank and runs down to the bottom of the tank. With the tank filled, I start the ozone generator and then manually start the cpap and lt cycle it 2 or 3 times. This method works well and cost about $25. The generators last for at least 2-3 years. BTW I live in SW Florida, home to molds, fungus, and all the rest of creepy crawlies. My only precaution is that the generator must be mounted higher than the tank or the water will leak out.

Nick - what I'm finding in my water container on a ResMed 11 is something black but NOT foam. Rather, it looks like these small floating, clear gel substance. And when I touch one of the little floaties with a paper towel, it attaches to the towel and in a short time, turns black. I saved these towels with black spots in baggies. Then I put a NEW water container on the machine, and opened a new bottle of distilled water. The next day, there were more clear floaties that turned black. I poured the remaining water into a clear container and the floaties turned black in that container within a day. I have saved this stuff but don't know what to do with it! I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THAT IS! I clean the water bowl, the hoses and nose pads with water with Dawn detergent and a little bleach. I never got this black stuff with the Dream Station before they recalled it, and I've only had the ResMed since Oct of 21 (right at a year). What do you think?

I disassembled my unit only to find that the sponge had started to deteriorate. I removed it as it is only a noise damper. Problem solved! No noise difference after removal.....not that I can hear. Don't forget to air blow motor before assembly as you might have sponge particles attached to the impeller. I have been using SoClean on my resmed AirSense 10 for over 5 years. The color of my sponge was green and the deterioration was negligible, but I removed it nonetheless as a precaution.

Here is a way to protect your lungs should a foam degrades on your machine. The clinic that provided me a loaner to try out the airsense 10 had setup with a filter right after the outlet in the back (for slim line without heat) to the slimline tube. I suppose this is not 100% proof, but at least it helps block a good percentage of those particles.

I never use my SoClean everyday. Maybe once a month. If I get a cold or bronchitis then I’ll do it once a week. I always clean my mask with soap and water at least weekly. Ozone is not good to breath either. When I use my SoClean, I run the machine for at least 5 mintes to evacuate the ozone by holding my thumb intermittently over the hose end to simulate breathing otherwise the machine will stop. I also turned off the reporting to Resmed in the tech menu.

Hey Nick, small world, I have that exact same tool kit way up here in the Pacific Northwest , USA. ITS GREAT for working on small equipment. (HomeDepot). . Sounds like foam gate is really becoming a donnybrook however, a lawsuit for 200 million? That's small compared to problem. Buggers have no balls :-) William Shatner used to advertise for them, I hope they don't involve him - he is so happy about going into space recently. You're on top of ozone chemistry so I won't go into but it probably wasn't a good idea. I worked in the semiconductor industry before retiring and we used ozone bubbles through water baths to clean off organic contamination of the wafers. "THAT WAS A GOOD APPLICATION " because it did not generate a hazardous chemical to be disposed of. Sounds like somebody didn't look at the MSDS for Ozone. I was lucky, in that my CPAP technician at my respiratory supplier did not recommend that. On a new subject, I suspect sleep studies are still not effective especially with covid - I saw your video on that. Mine were tedious. Being watched in a strange place, to get readings, then getting results, then going back for another with the new settings. Ya know we old guys get up a lot and my clinicians would only read in RIM state. Plus I have not has correction since then as my primary care physician doesn't monitor me but my respiratory service will do a reading. At the moment I'm having airflow problems so I am taking my machine in to check it out next week. I only use 6 psi and the metal in the water chamber is turning light brown, so something is out of whack. I may want to look into that phone app you talk about. Do you think malt Scotch instead if water would be better than water in the tank :-). ? Know your busy but one more thing that is universal - CPAP and Dogs. Whenever I put my CPAP on and feel that air I think of dogs sticking their noses out a car window and sniffing the air, so I call CPAP air, my DOG air. Always enjoy your enthusiasm and information.
