At the T-intersection of Weston Rd and the Highway 401 westbound off ramp, the north/south counterproductive leading pedestrian interval where turns aren't allowed has been removed!
This leading pedestrian interval led to safety issues as well as increasing delayed to people driving or those traveling by TTC.
A leading pedestrian interval is supposed to make pedestrians visible to turning traffic, to make sure turning traffic yields to pedestrians.
But at this intersection, turns are not allowed for northbound or southbound.
That leading pedestrian interval even put pedestrians at risk. When north/south traffic is stopped waiting for the LPI, drivers on the westbound off-ramp turn right on red to cut ahead without stopping, and forget to watch for pedestrians using the east leg crosswalk.
Now that the leading pedestrian interval is removed, north/south traffic finally gets to reinforce their right of way against drivers coming from the off-ramp that try to turn right on red and cut in front! This is safer even for pedestrians, as they finally don't have to encounter as many aggressive right turns on red.
I still really want there to be a "no right turn on red" sign. It won't increase conflicts with pedestrians and turning traffic coming from the on-ramp, because there are no pedestrian crosswalks to cross Weston Rd here. This intersection operates as "semi-actuated vehicle" mode of control.
Lastly, I really want the signals for the highway off-ramp to be upgraded to a 4-section with a red ball, yellow ball, green left arrow and a green right arrow (shown as signal "Type 6" in the Ontario Traffic Manual Book 12 section 2.3 regulation 626).
