@Hell N Degenerates Making an observation from 3.5 ft over water water means trying to exploit the highest level of refraction. Was the ship then fully visible? Or just the most part of it? Is there evidence that he really shot the image from the declared elevation? I wouldn't be very sure if a flat earther, naturally prone to lying tells me that. With a polar level of refraction (that is unlikely but not impossible in most cases), a ship 146 ft tall outside of the waterline (air draft) would be visible for the most part (with only 22 ft missing. In the same image, it there was an island behind the sghip, and it wasn't possible to see the shore, that would be an image disproving the flat earth, unless there are waves that reach 3.5 ft of elevation. Usually any "we see too far" image is always much more a "we don't see far enough" image that disproves the flat earth. Any case of horizon that hides something behind is an image that disproves the flat earth.

In that vein, what do we trust: 1- Well over 2,000 years of observations by some of the greatest minds in history using increasingly accurate equipment. Commercial airline pilots, long-distance surveyors, military ballistics experts, professional and amateur astronomers, etc., or... 2- The ideas, easily disproven, of a fringe group of people who do not have a single professional among them in any work then needs to account for curvature and/or rotation, and which have only gained popularity since the advent of social media? @@paradiseexpress3639 ABSOLUTE BS! Citations demanded! 1000's of years ago, people had already noted how ships disappeared over the horizon, how we could see further, the higher we got and how during a lunar eclipse, the Earth's shadow always had a rounded edge. Not being unthinking morons, they had long ago inferred the shape of the Earth. Eratosthenes had measured the circumference of the Earth in 240 BC and came within 50 miles of the actual polar diameter. He did this using simultaneous observations of the sun's position from two separate locations. In the 10th century, Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, this time using trigonometry, also calculated Earth's radius. Telescopes were invented in the 17th century and were used by Galileo to observe the craters on the moon, the Milky Way, 4 of Jupiter's moons and the phases of Venus. So LONG before the advent of social media, the shape of the Earth was a well known, indisputable FACT and NO ONE was killed for believing that. The ONLY debate concerning Earth's status, was whether the universally acknowledged GLOBE Earth was the center of the Universe, with the moon, planets, sun and stars, orbiting it or whether we orbited the sun. This GEOcentric model, with the SPHERICAL Earth at its center, had been around since ancient Egyptian and Greek times and was only superseded by the Heliocentric model in the 16th century. So, once again, mankind KNEW we lived on a sphere LONG before KZbin came along and allowed avaricious con men to easily spread BS to ignorant suckers, who valued the self-serving lies of science illiterate grifters, over millenia of incremental progress, by thousands of scholars, over thousands of years, with theories, research and observation, building upon previous discoveries, and all the while a constant refinement of those theories and ideas so they give predictable, accurate and repeatable results.

@@debraallen63 I get that you're upset for all the reasons you just stated, but who ever said that society categorically believes everything that their teachers taught them? One of the frustrations that you and I share is that people can believe things (from teachers, parents, the oligarchy, their peers, etc.) without having confirmed it through their own observations and/or experiences. Most will take other people's word for things purely because they don't have the life experience to reference. I personally wasn't taught about Santa in school, but rather from my kindergarten peers who were so excited to share this information with me. They were desperate for it to be true because that meant a lot to them. You and I both love libraries and reading, and I personally don't have any student debt to speak of, although I did go to college because I enjoyed it there. I also worked to pay off any tuition. I don't believe in COVID because what television and experts have told me. I don't even own a television. Most people in my generation don't. It's famously known as a Boomer/Gen-X device. I believe in COVID because in all the years I've been overworked by greedy bosses, knowing they were stingy about any days off even if unpaid (so I could catch up on my side job), suddenly I was getting some days off because of this virus! Finally. A tragedy, of course, but I've been working a long time and have never seen a "snow day" like the ones we experienced in 2020. You said "LIES keep you enslaved while the TRUTH makes you FREE. Use your own brain or someone else will." I respect your right to use your brain however you feel you should, but in all the accusations you leveled against me, an internet stranger, you seemed to have not used your own brain. Someone else has piloted it and is using to repeat their rhetoric almost verbatim. Everything you've written was parroted exactly the way I've seen it said so many times. As though there's no longer a unique human part of you that can communicate without falling back on the same phrases, same CAPS LOCK phrases, etc. It's really sad that you are so close to being on the right track (which is: don't trust everything you hear), but have somehow veered off into trusting the flat earth belief with vitriol against anyone presenting a thoughtful argument like Matthew Weathers has. Do I believe in a round earth? Sure. I've thought about it a while to make sure I wasn't blindly believing in it without question, but I believe in a round earth the same way that I believe my parents are my parents. (Was I there to watch them conceive me? Nope, and I'm very grateful for that.) I believe in a round earth the same way that I believe George Washington existed (probably). Was I there? Nope. But these are all things that don't harm me. It doesn't harm me or others to believe those things. I'm not losing out on the best things of life by believing that plants need the sun to grow. In fact, it enriches my life to know these things, because I can then build upon them and learn more. A lot of things in this world can't be proven, but I'd rather use my doubts and suspicions to fight the oligarchy and the poachers and all the awful things that do actually cause harm.

The only problem with the Eratosthenes experiment is that with only 2 end points, you can either assume the world is a ball OR you can assume the sun is close. A close sun casting non-parallel rays could account for the observation. So... the logical solution is to perform the Eratosthenes experiment with many many end points spread far apart, because assuming a ball and a distant sun, every endpoint will confirm a globe, but IF we assume a flat earth/close sun, each pair of end points will calculate a different distance to the sun which is a logical impossibility.

Very great response video!! By the way, if the earth is flat how can we go east from the U.S. to Europe/asia, or go west and also get to those places? Is the earth flat like a cylinder? Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. Nicely presented. There is actually one almost-positive thing that sometimes comes from the flat earth movement. I had ignored a lot of physics for a long time. I took flat earth assertions as challenges. I learned a lot from flat earth debunkers, and I'm grateful to all of them. Perversely, I'm glad flat-earthers came along to give me an excuse to affirm the obvious. :-) Related to odd notions of thermodynamics, Richard Branson's flight this morning really affected me. My takeaway is that looking at Branson's Unity or Musk's Starship today and seeing the connection to the first gunpowder rockets 900 years ago will earn appreciation for being thoughtful. Nine hundred years ago, someone looking at a gunpowder rocket and seeing the possibility for interplanetary exploration would have been thought insane. Never underestimate the power of dreams fueled by intellect and willpower.

I would enjoy some evidence of the exact measurements of flat earth. And if earth is flat, it's atmosphere should be cylindrical. Where do the clouds go at the edge ? How deep is flat earth ? Are all planets flat ? Why should we believe it's round ? Who would benefit from this misinformation ? So many questions.....
@AskenEman
@AskenEman 2 жыл бұрын
You can't measure the entirety of our realm no matter the shape as it is being hidden and protected. There is no edge. There are no planets. The powers that be used this information to control the masses. You can't control people with the truth. You have to deceive the masses to control them. Are you an atheist? Most atheists will not properly investigate this topic because they are committed to evolution and do not want the personal responsibility of possibly being held accountable, If you make it through all the programming and conditioning and look at reality as an unbiased researcher, you will see very quickly that the realm that we live in could not have formed on its own. If the earth was spherical, flat surfaces would cause water to recreate the curve. Have you ever seen or measured that? And if what we are on was rotating, a simple drone over the axis and under Polaris would put an end to that speculation. Point a camera up and one down on the drone. If the earth moves underneath then the stars will stay the same. If the earth does not move then obviously it is the sky that is rotating. Are you willing to admit that you have never seen the earth move but you think that it is reasonable to still believe that it does? You can tell that you have not thought about this very much as your questions demonstrate. If I were you, I would not look into it. You will only find that this world is upside-down and inside-out and everything is a lie. At least flat earthers have the balls to stand up against and speak out against their government. That is because if you don't recognize the creator then you have no God-given rights. You get your rights from the government which makes you a little slave. Cheers Mate. There are like a few 100 things, that dont neccessarly need science and mostly just observation or logic, that proof that the earth is a globe. My favorit: If the earth is flat, then why do you see completly different stars in the northern and in the southern hemisphere? Or: When it is Summer in the southern hemisphere, then how can the entire antarctica be lit up by the sun at once (!), even though flat earthers say, that the antarctica is an ice wall at the edge of the world? Or lets make it simple: Flat earthers say, that the gonverment came up with the globe earth and that they pay millions of scientists, cartographers, austronauts etc to keep it a secret, that the earth is flat. So how can it be, that the gonverment doesnt send a kill agent to those flat earthers, who spread their "truth" around the internet? Doesnt make sense, huh? Conclusion: Earth is a globe. Oh and if you still dont believe me, here are 10 challenges for flat earthers to prove their theory (actual experiments/observations): kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4LPaZttdsZqa9U
@MatthewWeathers
@MatthewWeathers 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with your conclusion. You mentioned "When it is Summer in the southern hemisphere, then how can the entire antarctica be lit up by the sun at once." That's a good argument. Related to that is the fact that a 24-hour Sun has been observed from the South Pole in December, and this 24-hour sun rotates counter-clockwise (when looking up). It goes from right to left. In the far North, by contrast, a 24-hour Sun can be observed in June that goes clockwise and moves left to right. The only response to this that I've heard from Flat Earthers is that those videos of the 24-hour Sun must be faked. Or that you shouldn't look at the sky to inform you about the ground.

shouldnt one with a drone and a cord to measure the altitude of the drone, or if the drone doesnt fly that high a cameara on a balloon be able to measure the radius of the earth doing some weird calculations?
@MatthewWeathers
@MatthewWeathers 2 жыл бұрын
That might work. It would be easier to do by just going up on a tall mountain. The difficulty is that it's hard to precisely measure the angle to the horizon since it sometimes gets refracted. So it wouldn't be very precise. But I like the idea of a cord to a drone - since that would be a direct measurement of the altitude.
@doofismannfred4778
@doofismannfred4778 2 жыл бұрын
@@MatthewWeathers Al-Biruni did that. There's a sweet spot, though. To high and the horizon is to hazy. Too low and the accuracy isn't so great. Modern tools make it easier to pull off, though, and it certainly isn't the method we use today. But, it's still a method.
@Robert08010

That first comment is completely illogical and quite sad. In Trig, you might start with one or two known measurements (lengths or angles) and then use math to calculate the remaining lengths and angles. Nobody then quick gets out a tape measure to prove it. Its well known that you can calculate the measurement to a higher degree of accuracy than you could measure it.

Explain why all the stars are in a fixed allignmemt relative to polaris. When the earth is moving around the sun while the sun is moving around the galaxy. How do we still have the same constilations in the sky.
@MatthewWeathers
@MatthewWeathers 2 жыл бұрын
They're not all fixed. They just move very slowly. For example, Vega, one of the brightest & closest stars changes declination by 286.23 arcminutes per year (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vega). Also, Polaris itself doesn't have fixed alignment - it's declination is +89° 15′ 50.8″, not exactly 90°.

As an always-learning homeschooling mother I would rather have questions that cannot be answered rather than answers than cannot be questioned. Why do the majority of people become arrogant and/or rude when you ask questions about a "flat" earth? It makes me even MORE curious as to why the "globe" earth idea is so vehemently defended... ADDITIONALLY, when I clicked on this video there was a Google blurb underneath telling me the earth is definitely not flat. And there is your answer. Google "telling" you what to believe means the opposite is true.
@MatthewWeathers
@MatthewWeathers 2 жыл бұрын
Mrs. Hartley: Thanks for your note. I agree about having "questions that cannot be answered rather than answers than cannot be questioned." That should be the goal of any good education, to teach students how to think for themselves and to question the answers they've heard. The topic of Flat Earth brings up strong feelings for a lot of people because it's seen as a classic example of anti-intellectualism. So for many people, when they hear someone say "The Earth is flat," it sounds like they're saying they're against logic, reasoning, and critical thinking, and people who believe in the value of education and science become angry at that. I don't think it's specifically "globe Earth" that's vehemently defended, but the process of thinking well, understanding science, and reasoning logically that they're vehemently defending. They see Flat Earth ideas as opposed to proper thinking and logic. As for the Wikipedia blurb you see under some videos: those are placed there by KZbin for videos on certain topics in their effort to reduce the spread of misinformation (at least "misinformation" according to their definition.) @@ThomasKundera It’s more worrisome to me that a large percentage of publicly educated children in the USA are failing in the areas of reading, writing, language arts, spelling, mathematics, etc.That is not hyperbole, these percentages are listed for every school district. My children have consistently placed (through standardized state testing) 1-6 grades above their current grade in every single subject. Children that are actually educated have critical thinking skills that will stay with them for life. @@hartleyfamily5451 : Thanks for answering, I understand some of what you said, but have some comments. _"My children have consistently placed [...] “higher” education from a prestigious university"_ Thus you should not compare your children to the average, but to the average of children from parents having a post-graduate diploma (home-schooled or not, that makes a huge difference, 'reproduction of the elites, etc. I hope you teach them some sociology too). _"actually educated have critical thinking skills"_ I dunno for your case, but afaik, home-schooled kids in the US are mostly from religious families, indoctrinating them in some form of a Bronze Age Jewish myth, with disregard for modern Cosmology, Evolution theory, etc. Or even, here, as it could be felt, flat Earth. That's not "critical thinking", but dogma. Of course, I may be wrong in your case. _"“higher” education"_ in an area is good, but hard to have it in all relevant area. Anyway, I can feel your dedication and proudness, and I'm sure you do your best; which is anyway to be acknowledged.

@Matthew Weathers. When explaining,use simple logic. Gravatity plus everything straight down into the center. Therefore the earth must be a sphere because that is the only shape the has all points on the surface the same distance from the center. If the earth was flat it would instantly try to become a sphere due to gravity pull on everything at the same time and at the same rate to the center of the object.
