Jay's legacy isn't the Tonight Show it's Jay Leno's Garage. He truly loves cars . Like what he's going to do with this car is perfect he isn't retromoding it or trying to make it perfect. He is the greatest car collector on the planet period.

Wow!😮 This has to be one of the best shows on anywhere. No mean comments, no "online bullying" & no disparaging comments about the show’s host…just 4.5 thousand car-enthusiasts who do their own work, or folks who can afford to pay a professional to bring their car back to the shape of their choosing. I must’ve put a 1000 hours of my own labour into that car, which was-along with my Hayne’s Manual-an easy & enjoyable way to learn how to do your own work. Now my sister has what will be a very desirable MG with overdrive, chrome, & leather. I miss driving, but I love to watch Jay’s show. He seems like a kindhearted gentleman. I’d love to spend a day/week in his garage & listen to him talk about cars, people & more cars. Thanks!

About 25 years ago, a friend let me know his neighbor has a V-12 XKE in his garage. I asked the neighbor if we could look at it and he reluctantly agreed. Feral cats and assorted rodents had taken up residence in the car. In addition, the roof of the garage leaked. In our humid climate, there was nothing left worth restoring. With the rear window and windshield broken and the door windows down, water had accumulated and rusted through the floorboards. The engine was locked, most of the aluminum was heavily corroded and the almost of all the upholstery, along with much of the wiring insulation, had been reduced to rodent nests. So sad, happy to see this one survived! Thanks for sharing this story.

yeah, first I thought just another XKE, but man that was something, what a find? I have a old Volvo 144 that im the third owner on, I try my hardest to balance between 100 original and not restore it, I only polish it with an oily rag and try to maintain it as it was when I got it. Just an old Volvo with +300tkm on it but I love all the dents and signs of a hard life, and besides its not that worrisome if someone bumps into it. I had a chineese exchange student who ran into it with the bicycle when I was drinking coffee outside a barrista and she started crying about denting my old car she was really sad, I just laughed and told her to try to find with one of the bumps that she had made, and I would pretend to be mad for her.... Just told her to have a nice day I was more worried about her falling off the bike, she was so grateful and took pictures of my car and me, I wonder what she used them for...?

Great show Jay!. Back in the early 80's when I was way younger, I bought a 1963 Volvo 122S, 4 banger vehicle. I drove for while without doing anything to it. Then I decided I liked it enough to refurbish the car. Rebuilt engine, new paint, and vinyl flooring & upholstery, and then there was, the destroyed, cracked dash where I was stumped about what to do. I was pretty good with my hands, so I carved a new dash out of a single piece of walnut, and it fit pretty well, not perfect, but you could not see that it wasn't a perfect fit. Finished the walnut with stain, and several coats of sun resistant finisher. Then just a few months later, someone climbed over a fence, and lit it on fire, destroying all my effort to restore the Volvo. A big let down, at least got to drive it several hundred miles.

I’m so jealous of all you restorers of cars. You live in a country that appreciates historic cars. I brought my 1973 MGB to South Korea twenty years ago because I really like that convertible car and enjoy driving it on the roads here, especially in the fall in the mountains when the trees turn that autumn red. But there is a sad tale too. Here when a car is four years old, it is considered OLD! There is little car culture here. Yes I do receive thumbs up when on the road but every two years it must pass a safety check that includes emissions. All cars must pass this test as there is no class of cars exempt. At the same time all cars must be exactly as they came off the production line. In fact each time I must show the original owners manual so they can go over every aspect of the engine including the air pump, all the lines and the exhaust system. But the car must pass the ever increasingly strict standards. I just barely passed in the past years. This year I may not pass and the car will not be able to be on the road and may be crushed. I know if I put on a catalytic converter it would easily pass but that was not on the original car so it is not allowed. I can make no modifications to the car to lower the HC and CO. etc. It is an impossible situation. No modification to pass is allowed! Also as a roadster it is considered a dangerous car and the insurance doubled last year! It may be the last time the car is on the road, so wish me luck. Oh yes I have owned the car 32 years!

Thank you for what you do It’s nice for someone that has resources to do what Many of us old gear heads would have loved to do. Keep it up as long as you can.

Lots of wonderful things happening as always at JLG. If I was a young man in LA, I'd be almost begging the man for the opportunity to just push a broom around that place - there's so much to be learned there! - Ed on the Ridge

Loved the show on the 63 xke garage find! As a former owner of a new 1961 external latch e type roadster, a 63, 66, 67 and a74 v12, I'd like to offer some observations regarding your 63 Jaguar. 1st thing that I noticed was the thin white wall tyres. All 61 through 64 series 1 came with wide walls. My opalescent green 61 looked fantastic with them! Another thing I noticed was the full bulbous exhaust tips that can only be found on pre 64's. Please keep them on your e type! Ive seen so many restorations that use the later model skinny exhaust tips on the early models. NOT exactly period correct. Hope my memories are of help. PS. I also had a xk120 coupe and three 56 xk140MC roadsters. Rob Patterson in Toronto

The Just Dashes segment was awesome! Would love to see more stuff like this of small specialist shops that support the auto industry. And that E-type!! In love! The first European car I ever rode in was one. In love ever since.

That’s an amazing find for sure. To think it was within walking distance of you all this time. That’s just 1 of the awesome stories cars end up with. I’m a collision repair and auto paint tech. And I agree, the paint in quiet sure will come back Nicely. Can’t wait to see it after get it cleaned up! I live in KY and I always wonder what’s behind the doors in some of these old barns. I’ve seen some amazing cars just rotting away! Get that thing cleaned up and running jay id love to see how that paint and interior looks after.

Wow. When I was a kid in 1963 Reno , my dream was to own a 63 Jag. The convertible was advertised for $6,000 . The fastback was $6,500. Later in college in the 70s I saw a used one sell for $1400 . I thought ."I can do that ! " I looked everywhere and couldn't find one even close. Some car editor ran an article informing the world they were a good deal. LOL so I blame him for blowing my chance at getting one. I think car guys are like fisherman... the good one always gets away.!!! lol. I think your decision to preserve it is a great idea. Good luck . I hope you'll let us see your progress. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks for the update, Jay. I was noting the process at Just Dashes, as I had called them for a quote to repair a very simple dash pad from my 1977 Buick Electra. They wanted nearly $1,000 to repair that pad! I only paid $2,000 for the car. Even with the cracked dash it won a Gold Senior award at the Buick Club of America National Meet last June. Some of us are on a more reasonable budget when it comes to our cars!

Seeing this car brings back alot of memories. I had a '65 Triumph Tr4 with a ford 2000cc engine and ford manual transmission. I installed a VW radiator, redid the interior. Added a new Convertible Top also had a custom tonneau cover. I installed a GM single wire alternator. Rewired the car and replaced the dash with solid walnut. Cleaned up the stock Lucus Gauges and installed. I rebuilt the Engine and reinstalled it. The car was a blast to drive. Had the stock wheels and hub caps. I had to hunt down a replacement ring and pinion gear after it exploded going over some railroad tracks. Sending gear teeth through the differential cover. I managed to find a replacement in a very old local wrecking yard. Where I noticed a frame overgrown with vegetation, upon inspection realized it was a TR4.

Jay, thank you so very much for your commitment to the preservation of our automotive history. Over my lifetime and our son's, we have had the privilege of owning a 1934 SS I(I had this while stationed in England with the US Air Force, 1959-1960), a 1956 MGA, a 1962 MGA, and a 1964 Jaguar XKE Coupe. I am sure that you can understand why I wish that we still owned them, but in every case, they have gone to good homes. Thanks again for the joy you provide to those of us who enjoy the beauty of this hobby.

That is a beautiful XKE. The color almost looks like a rose tint. Can we get more of these behind the scenes resto videos please, it was so captivating seeing everything your doing and the interview and shop tour of the dash place. @Jay Len's Garage hey Jay, do you do hands on with some of the resto as well? Be cool to find out and see you taking part if you do. I love hearing your explanations of everything.

I believe vacuum-forming came out of the aerospace industry during WWII with the advent of plexiglass/acrylic "bubble" canopy production for various aircraft, like the P-38 Lightning, P-51D Mustang and P-47D Thunderbolts. Seeing that vinyl sheet get sucked into place on that dash was magical! Amazing process - glad the Justdashes team is providing such a specialized service.

Wow, Jay staying busy for sure, what a true timecapsule you found on the Jag, I just seen a fully restored 63 XKE sell on Mecum for 90K of course it was red, what you have found with all the factory markings still intact, this car could be used as the factory standard for reassembling a 63 Jag, it is factory perfect, just incredible it was sitting a mile down the road, thanks for all of your knowledge and sharing with all of us, all the best to you.
