Restoration of a Police Officer´s Gold Watch - 1940´s Bulova Excellency

This time I´m restoring a Bulova Excellency from the 1940´s. It´s powered by the Bulova 7AA Caliber. I got this watch from one of my biggest fans and supporters. He got this watch from his dad (a police officer in Clarksville) and all watchmakers refused to repair it... until now.
Case and Glass are scratched, dial and the hands are corroded and the movement is running wild.

My uncle gave me the exact same watch back in the late sixties. I still have it. Had it cleaned up in the late eighties. Still runs. I will keep it forever.

Some good techniques . However, always put the movement plates up so the do not scratch in your washer . Your dial cleaning was just silly . I like your use of rodico . Coke works great on rusted screws . The fiberglass brush could be more course , the old ones are better . Flitz is a must have . I like your small UVB light but be careful , over time it will damage your eyes . There is wood ( small )pellets to dry your hair spring, jewelers dust it is called . You should have pith wood your jewel holes better . I thought I seen shellac . I also liked your tape to hang onto the second hand . I would be careful with tape around dial print . Especially after a dial cleaning solution.

I have a similar watch, an Elgin, that other watchmakers have refused to work on. It's a shame that something could survive this long, yet be considered "useless".

Speedy I'm sure you noticed the equipment involved! IF the shops you went to had that equipment,they would have to charge You quite a bit! They simply don't Care to or can't go to the Expense!

excellent video!!! great work!! its exact date is 1953 you can tell by the L3 on the back the L stands for the 50'S and the 3 stands for 53. m=60's n=70s and pre 1950' just has serial numbers.

I restore old phones and the products you use are verry much the same as I use for the dial. ( I love Hagerty's). Instead of cotton buds, I use Kosmetic buds, they have one end with cotton and the other end is a pad. The pad is stiffer than the cotton and it dosen't fussel. Polishing small surfaces is much easyer.

Always admire your work. Curious though, why did you time the balance spinning from the blower. I get the logic but never seen it before. How do you determine if the hairspring travel is good. Is there a formula?

If my pause analysis is correct, this watch dates from 1940… you can tell because Bulova puts a date mark on the back of all of the cases. L0 indicates 1940, M0 would be 1950, N2 would be 1962 etc. As always, a beautiful restoration. I am continually impressed with the steadiness of your hands, you should’ve been a surgeon!
