@grumpyoldman539 ай бұрын
I just caught the videos of this rebuild the other day and it brought back nightmares. I did the exact same thing after I bought an old Victorian built in 1890 in the 80s. Including removing a chimney from the third floor through a kitchen fireplace to a summer stove in the basement. It still had the gas lighting in the walls, and the octopus gravity fed hot air coal stove in the basement. The roof was goose feathers with cedar shake and 3 layers of roofing slapped on top. The house was built from 40' sticks rough-hewn onsite. The outside walls were three layers; the original clap board with wax paper, cedar shake, covered with asbestos siding. That was replaced with over 50 sheets of 3/4 ply, 42 new windows, and new siding. I had a hole from the basement to the third floor because of the butchered floor joists when they ran the old lead drains through the floor boards. The floor joists where only held on the outside walls with a 1x6 cut into the outside sticks. I spent sooo much time rebuilding the old frame, and repairing the double brick foundation because of the unfiltered sand they used in the cement, causing the mortar to turn into dust. There is one thing I hope you are spared. Because the frame was roughhewn, the sticks were only even on the outside edge. Inside, the plaster and lathe hid how thin or thick it was because of how uneven the inside edge was. I had an old Sears table saw from the 50's that I used to rip 100s of 2x6x10s to sister every single stick so I could put up sheet rock. Because it was balloon construction I also had to place hundreds of fire blocks floor and ceiling level. Where I had to replace the floorboards, I used 2 layers of 3/4 ply for the floors to level up the 7/8 original subfloor and 1/2 ply. Thousands of nails. The ceiling on the first floor was 9 plus feet, 8 1/2 on the second floor. I couldn't afford so many 40 cu ft dumpsters, so for years I took truckloads of plaster and lathe to the dumps, paying by the lb. Tens of tons and I mean tens of tons I cleaned out. And my biggest mistake I made(other than buying the damn house in the first place), was living in it in it while I was doing all this. 19 years and still not done when I finally sold it. This being NJ, my taxes being $1,700 in 1986, went to $13,000 when I sold it in 2005. Tired of getting screwed by contractors, I learned ALL the trades. God bless you for saving an old house when it would have been easier to burn it down and build new. I also had to chuckle when you found things where not always built the way they should have. You are also so lucky to have a couple of buds helping you. I was alone. Good luck!
