The plastic was sold under the name Delrin, and was used on many knives as 'jigged bone'. Really nice restoration Kyle. I have an old Sheffield knife that needs some TLC.

Just FYI. I have noticed that in the last videos, I watched over the past few weeks. The Audio is a bit unbalanced, 70-80% of the audio coming through the left audio channel for some of your shots. So just wanted to let you know, in case you aren't aware. I'm using headphones when I watch youtube content, so it can be a bit disorienting at times. Most people watching on their TVs or phones etc. probably won't notice it as much (if at all). Keep up the great videos and the beautiful craftsmanship, always a joy to watch.

A bit of flattened copper pipe would help fit the guard back on. Clean restoration.

I have a knife of the same model, but on the heel it says "self-defense" and there is an American Indian drawn on it. The rest is practically the same as the video. In its restoration I respected the bone scales because they were in very good condition. Congratulations for your work.

I found a naked blade tang outside from this maker. I want to make a new handle and guard for it at some point. It has the frog logo on it too!

FYI those scales are genuine bone.. especially on such an older knife like that I have several vintage pieces with genuine bone handle scales

Absolutely gorgeous piece of wood for those scales 😍😍😍😍 I've seen a few restoration channels, where they sometimes use electrolysis to remove the rust from metal where they don't want to be grinding it too heavily, and I was wondering if you've ever used or considered using the process? Fine work as always 👍👍👍👍
@sandralth3 ай бұрын
Have you ever tried using a piece of pct to use as an a drift to slide over the tang to move the guard?

The new stag handle looks a lot better than the old broken one,,
@Mister_Ess Жыл бұрын
That knife came out beautiful all it needs now is a genuine leather sheath. Just a question, what's the process for polishing the wood handle scales after you sand them down enough? Can you just use a buffing wheel with some polishing compound? Or is some sort of oil required?

Sometimes you have a lot of responsibility in hand. Antiques. Wedding gifts. And one slip or drop could be a disaster.
@kennethseymour1374 Жыл бұрын
original handle was jigged bone,, I would have replaced the broken scales with stag and not polished the blade,, leave the 100 year old patina.
@davidparker3346 Жыл бұрын
jigged bone scales not bakelite.
@AndrexT Жыл бұрын
Delrin plastic jigged bone. 😉 It was popular in that era and a fraction of the cost of stag or bone.

I am a bit concerned that you didn't replicate the shape of the grip.. the new scale shape now makes for a round handle which makes for harder blade alignment and weaker grip. You can see the original handle was more oval in cross section. Also you messed with the heat treatment of the edge when you grounded it flat like that. It would have been nice had you been more careful on both counts.

Very efficient way to almost destroy all history of a blade. This is not a restoration. 😅
