I think most of the the negative (and sometimes rude) reactions is in the video production. A lot of screen time was devoted to showing it with very rough edges, so it left a not-pleasant taste that lingered for a while. It did with me, honestly. But I was waiting to see what the polished end would look like, buffered by the fact that I saw your second video showing another razor restoration. This one polished nicely in the end tho. Kudos.

I don't hate the handle design as much as other commenters, although the original was still better looking in my opinion. But, from a functionality and practicality standpoint, I can guarantee this thing will not last very long. Neither the wood nor the blade were treated to withstand water (unless you did that and didn't film that part of the process for whatever reason.) As anyone who wet shaves knows, water plays a pretty prominent role in the use of a straight-razor, and it's only a matter of time before it enters the wood and causes swelling/warping and rusts the blade.
@SonOfAHerbert5 жыл бұрын
I never thought to make an integral / unibody handle like this before with no wedge or other parts etc. I think I'm going to use this method for my restoration and do it with some nice curly walnut. I've never seen a straight razor with a wooden handle. The reason is that they get wet when you shave, the wood swells and you can't get it to open. Most razors had a horn handle. Also this one is ugly as hell.

Your blade is phenomenal, no one can criticise that as you did an amazing job. Quite often generally assumed knowledge of an item can be lost in history and I think your only error was being born too late. I’m just about 60 and I only remember my ancient grandfather, who was 80 when I was born using one until they came back in fashion in the early 80s. I was taught by a hairdresser how to use one, and you need to be able to feel the blade and have all the balance there. Obviously I can’t comment how your handle feels, or how getting wet will impact on it, but unfortunately it doesn’t look too efficient. A good attempt though and as someone commented you can change the handle and the blade looks amazing.
