I saw your second attempt before encountering this video. 1) Great restoration of the blade. 2) The handle is pretty good, especially considering that it's a first/early attempt in doing so. I think most of the the negative (and sometimes rude) reactions is in the video production. A lot of screen time was devoted to showing it with very rough edges, so it left a not-pleasant taste that lingered for a while. It did with me, honestly. But I was waiting to see what the polished end would look like, buffered by the fact that I saw your second video showing another razor restoration. This one polished nicely in the end tho. Kudos.

I don't hate the handle design as much as other commenters, although the original was still better looking in my opinion. But, from a functionality and practicality standpoint, I can guarantee this thing will not last very long. Neither the wood nor the blade were treated to withstand water (unless you did that and didn't film that part of the process for whatever reason.) As anyone who wet shaves knows, water plays a pretty prominent role in the use of a straight-razor, and it's only a matter of time before it enters the wood and causes swelling/warping and rusts the blade.

We all should have learn a lesson from this video: haste is always your enemy while unfamiliar work: When you don't know exactly what are you doing, make a pause to learn the right technique / grab an apropriate tool. It's true that author did fine work to bring to the blade the shine back but he: 1. damaged old handle 2. didn't do anything to protect razor from rerusting 3. could do much better with a new handle. The good thing: number of fingers in this video is constant and we all learnt a lot.

As an amature who has restored a straight razor, I am having a hard time saying anything nice. The treatment of the original ebonite handles was appalling. I mean, using a screw to knock the pin out, over a mangled steel vice? Then an ugly wood handle, ridiculous!
@knownbarkert6153
@knownbarkert6153 5 жыл бұрын
You chose to state your opinions, so I might as well to. This man chooses to do what he pleases, therefore if he wants to use a "ugly" wooden handle he can. From what I saw he had no control over the old handle breaking. You do things your way, he does his things his way.

It's a guy sharing his hobby. Let him. He had fun doing the restoration. He never claimed he was a professional. I wouldnt call it ridiculous either. You don't know his money situation or what he can get and can't get. The best works man is a worksman who can improvise and make do with what he has. Before complaining, do better yourself.

Great video here’s my thoughts Not a bad concept just needs more development. I think the shape could be improved if the neck was a little shorter, I would also cut the gap in the wood thicker.

Your blade is phenomenal, no one can criticise that as you did an amazing job. Quite often generally assumed knowledge of an item can be lost in history and I think your only error was being born too late. I’m just about 60 and I only remember my ancient grandfather, who was 80 when I was born using one until they came back in fashion in the early 80s. I was taught by a hairdresser how to use one, and you need to be able to feel the blade and have all the balance there. Obviously I can’t comment how your handle feels, or how getting wet will impact on it, but unfortunately it doesn’t look too efficient. A good attempt though and as someone commented you can change the handle and the blade looks amazing.
