Bubblegum Crisis - The Story of Knight Sabers 1987 This IS Japanese animation at it's finest!!! This was the Golden Era, the Japanese were decades ahead of their time with this free-style art form!!! Even to this day the animation still looks incredible!!! I still have the original OVA Laserdiscs imported from Japan on this show!!! Those truly were some good times!!!

@@fmartin59 A Japanese Pen-pal, this was waaay before the internet!!! We would communicate by writing and mail our letters to each other overseas. I told him about Japanimation, and he sent me magazines on anime shows, I started this hobby in the late 70s into the 1980s. Also, my college buddies, we were all hardcore nerds and geeks dedicated to this hobby culture. Mobilesuit Gundam came out in 1979, I got my first taste of Gundam in 1981!!! I found out about Mobilesuit Gundam from a relative who was stationed at a U.S. Air Force Base in Japan, he used to send me all kinds of cool stuff from Japan!! 1987 is when my college buddies and I first saw Bubblegum Crisis. In 1988 we were the first to see AKIRA before ANYBODY even knew about it!!! My Pen-pal from Japan sent us a S-VHS copy of AKIRA in Japanese language, so many shows we viewed that were absolutely unheard of here in the U.S. during that time period!!! Gundam, Bubblegum Crisis, AKIRA, GunBuster, Crusher Joe, Dirty Pair, Robot Carnival, Kamui no Ken, MACROSS, and hundreds of other anime titles!! I also attend the very first anime convention in the U.S., I believe it was either 1990 or 1991. I think it was called Anime -Con 1991, and it was in San Jose California. That was more than 30 years ago!!!! My God, has it been that long?😳

@@iangarrett3308 OMG, Animecon! Wasn't that one of the first major anime conventions in the US (I know it was the precursor to Anime Expo)? Wasn't that also where Sailor Moon was introduced to a lot of fans? What was great about the early anime cons was how the Japanese guests would "let their hair down", so to speak, because they knew the Japanese media wouldn't be keeping track of them.

I always liked how you can sorta see anime art evolve in this show, since this OVA lasted until the early 90s. From slightly rough 80s animation with complex shading, to that really bouncy, 90s looking last episode with a more pastel color scheme.

This was one of the calmer episodes, with nice scenes of Priss not moping around being very vaguely suicidal, and a minimal AD Police body count. By the way, Leon did not use "an RPG." It was a pistol, not a rocket launcher. The actual projectile appears to have been a bullet-trap type grenade, probably with a plain HE warhead (a shaped charge would not impart enough force to divert the car). Such a grenade is usually fired from a rifle barrel, but Leon's macho powers let him use a revolver chambered in Stupidly Magnum.

As to which one(s) he did first, I'd have to guess the Modat & Garlands of MZ 23 were the precursor drafts to Highway Star [which didn't transform] and the unused design that could transform--the artwork could be found in the RPG supplement. By the same token, Mospeada Ride Armor [ie Robotech Third Arc of Cyclones] concepts were also refined for the Motoslaves that could transform into independent robot humanoid drones OR extra armor with weapons for the Hardsuits

Both series are great... a lot of the basic mecha designs were re-worked from the original for 2040. I could be wrong, but I feel that the motoslave & 'super bike' concept were recycled and expanded by the newer production team when BGC 2040 was made...it's a shame the rumors of a next season [BGC 2041] never panned out.

that attention to detail not just to the vehicles but also the road and background or environment is insane!!! It's clear this like Gundam ZETA inspiried the mech style in the 90s, but I would say this feels more like the darker stories like Evangellion and Blue Gender. the fashion in some of these old animes/shows are badass! it still feels timeless it inspired the way I dress til this day, dark green or blue shirt, (button up and tucked in) dark military/work style coat, black pants etc, everything with an athletic fit (since I lift and run) and usually spiked hair. damn these OVAs were too ahead of their time.

I was around 16 years old when I saw my first bootleg tape of BGC in 1990-1991. Whoever made those bootlegs back then always cut the endings off which fueled my future purchases. lol since then, I've pretty much bought just about every US release including the Laserdisc's as they became available from Animeigo in the 90's. I still have them today! I haven't bought the most latest blu-ray release only because I have the KickStarter Ultimate Edition. :wink:
