He didn't forget. One of his last thoughts before becoming Femto was his relationship with Guts and how it made him forget his dream. His love for Guts is actually part of the reason he abandoned his humanity.

The Truth is that Griffith did a lot of wrong even before become becomes Femto, I know this because Guts on his place will never sold anybody. I think the reason this show has a follower's cult, it's because Griffiths and Guts are everywhere around the world, not only at gangs also at School, neighborhood, the working place, both are a very classic troupe in real life groups... Many with based on reality similarities...

the 3d in the 2016 tv show is done horribly and just looks ugly in general. The Golden Age Arc film/OVA, though it also used 3d CGI, its animated well. Don't know why they didn't just get the same studio to do the tv series.
