In case you didn't know, h6 & a6 (or h3 & a3 if reverse) are indeed elements of the hippo setup, it's just a different order intended to prevent bishops checks/pins which would force c/f advancements and throw black's pawn setup out of whack. The a6/b6 & h6/g6 pawn combo creates a net, so if white pushes their pawns onto it, you can then lock up that side of the board with h5/g5/a5/b5, possibly preparing an f5 or c5 pawn break (which is the major motif of the hippo). It also provides support for storms if black decides to play a more active hippo, like in the case of this game. At least, that's my understanding.

Thank you for explaining the deflection sacrifice with the bishop at the end. I understood that particular move, but it's hugely helpful to have language like that to identify the underlying concept so that I can carry it with me beyond just this one move in one game. I saw knight to D3 and Bishop to G4 before Danya pointed them out and i don’t typically see moves like that myself, I’ve gained 100 elo points in just over a month after a year of stagnation, thanks Danya, the prophet speaks softly and carries a big stick on the checkered battlefield
@topnotch32322 жыл бұрын
So I see somebody commenting asking to have bishop G4 explained, although for some reason the comment exists only in my notifications and not on the thread, so I will explain it here hopefully they will see this. Bishop to G4 pins the Queen to the king, so the queen cannot move out of the pin, and if the queen takes the undefended bishop on g4, black plays Knight takes F2 with a fork on the king and queen, a really cool tactical sequence.

Awesome game. It is cool to see how black breaks this "annoying" setup by white every time. The white player is not thinking and playing his/her moves immediately. The white strategy seems to be to get up on time at the expense of a worse position.

Nice. I'm struggling to break past 1700 on lichess 3+5 blitz. I feel like opponents have gotten stronger like crazy in the 1600 range there because they probably watch these vids as well. King's Indian and Alapin structures have become super common and they are often crushing.

Danya, I've binge-watched your stuff the past week or two. All of it. You are a brilliant teacher, clear and precise. And an entertainer too! But, bro... you need to find new expressions for "biting on granite" and "re-invent the wheel". Sure, they do their job but please consider them folks retired now. Be as creative with your language as you are with your teachings and your chess. Btw, I saw you on the Botez stream the other night and I very much enjoyed your talk on chess history. That's the kind of shit that enrichens our perception of the game! You are amazing! Keep it up!

Why does it seem like many of the people who watch him on twitch have no short-term memory.. Whenever Daniel mentions some idea and then uses the very same idea with the exact same moves in another game the answers he responds to are baffling and the people behind them don't seem to have remembered what happened just 30 seconds ago. And not to be too negative but I do wonder what it does to someone's mental state if you have to entertain and teach the average twitch viewer for a living.
