Review: $199 NordicTrack Adjustable Dumbbells... Get Some!

I saw these NordicTrack Adjustable dumbbells 10 to 55 pounds for $199 so I snagged a pair and put together a review for you all. I've had these now for 1 month and use them 4-5 times a week. For the $199 they are gold in my opinion. Some things that I really like about them is the shape of the dumbbells. The edges have flats so they don't roll around increasing chance of damaging them. The ends are flat enough to kick them up when pressing higher weights without feeling any discomfort from any points or edges. The flat interiors also make this comfortable to do French presses with. Also, at lower weights the dumbbells have a good profile, they aren't super long at a low weight like the bowflex 552s and at higher weight are a similar size to regular hex dumbbells. The mechanism to change weight has been reliable and fast for me but I do occasionally have to give them a wiggle. My dumbbells and trays came in perfect condition so no complaints there. I didn't buy the stand for these, but they are cheaper (about $100) than competitor's stands (I just use the box they came in as a stand). Now for the things I don't like about them. By far the most annoying part of these dumbbells is putting them back in at heavy weights, especially when the 2.5 and 5 pound increment plates are in the tray. Sometimes it can feel like you have to come in at the perfect angle to get them to nest properly. I wish they also had +7.5 increments as well, I find myself often thinking 20 is too heavy for a particular exercise, but 15 is too light. The grips can start to feel a little slippery if your hand is sweaty so I wish they knurled the plastic more aggressively. Looking on the inside they appeared to use some kind of glue to fill gaps within the locking mechanism. I don't think the glue impacts the lock up itself, but maybe the amount of rattle. There is some play in the locking of the plates, but after inspecting the locking mechanism I don't think they could fall out unless you engaged the lock while lifting or there is extreme wear on the interlocking plates. These plates are held in place by 3 things. First, the plates themselves have a groove on each side that the adjacent plates slide into, preventing them from lateral movement. Second, the metal bar that slides in the center when you pull the blue tab prevents the plates from dropping out of the intercalations on the plates themselves. Last, the blue tab itself sits in a groove that adds some stability to the ends. All in all, these dumbbells seem to be fantastic value with some minor quibbles that in my opinion are completely justified at the price of $199. My local Dick's had some on display so you might even have a chance to try them out yourself.

I have these. Bought them when they were $300. Have had them about 6 months or so. My wife was using them and one of the change plates fell out, not sure if it was securely locked on the desired weight. She put it back in backwards and it jammed it up and I could only use the 5 pound change plate. Just fixed it after 4 months in about 3 minutes by backing out 6 screws, correcting the plates, and tightening back up. They have never let me down besides that. Quick way to change weights. Negative: can be difficult to rerack especially at the higher end like 40-50 pounds as it doesn’t like to line up perfectly.

I use dumb bell handles with 8 10lb, 4 5lb & 2.5lb plates. The handles are 10lbs each. I think I paid about $140 maybe less & I use quick clamps, they work great. I could see how these would be perfect for someone in an apartment or someone not looking to have a lot of equipment to store or just someone who only wants free weights and a bench. I would definitely buy them if that was the case. $200 Isn’t bad at all

I couldn't believe it when I saw that price! I can't speak on the durability against the Select-a-Weight set because I've never tried those but these seem pretty durable but definitely not as rugged as my Bowflex adjustables. Thanks for checking in Brian!

I noticed the dumbbell handles are not designed like the Bowflex. Especially when you change the weights to a lower setting as this gives you the appearance and feel of real dumbbells. The Nordic Track adjustable dumbbells increases in size as you increase the weights which in my opinion is how all adjustable dumbbells should function. Thanks for review.👍

Thinking whether I should buy this or the powerblock 24 since the most that I can bench press is like around 10-15lbs and i'm sure I wouldn't be able to reach 55 lbs but it wouldn't hurt to have the extra weight. Personally, i'm leaning towards the one with a better build. I just don't know which one. They both have the same price. What do you think? (I'm a women btw)

Good morning Jea, I have a pair of Power Block Sport 24's at my children's mom's house and they are solid! Built like a tank and I feel like they are going to last forever. Depending on how you lift you may never need or want the extra weight but one thing I do know is that most women that I train do not like the width of this style of dumbbell. These are built just like my Bowflex SelectTech 552's and just about everyone of my female clients has commented on the width. As you get stronger you could do super sets where you benched the 24's and then followed it up with a slow moving push-up or something of that nature to change the resistance. It's definitely a trade off. I jumped on these because that price was so good but it's hard to tell you exactly what to do based off what we've talked about here and your future plans but I can say this. I can destroy my body with a pair of 24lbs dumbbells and that's what I use when I'm at my kids home. I have a video Livestream where I'm doing that and I'll link it so you can get some ideas. Got mine yesterday and looks to be used or refurb because the straps on the dumbbells were already cut. Other than that, everything seems to work fine.
