Review: Is The 2018 Toyota Tundra Still Relevant in the Full Size Truck Market?

With all the full size trucks being redesigned recently, and some of them twice since the Tundra's last major overhaul...is it still relevant as a full size truck? It still offers most of what people need but technology is definitely lacking compared to competitors. The competition has moved to a more premium feel, while the 2018 Toyota Tundra still feels like the rugged truck it was meant to be, with a dash of luxury on higher trims. This Limited Tundra Crewmax trim is a middle trim but still offers a good amount for the price. We take it for a test drive and see how it is!

Thanks for watching! Let me know what you think of the truck and the video 👍 I did a 5 Likes/Dislikes in the Tundra: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHPJhp6Go65ggc0 Although other full size trucks have all been redone recently, you can’t go wrong with the Tundras proven track record for reliability and ruggedness.

I'm going with the tundra, it's a truck. Don't want start/stop. That kills the starter. Don't want cylinder shut off, that just kills the engine. Not worried about fuel mileage, why, it's a truck. If I wanted fuel mileage I would keep my Subaru

Ya it’s a truck... silverados, rams, & F-150’s are trucks too. And they don’t look like they’re from 1997.

You could go with a diesel truck which probably gives you alittle better mpg and will hold its value decently well,also you could haul whatever you wanted!!!
@thekidinthecorner123

Marc Aliventi Aliventi the problem is you’re buying a brand new truck and they are just falling behind. I love the look of the truck but hate how Toyota just slacks on all the little things. It’s also not a normal starter, it’s different because it has to work more. If you want a truck like that then why not buy a 90’s truck? Besides, it’s not like a v6 is that crappy, if it’s not enough power then why wouldn’t you upgrade to a 2500 or 250?

I just bought this same exact truck. I traded in a 392 Challenger so fuel economy wasn't high on my list. I couldn't haul lumber or concrete in the Dodge so truck shopping I went. This truck is BIG and like a lot of people are saying and this guy said theres no experimental engines or transmissions just a good reliable drive train. I think it rides very good, and road noise? I don't hear anything that bad. Of course I'm not shooting a video with the sunroof OPEN stating theres road noise, just say'n. I like the truck, I like the design and I like the non turbo charged or supercharged engine and reliable transmission. Overall I think its a good value. If I had to pick something I don't like it didn't come with side steps which I promptly fixed and I wish I'd gotten the premium sound system.....that's about it.

It is hard to fix what is not broken and proving. However there are a few tech updates that can be done to keep up with the newness of the competition. Keep up the good work

Dan Soderholm agreed! I once read an article about why Toyota engineers didn’t add cylinder deactivation and something else to the Engine and they basically said because it doesn’t last. Lol. Gotta love reliability! Thanks for watching!

It's notable that the vehicles most likely to reach 200k, 300k, 400k miles -- according to vehicle data -- are the Tundra, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Sequoia and Tacoma. Those are all body-on-frame Toyotas that are arguably behind the times but tough as hell. Also, tops in resale value. If you're gonna keep it forever, it couldn't be more relevant. If you're going to change up every 3 years, the more modern US trucks are a better deal. Good, vid. Better all the time.

Very well said. The long lasting nature of these vehicles make me happy. My wife and I each drive a Toyota for that reason 👍. Seems like tons of people go the short term ownership route and that’s probably why the others are constantly adding things to them. Thanks for commenting and watching again! Appreciate that!

They reach high mileage because Toyota never brings out the next generation. No reason for people to upgrade if their same truck is still for sale 11 years later.

I drive a 04 F150 so I have no complaints about the tundra not being up to date cause it's all an improvement for me. I like the style and reliability and I live 2 miles from my job so im not concerned about mpg. Just gotta wait for my truck to crap out so I can buy a tundra

It IS very relevant! I'm starting to move away from the Silverado and more towards the Tundra, and that's coming from me as a Chevy fan. I'm not liking the way Chevy is taking things. If I work at my Toyota dealer in the future like I plan to, maybe I could get a good discount on a new one. I cant wait to see the redesign in hopefully 2020!

Still going strong at 400,000 miles...another buddy with a Tacoma work truck 300,000 miles and all he said hes done was oil changes seriously...for my preferences longevity I will put my $$ on a toyota...but if i want something bigger I'll go for a diesel Chevy 2500hd...otherwise I'm lovin my tundra

I'll sacrifice MPG ANY day over active fuel management. Have you heard the horror stories about AFM & DFM? Our daughter's vehicle had the GM 5.3 L V-8 engine with AFM. A real crop duster! Had to keep quarts of oil with them whenever they traveled. GM turned their head to the problem. When they took the buyout from the government, GM now stands for "Government Motors"! Also, how about the stop/start feature on the Silverado. I don't want my engine shutting off unless I want it to. More wear and tear on the starter and battery! Tundra doesn't have it. Go Toyota.

@Irven51
@Irven51 5 жыл бұрын
Frame rot was only a problem on the dana made frames on some tacomas years ago. I own a 2016 and have little to no rust on it yet. My 2008 Tundra had no more rust than any other manufacturer after 145,000 miles. I live at 5,000 ft elevation where roads are salted each winter. Be careful with snippets you hear on the internet. If you aren't, you might believe that ecoboosts blow up all the time, since some have.

Yeah for me, it’s good enough for a truck. I’d have no problem owning one if these. A lot of people are critical of it for not being “redesigned” or drastically upgraded since like ‘07 but it had a refresh in 2014. Ram has a 12” screen, Chevy and Ford 8” and they have Apple carplay/Android Auto while the Tundra’s 7” doesn’t. It’s still responsive enough though. I’ve got another Tundra video and people definitely hate on it for being “old”. I’m with ya though, it’s a solid truck all around

Not a bad review. For the Tundra, sure its reliable but has fallen considerably as they have not updated the chassis, engine and even some materials/fit and finish compared to the big three. The Japanese offerings are very behind the big 3. GMC,Ford and Ram all offer more luxurious rides with better mpg, luxury appointments, ride and handling characteristics which makes them more modern and a more comfortable place to spend time in. Toyota charges a premium for this dinosaur as well thats years behind the competition. Until they update the trucks and suvs i would not touch Toyota.
