If nothing else, I can tell that Saber Interactive RESPECTED the universe of 40K and that clearly shows in how they depict factions, weapons and vehicles like dreadnoughts and helldrakes. And after the past few years with things like marvel and halo being filled with people who confess to hating the source material finding something like Space Marine 2 feels like finding an oasis in a heatwave in the middle of a desert!

The deathwatch aren’t a penal battalion. It is actually considered a great honour for a marine to serve in the deathwatch. Space marine chapters voluntarily send some of their best there to serve the emperor. That being said there are some of their number who having done something wrong in the past do penance in that unit. But that’s a minority

Also the Spacemarines/Ultramarines do take their time for some banter, thoughts and talk about their mental states & feelings. *But* they do not dwell on it for too long and do not let it interrupt what they all know needs to be done. Masculinity & discipline does not need to exclude humanity. Its just that the Warhammer universe you have not much time to talk or even show how depressed or hopeless you sometimes are. Cuz it does not change anything. Only action changes things and every Space- & Ultramarines who has seen tons of regular Soldiers and even other Space- & Ultramarines fall, knows, that not even the most honorable and ultimate of sacrifices might turn the tide. But they do it anyway? Why? Cuz no one is coming to help humanity, thats why. The most divine guy really is your own Emperor and all that the Imperium can do is to hold out until he might resurrect through some miracle. And maybe then they can truly make some progress again in the universe. Until then stay strong Battlebrothers and hands off the soymilk.

But Warhammer 40.000 is (or at least used to be) a satire, born from punk sensibilities of the 80's. For example Orks are very un-Tolkien-like because they are a go at infamous British football hooligans - they act and even speak like those, and their leader Mag Uruk Thraka is named after an unpopular right-wing Prime Minister of the time. Astartes too are about as much the good guys as Starship Troopers or Judge Dredd - impressive role models and protagonists you root for until you are not 12 anymore and realize what kind of people they actually are in the setting.

Small correction 1:54 the Death Watch isn't a "Penal battalion" for Astartes/space marines, it is a specialized force that works alongside the Inquisition to hunt down the most dangerous and lethal alien life forms/threats in the known galaxy. Some marines are sent there to perform penance for past misdeeds. The basic premise is that "Well, if you are loyal, and are truly watched over by the emperor, then you will overcome the most dangerous and arduous tasks given to you"; in short, you might be redeemed if you manage to survive fighting the absolute worst the enemy xenos species can throw at you. All this while under the direct scrutiny of the Inquisition who have the power to declare exterminatus on entire planets and/or brand chapters of Marines Excommunicatus Traitoris (which makes them a kill on sight for any loyalist faction in the Imperium)
@Herdatec2 ай бұрын
Most see getting send there as an Honor. Every chapter HAS to send one Guy there, when that guy dies they have to send another one. After a few hundred years of service, some do return to their Chapter.
@chasewilson36932 ай бұрын
As stated in the above reply, its actually considered a massive honor to most chapters including the Ultramarines. Only a sparse few consider it a punishment and usually because those chapters hate the inquisition and consider being under their purview a punishment, not because they dislike the idea or actions of the Deathwatch itself.
@Arphalia2 ай бұрын
@Herdatec correct, the death watch is intended to be a reward, however it can also be used as a measure of punitive punishment for marines that may have done something wrong in the eyes of their Chapter leadership and/or the inquisition, but not enough to warrant outright execution.
@petriew20182 ай бұрын
honestly this is kind of Warhammer in a nutshell It's not a penal legion. At least not officially. It's just where the secret police sends the problem child marines to go do the exceptionally dangerous shit with a high mortality rate. But it's not a punishment, it's the Imperium allowing you the highest possible honor : to die in glorious service to the Emperor. but it's totally not a penal legion, guys. Mind you i absolutely love this setting because of how outlandishly over the top everything is and how no fucks are given for the usual good guy/bad guy dynamic.... but yeah, it kind of boggles my mind that some people actually get butthurt when you point out that Warhammer is, at it's core, satire.

Just a bit of a correction on the Deathwatch bit. They are not a penal company of dishonorable chapter members. Those are the Black Shields specifically within the Deathwatch. They are stripped of chapter iconography, their histories are scrubbed, and some have even their names taken away. Most members of the Deathwatch are veterans from other chapters that serve short (short for a Space Marine at least) terms as Deathwatch members to help give their knowledge, prowess, or their resources to the DW. Kinda think of them like as elected police officers that are taken from other prominent precincts. They’re conscripted, serve some time, then return home. Most even keep the left silver shoulder pad and left arm while they dawn their original chapter heraldry so in honored remembrance. Black Shields are those that have to serve a penance. They’ve either failed important missions, been accused of some manner of treachery, and some Black Shields even serve as tithe to pay for their chapters failings that they were in no part of. The Deathwatch need members pretty desperately and cannot afford to not use even those who have done wrong. They’ll take what they can get. And if some members have to serve longer periods of time in order to “redeem” themselves the Deathwatch is all the happier. If y’all ever want to discuss 40K ad nauseum I’d love to goob about it to a ludicrous level sometime. Hit me up.

Rogue Trader rpg came out this year, and recently had its first dlc, too. For an also amazing, but way more lengthy experience into 40k, complete with the (by now) usual romance options of an RPG, can heartily recommend. Accurately depicts the 40k world, like SM2 did, its combat (unlike most other rpgs) throws dozens of enemies at you all at once, emphasizing the setting you're in, most of its main characters are unforgettable and grow on you, whilst you get to feel like a noble on crack with so much money and wealth on your hands you dont even need to buy anything in the game - you just take it. It also features enemies pretty uncommon to Warhammer games, namely Tzeentch, Eldar+Dark Eldar and Necron. I think the Nids make an appaerance in the dlc, too, so do the other Chaos Gods in the main game in minor, but not insignificant ways.

Absolutely love rogue trader. I've been slow-burning my way through it and it's probably the best western RPG I've ever played. The richness of 40K lore really shines there, as well as the fact it's more 'ground level'. Not giant armies battling it out but just you, your few mates in your retinue trying to keep shit from falling apart. (well you have a big starship too, but that's small potatoes in 40K) The main character being accountable to almost nobody is also a refreshing take on the universe. Seetting up a comfortable seating area with a buffet cart while waiting for your number to come up in an administratum waiting room while solving peoples problems to skip ahead in line was brilliant.

Titus being considered heretical from the first game for handling a massively corrupt item is normal. Its like a Demon popping out killing half your squad then fist bumping you then walking away. The Imperium still doesn't fully understand that a person of single minded purity is highly resistant to the warp could be a thing. Since you know most people have at least a sliver of a dark side.

The Bio Titan op just dropped today but the cry babies are crying about the newest difficulty added complaining about their “power fantasy” being ruined 💀
@the_redpyro49062 ай бұрын
@@Mystic_Punanyyy It's not the addition of a higher difficulty, it's everything they did to the lower ones. They went the Helldivers route of nerfing everything functional because garbage wasn't being picked. Case in point: fencing melee weapons (the only ones anyone picked because balance and block melee weapons are terrible) They also made the lower difficulties harder "because they were too easy" in an update that adds a much stronger challenge for... reasons? It's better for a developer to do one of those, not both at the same time. Give the casuals their fun and the hardcore player's their challenge, don't strip it from one to appease the other. They should have just focused on adding challenge in the new difficulty.
@Mystic_Punanyyy2 ай бұрын

@@the_redpyro4906 to be fair, fencing weapons were good, because they are much easier to parry with. And nothing changed with fencing weapons at this point. I've played most of my time as melee - and it's still the same. While I haven't played the game myself, there's a lot of people that would disagree with his opinion on the PVP. From what I've seen, the class based system seems to add a lot of depth in the PVP as the classes have strengths and weaknesses that support one another pretty well. The main gripe from what I can tell is the PVP gamemode doesn't offer much variety in terms of objectives.
@DatAsianGuy2 ай бұрын
eh, it's mixed bag of reception. some love it, others hate it. the biggest sin imo is the lack of a shoulder swapable camera perspective. meaning every time you walk to the left of your screen you are always at an perspective angle disadvantage, since the enemies will see your hitbox, before you see theirs. for pve that is fine, but the pvp suffers from that imo and the devs already said they won't do that in an update, which sucks.
@EarhirX2 ай бұрын
I think it is because most people play it as if it was another generic shooter, guns blazing and challenging everyone, instead of getting into the role of each class and actually seizing each class’ characteristics and recognising their weaknesses
@andrewboyer75442 ай бұрын
@DatAsianGuy they said they would have to update every animation in the game to make that change to the workload was just too high to implement the feature.
@nigelbotterill19362 ай бұрын
@EarhirX totally agree. I keep getting stick on teams that act like its cod while the other team are working together it gets so annoying
@DatAsianGuy2 ай бұрын
@@andrewboyer7544 That's a strawman argument. Nobody or at least most people are not asking for adding and reworking all animations just for a camera shift. They are simply asking to shift the camera. No need to add new animations. The devs just have an ego about this topic, because they designed a lot of the character animations around the camera being on the right shoulder. Sword held in the right hand. critical shots having a dynamic close-up shot, etc. And they want to keep it cinematic. I don't care about my camera being "cinematic" in a pvp mode. I am interested in a camera that by bad design doesn't fuck me over when i decide to do something as simple as move my character to the left.

Game was fun and looks great, but it's a bummer how short it is
@jimster11112 ай бұрын
these linear games tend to be shorter because of the massive amount of content built in to every minute of gameplay. especially in a game that doesnt rely on filler content to pad out the run time. and instead relys on high octane addrenaline rushes to keep interest up. compare this to starfield. you might theorhetically get a couple hundred hours of gameplay out of that game but how much of it is treading through an open world and dealing with fetch quests? with space marine 2 every single corner is jam packed with tailor made environments, interesting skyboxes, groups of enemies, and interesting platforming. and to be honest this is a lost artform. and is rarely tried in modern gaming because of the shear amount of time these environments take to build. takes you 30 seconds to run through a hallway that someone took 10 manhours to design and decorate.

0:39 - 0:51 You just described my thoughts and feelings with 40k: I tried to join the Imperium years ago, but got turned off by the absurd prices of minis, the fact I had to paint them myselfs (I suck hard both in painting and in picking up good color choice for designs) and the fact I would have no close partners to play it. Nowadays, after "Space Marine 2" was launched, KZbin algorithm recommended me A LOT of nice 40k stuff, including lore about my now favorite faction: the Salamanders. The best part was to find about the Joytoy 40k action figures. They're very cool and waaaay cheaper than the minis... and I don't have to paint them. It's only being tough to choose if I'll buy Space Marines from the Salamanders (my favorite faction) or from the Ultramarines (because the online store I'll buy from also sells Dreadnoughts and vehicles, but only for Ultramarines). I also started to play the "Dawn of War" series, and I must say: although Salamanders are my favorite faction lorewise, in terms of gameplay my favorite ones are the Orkz. It's absurdly fun to play with them.
