It's been 20 years since P90X with Tony Horton dropped a neutron bomb on the world of home fitness. So how does it hold up after all this time?

@@ordinaryretrogamer6944 Interval X is straight up the "Intensive Training" workout we used in Navy boot when I was there in 2005 just slowed down a little. Which makes sense because the captain in charge brought in civilian fitness professionals (I think Tony may actually have been one of them) to build a new program (he didn't like how easy PT was when he first got there, he came in after the "timeout card" guy and immediately threw all of those into the trash, massive respect for that man).

This was used extensively in Ranger Battalion and Special Operations in the early 2000's when I was there. I can't blame the program as if you actually took the time to look it up on their website there were physical prerequisites they suggested you'd be able to perform. If you couldn't meet these requirements they suggested one of their easier exercise routines. Every time I brought this up people looked at me like i just made it all up on the spot.

The first time I did p90x and was able to stick to the schedule perfectly. I was working retail at the time and I was carrying 3 or 4 boxes stacked on each other. A kid ran around a shelf right in front of me and to not run him over I stopped on a dime on one foot, and held the pose like the F*ing Looney Tunes Roadrunner. P90x was the first workout program I stuck with. It was easy enough to do from home with minimal equipment, and I was too nervous to find a gym. After that, I had a lot more confidence, eventually found a good gym and it's been 15 years of consistent exercise since then. It was hard to do consistently at first, but worth it. I can't imagine how much worse my health would be if I hadn't given this program a try. Literally life changing.

I did P90X back in 2010after seeing pictures of myself from Christmas of '09 - I was pushing 230lbs at 5'-9". I kept catching parts of the commercials then decided to look it up on KZbin - I found quite a few former Marines, both men and women, who posted their personal videos. Being a former Marine myself I knew I had the discipline so I went for it. In 8 weeks I went from around 228lbs to 187lbs and was jacked - I ended up injuring a shoulder doing the corncob pull-ups. I was recovering then tore something in my knee doing something else... That slowed me down. Then I had a motorcycle accident where I broke both wrists (one now has a plate and cadaver bone). I eventually got through all that and did P90X 2 more times over the next few years but I modified it to prevent injury. BITD I worked out like we all did at the gym, like a body builder would, P90X turned a gear in my head - These days I still use a lot of the concepts I learned from P90X and now just do a few exercises every week that incorporate all muscle at the same time while also focusing on particular muscle groups, as well and every day do stretching including the primal squat many times a day. I'm about to be 58 and and really keeping it together - I still have the OG P90X and think I may have to dust it off for a cycle... Thanks for the memories

My husband loves these videos. We got them back when they first came out and still do them. I do a modified version of it, but they are still in our rotation of working out. That yoga is no joke. I don't remember which routine I did but I remember that I was so unbelievably sore. I actually couldn't stand up straight. I was walking around hunched over, hinged at the hips for a few days. Everything hurt. The DOMS was actually insane and I've never experienced anything that bad since even with harder workouts. I remember it was so bad that I was supposed to go to a friends place and I had to tell him I couldn't go because of this. I don't think he believed me and I don't blame him. I don't think that I would believe someone if they said that they did a workout so brutal that it kept them from being able to stand up straight.

@@nikitaw1982 lmao bro if you're trying to get into fitness, I wouldn't recommend P90X as a starting point. I'm much more fit now than I used to be back when I first tried it and I workout 2-3 times a week and have been for years. But the thing that gets me results is consistency and realizing this is a lifelong thing. Make it easy to be consistent, make the workouts short and easy and FUN until you're doing it regularly for months. You can ramp up intensity after you build consistency. And you can ramp down intensity when you want to as well, just be consistent with the workouts and incorporate progressive overload into your workouts and you'll get results over a few years. The biggest thing is to realize that it is not a short term thing, fitness and health is something you should prioritize for the rest of your life, otherwise you'll have more and more physical problems as you age. You don't even need to lift weights necessarily or do calisthenics. You can play a sport or something else that you find enjoyable and is going to get you closer to the goals you want. As long as you're consistent and as long as you're pushing for a little bit more each workout, you'll make progress. For a long time I did rock climbing as my main activity because I found it so much fun. Built a solid back from that. Over time I've transitioned into some calisthenics and weight lifting instead. If you haven't read the book Elastic Habits by Stephen Guise, give it a read or look up a synopsis on KZbin. It's got a really simple but effective system to build habits that actually stick. There's also a fitness channel on KZbin that I really like called K boges. It's just a no bullshit channel that makes short videos talking about sustainable training philosophy and methodologies. Remember this is a long game, a multi decade long game. Don't worry about immediate results. Good luck man.

I remember my first time doing P90X Plyometrics. I ended up on the floor in a puddle of my sweat unable to move for half an hour. I still have the DVDs i should start it again.

I did P90X back in early 2000 and had incredible results. Been meaning to go back to it but man it was it tough. I did the whole thing, calorie deficit, 7 days a week, etc.

ahhh yes I did several of these P90X cycles...well almost finished the entire 90 days.....ok I never finished the full 90 days. There isn't enough recovery time built into this program. I think most people attempting would agree. I definitely learned a lot from this program though!

I agree. The routines are great. But you have to be careful about over-training. I never do more than 3-4 P90X workouts per week.

I think it's relative. For me.. I was actually able to adhere to the schedule and completed his courses with great results. The soreness lessened to the point where I actually look forward to training every day and I find it manageable as long as I don't train the same muscle groups too closely together.

I found there to be plenty of recovery time. I like doing p90x in the am and then doing body beast in the pm. The first couple weeks may be a little rough, but the results are amazing.

I did 2 90 day rounds back to back. I got into amazing shape at age 50. But you can't sustain that pace. As you said...there is not enough recovery time. And if you can just feel mentally comfortable (don't feel like a failure) with plugging in a couple of rest days during the week, you can enjoy great workouts and make the program more sustainable.
