I think about camera menu systems like I do about public toilets. I try to go there as infrequently as possible, do my business, check my shoes, and leave. Once upon a time (think Nikon and Canon DSLRs) you could go to the menus once, when you bought the camera, set some stuff, and return only to change the time twice a year. Sadly, nowadays certain camera manufactures (I'm looking at you Leica and Fuji) make you tiptoe in there past the yellow puddles all the time to make the darn camera DO stuff. If it weren't for that, I'd be jumping on your case to stop obsessing about menus. Or maybe you should anyways. Save your sanity. Menus are basically distasteful. Why worry about which ones are somewhat less so. Mind where you step......

I would definitely get one, but it's not in my price range, what will be however, is all the first gen GFX100 cameras that are going to flood the second hand market (and have already be flooding for a few months). Time to upgrade from a 50R to a GFX100 brick (with tilt evf) :D

I love the photographs of New York and Lancaster, Pennsylvania you showed today. Your rural eye is just as amazing as your urban eye. Inspiring. I felt like I'd been transported back to "Blow Up" with your zooming in on details. In the one building photo, I thought you were going to zoom until I saw the expressions on the faces of the people behind the building's windows. Nice morning video.

I have an x2d....probably won't change but it is something I'd have really looked at if it had existed 6m ago.....if the x2d fixes their focus then no. The H is just a lot nicer to use...and at this level, as you point out, it is about the experience too. The images are not likely to be better or possibly even equal...the color science of both companies is amazing, but the H colors are to my eye nicer.

I really like my X2D and the color rendering is fantastic. The more I use the X2D the more I flip the focus ring to manually after the autofocus has done the first “in focus”. It would be great with a focus firmware update 🤩

GFX 100 II is an interesting piece. From 35mm user perspective, it's a medium format that's more affordable than Leica M11. And from medium format user perspective, it's also more affordable than Hasselblad XD and Phase One. A local Fujifilm product specialist told me that Fuji indeed want to bring medium format to greater audience. Really hard to resist. I still shoot with 35mm film for fun and that's way I still keep a FF body. But now given the GFX's price tag, I started to question if FF is still relevant. Want small compact camera? Pick APSC or M43. Want big? Skip FF and get MF.

No doubt. It is why I watch his reviews. He has street cred, literally. So many other You Tubers take a $4K body into their back yard and take a picture of their nephew playing with a bucket, or in other words a shot literally ANYONE could take with a cheap camera, then proceed to pixel peep it to death. It's the equivalent of someone taking a Ferrari and driving their kid to school to see how this baby handled in a school zone. This guy shows what the camera can do when someone makes full use of it and sees what this baby can really do.

I had a GFX100 for a while. Loved the 16-bit images and the ability to create enormous prints (10’ x 5’) with no perceived pixelation no matter how close the viewer leans. But the 100’s ergonomics were poor and the spongy plastic control dials did not suit a $500.00 camera, never mind one 20 times the price. Now they’ve rolled out what looks like a beautiful camera, but I’m all-in with the Z9 these days and do not see myself in a hurry to revisit the beautiful but often slow (and knot breathing corrected) GFX glass lineup. I hope they do well with it. I think the camera world is a better place with a $7500 medium format design in the mix. But given the amount of video I do these days I’m much more curious about the Blackmagic rollout two days from now.

For a traveling companion, The Leica SL3, Hassleblad X2D, and Fujifilm GFX100II will be an interesting competition around similar price rance especially taking consideration to the lenses each offer. One is full frame with video, One is medium format with smaller lighter lens, One is medium format with video with mainly heavy lenses (especially on the wider end). Do you have to have video? Weight? Flash? Size? Internal Storage? Hmm, time to clear my preferences.

This would be a dream come true for a wildlife photographer like myself, but the price point is just too much for a hobbyist like myself. While you zoomed in on the GFX's 100 MP image I was thinking about all my "too-far-away" shots. The most ingenious point of all you talked about was the thought of a adjustable flexible EVF! You always keep me thinking, it's the quality of my images that is more important than the image quality of my camera. Thank you for your time and talent, and particularly the high quality of your audio, it does not go unnoticed.

There are no wildlife lenses for this camera so the cropping wouldn't help you much. Much better off with a full frame 45mp body and a lens that actually has some reach. There's still a lot of room to crop on those.

Thanks as usual Hugh. Ironically, I just recently shelled out for a mint used "the first" GFX 100. I had one previously, but this example seems better than my original. Subsequent to that, I'm just back from a major overseas session with my X2D. They are both great systems. The Hasselblad colour science is outstanding and they challenge you to see what you can do with a couple of focal lengths - given the price of their lenses! The GFX 100 is a brick - literally and metaphorically - but the total camera/lens ecosystem has a lot going for it. Plus the tilting EVF which I love. "A small thing but mine own" to quote the Bard, one thing that I love about my GFX 50 and 100 is the really robust power connection for charging and external power. USB C be damned whether it is Hassy or Fuji!

I was at the House of Fujifilm introduction event today. which was fun but also a bit comical at times (The summit video introducing the GFX100 II is dreadful in so many ways). Thoughts on the camera. If you like the feel of the GFX100s, you are going to like the feel of the 100 II and with the grip attached, the camera whilst feeling heavy does feel a long nicer in the hand than the GFX100. EVF is amazing. AF is very good from what I could see. I took a few shots on an overexposed background and the camera focused with eye detection easily. I can understand the video, capabilities. The original was used on quite a few different productions, as a backup camera, with the main issue being the rolling shutter. With the improved readout speed, I am hoping it will be much better. Certainly, I can see if being used on big productions. Fujifilm are claiming 14 stops dynamic range on video, which is up with the previous generation of Alexa, if I remember correctly. It is also interesting that Fujifilm are going to be releasing lenses designed for video to go with the GFX. The main thing I take away from my shot time with the camera, was that it felt like a much more professional high end camera than the 100s. It was as if they took all the best bits from the GFX100 and improved them, whilst getting rid of the horrible bottom grip.

Hugh, thanks for your thoughts at 13:54, a Leica SL3 with a phase detect AF would be awesome. Maybe with a similar stacked BSI sensor design like the Sony a1? As far as I know, Sony makes the Leica sensors anyway (Sony sensors but with Leica specs), please don’t hesitate to correct it if I’m wrong. I wished L-Mount Alliance or at least Leica comes with a lens like the Tamron 35-150 2.0-2.8 (available only for eMount and Z mount). If that would be an original Leica zoom delivering the Leica look like the 24-90 2.8-4.0, I would spend 5k immediately for that lens.

A 100s user here Hugh, so obviously desperate to own GFX100 the second ! Maybe, maybe not. The new video features are interesting, but I wonder what I am going to match the the undoubtably wonderful quality with in an edited video? For stills work, my main use, the extra processing speed would be so useful shooting multi shot panoramas. And better autofocus too. But...this type of camera is Soooo critical with focus that I use manual most of the time. And I'm so with you on the lack of 'D-ring' ....that omission should deserve a custodial sentence !!! And yes, the dire menu system. It looks ok, but could (should) have been so much better. Your sigh at the lack of D-ring and the menus, spoke volumes. Such a good video, well done. I doubt Hasselblad or Leica will be worried, Fuji probably makes the Hassies already, so they probably have an agreement to distance prices and features from eachother's cameras. Leica probably thinks they will sell their cameras regardless of Fuji undercutting them, heck im sure they probably think they can raise their prices even more, and their customers will be glad to pay more. 😄

Now from the 100 to the 100II? This is no upgrade nor a "new" camera.. it's called a REVISION no matter how it's sold as or marketed.

if the reviews of the new hasselblad is true and i cant agree with total confidence with the people's preference to "better color" when it seems subjective or just editable anyways. Hasselblad as felt fuji's pressure and updated their camera to have IBIS and credit they keep their camera very compact, added they updated their lens to be faster and also compact - added its leaf shutter. and so credit to fujifilm for making medium format more affordable and pushing the market to improve with competition. them moving to movies is an interesting choice as well. Where Hasselblad is designed to still focus on photos even though if i remember has some video features - fuji just speeds forward with cinematic video features.

the day Fujifilm offers the same elegance of tone and colour that Hasselblad does, I might consider it. But for the moment it is just yet another Japanese tech-camera. When I turn on my old X1D I have to wait a good 7-8 seconds before I can shoot, but there are no miracles when every time I turn on the camera it has to read a calibration file (specific and different for every single camera) of no less than 32 GB saved in a specific internal memory. But the results are then obvious. The Hasselblad raw "receipe" is simply another level, even if the sensor are exactly the same.

I agree that Hasselblad’s color science is the best in the business.

That is one hideous looking camera (IMHO). After having had the GFX 100S, the SL2, IQ4150 and tons of other cameras, I have settled on the X2D and Q3 for their simplicity of use, beautiful design and fantastic file quality. I do wish Hasselblad would release a tilt shift lens like Fuji just did, however (but it seems very unlikely). So I got a Sony A7RV to use with my Canon TS lenses, and the wonderful Sony 12-24mm f/2.8 for super wide angle shooting. Would love to be able to use just one system but so far nobody does it all! Thanks for the video!

@@MichaelLaing71 i guess big is subjective? Compared to the current 50, vs the 80.... but looking at some of the Z mount 50s.... I have to say you're right.... it really isn't that big.

Fuji 'destroyed' a lot of good will when they released the S version of the GFX100 (at half the price) and introduced their 6 monthly discount lens nonsense into the GFX lens line up as well. They effectively burned a lot of high end users of their system - people with very long memories. The XPro3 is another indicator of just how out of touch they are with photographers as opposed to 'hipsters' fancy presenting people with a flip screen that is useless and trying to sell that as a for 'serious' photographers who dont pixel peep nonsense - matched to a viewfinder which is just rubbish - it seems that teh whole Fuji product is some weird blend of good engineering, mixed up with cray market research and ridiculous periodic discounting of product -weird company - Ive put them inteh too hard basket and exited - and will never ever look back - ever. Leica makes it much easier and respects its user base much much more. Hasselblad - yeah naaah...Ive tried to make the X system work for me - because in hand it is such a beautiful thing - like all Leica cameras - a joy to hild - but a focusing system that doesn't work and a lens line up that is uber expensive and ill matched to body size - but the files are just fantastic- the only company that seriously challenges Leica (IMO) for IQ. Hasselblad are a 'nearly there if not for, this that, and ten other things " proposition - the last thing is - they arent Hasselblad anyway - they are DJI.

Fuji has no equals if one is talking about image quality. Their APC (nearly) beats the others full frame offerings and their medium format is far cheaper than the competition. It competes with the high pixel full frame cameras of the others, the body size is not very much different and beats them easily with better IQ.

thank you for the presentation - some wonderful photos during the intro.. but that's not the point: you promised a kind of comparison between Fuji, HaBla Leica.. this happens much too late at the near end of the video.. and I couldn't disagree much more with your appraisal of the so called "industrial design" of H and L: its ugly, way too clean to be used in praxis, their monitor controlled menu is a ind of "Misuse-Kino" (Mouse cinema), not very intutitive.. beside the fact, that both competitors are way too expensive in their price performance ration.. why don't you compare "the colors" and images of the three candidates directly... you leave me very unsatisfied with the feeling that you actually did not want to hurt anyone... at the end all is a huge grey zone without remarkable hints to make a concrete decision; if anything goes nothing happens ... the most positive effect of your vies talk is: I will stay with my GFX 100s - also because it is more compact and low profile style, and I don't use the overxpensive foldable EVF - I simply put a Goldmann loop one the tillable integrated display and have a much more immersive look through it. so easy and direct ...

To be honest, I’m a bit disappointed. Not about the GFX100II or the new lenses. These are probably very good cameras/lenses just like the original and the S, although for my work (fashion/beauty) I prefer and use the X2D. For personal work I’ve used Fuji on and off since 2012. For me the Fuji sweet spot is small, easy to carry cameras with traditional film-style controls, a great choice of lenses offering seriously good image quality at an affordable price. There lies my disappointment. The past few years Fuji seems to focus on being like others. With the exception of the X-T5 all new introduced cameras are PASM models and bigger, heavier and more expensive than their predecessors. This also goes for many of the newer lenses, with the silly 50/f1.0 as the pinnacle. All this while their signature cameras and lenses are long-term unavailable and/or in need of updating (X-PRO3, X100V, X-E4, X-T30II, XF18/f2, XF14/f2.8, XF18-55, XF50-140…). I really hope the next X-Summit will be around their sweet spot cameras and lenses.

Hasseblad should be worried. Not Leica. Leica is known for manual control, build quality, minimalism, lens quality especially and of course the images have a certain Leica look. They are truly niche
