This and the branch in Edinburgh used to be absolutely fantastic, the Covid pandemic and the push for outdoor dining made the place a fortune. Since then both places have let it go to there head and the prices have went through the roof and the quality has sunk. There is much better options now. Black pudding and haggis can lift a breakfast stratospherically. I’m not a fan of maple bacon - I’d rather add a touch of HP to smoked bacon than have my bacon maple flavoured. But, if I have to eat streaky bacon (not much alternative here in the USA) I liked it cooked exactly as you like it - I do get frustrated here as it is usually burnt and people pick it up with fingers in order to eat it. Scotland has such good quality meat products it was disappointing to see poor sausages - whatever shape! It never dawned on me that the beans being in a ramekin is such a good idea - great advice. Great review as always.

To pair catering sausages with quality black pudding and haggis is a false economy. As you said, the sausage makes the breakfast. It all looked a bit overcooked, to me. There is a local fish & chip shop in my area. It is very average with everything frozen and it has that real frozen and foul oil taste. People get caught up with the "Beatles" music playing and the UK theme (I am in Australia) and they think it is wonderful authentic fish and chips and the reviews are outstanding. There is absolutely nothing British about the place and it is just frozen rubbish thrown in to a fryer. However, it gets great reviews and people make day trips to visit it.

I really query people who don't like mushrooms. The only plausible explanation is that the ones they've had are not cooked properly, which is a shame. The red flag for me is when I hear "I like the taste but not the texture" That's a cooking thing. The rookie mistake with mushrooms is not knowing they have a huge amount of water in them and washing them in water just makes it worse because they're also very hydroscopic. Not knowing this can mean they come out slimy, which even I don't like.

I think the Hash brown, egg and beans were the only edible food stuffs there, along with the toast...my opinion. Tea/coffee should ALWAYS be included in a brekky, as should the toast AND £3 for one teabag??😱😱😱 They're having a laugh aren't they???? 😳😳 It was a lot of money for not the best food. As a Canadian, my dad taught me two lessons that were my favorites: "don't start a fight but finish them" and "don't order fish in a steakhouse or vice versa". Now, I actually find your review MORE interesting that you tried a perhaps "secondary" item outside the specialty of this Canadian restaurant and I hope to see more! But, as a rule for when one goes out for a great meal themselves, stick with the specialties of the particular restaurant is a good rule of thumb.

That breakfast wasn’t a Scottish breakfast that I recognise. Steak lorne sausage, beef links, fruit pudding, black pudding, back bacon, eggs, maybe haggis (but it wasn’t ever put on a breakfast in our house it was served with neeps and totties). Beans and tomato optional. That streaky bacon isn’t a Scottish breakfast item, back bacon Ayrshire ham. Also the bread was just regular bread, what about a plain loaf or lovely Scottish rolls.

My dad loved beans but would never ever have them for breakfast he called them a plate filler.... We'd have 2-3 steak Lorne, 2 rashers of back bacon, black pudding, fruit pudding, tattie scone, fried egg and fried bread and that was you to dinner time on a Saturday as you were stuffed.

Hi Gary, I’m from Canada. I am not being disrespectful, but… I don’t eat that for breakfast. It didn’t look to good. The blood sausage sounded very interesting, but the taste of beans in every bite would be off putting to me. It looks like such a beautiful place to visit. I’ve heard wonderful things about the people there. Try, eggs Benedict with pea meal, smoked ham or blood sausage and spinach on an English muffin. Homemade hollandaise, is sooo good. Cheer. 🍻

Hello Gary: Based on your reactions to this meal and the individual contents, I think it would be safe to say that you probably would NOT like most of the breakfast sausage served here in the USA. What we have here is mainly mass-produced without the herbs and seasonings you are accustomed to. There is an English purveyor of the types of goods you are accustomed to located in the Chicago, Illinois area called JOLLY POSH FOODS and I and a British co-worker ordered from him. We ordered back bacon, mix for Yorkshire pudding, cippolata sausages, regular pork sausages and I think, if you lived in the USA, his products would be to your liking. Cheers, Paul Connors New Jersey, USA

I know I know TSB was your second choice - still! My usual pet hates - Should be a POT of tea fgs !! HB’s shouldn’t be there M’rms should! BB’s & toast shouldn’t be on the same plate! I hate that 😑 Very average cooking & quality & finally everything just chucked on the plate You’d’ve got a better breakfast just randomly knocking on any wee Scottish wifey’s front door! 4 out of 10 for me. Far as reviews go - Depends what the reviewers benchmark is 😑 Hope you’re enjoying yourselves 🌞😊

If I want a good Scottish Breakfast, I'd make it myself. That way I can choose where I get my starring parts. Good potato Scones are essential as are your sausages, especially Lorne (go for steak Lorne if you can). Black pudding can be really dry and not very tasty - choose a good local butcher's own, or some Stornoway. Bacon - ideally Ayrshire middle if you can get it, otherwise some good Scottish Back Bacon - unsmoked for me, but some will prefer the smoked version. Don't forget the eggs. As a veteran Scottish Breakfast eater from the early 60's on, baked beans and mushrooms were never there. I love them both, but they spoil a breakfast for me. As for the hash brown? What's that doing there. One ingredient I have always had, and found in some hotels in Scotland as well, is plum tomatoes. This makes it for me, but like with the alien beans, make a barrier from the egg(s).

I don't mind food be served in skillets as they keep temperature for a while- a pet hate of mine is cold food. You have to very careful though not to overheat them so something like 40/50C is ideal but it depends on the meal and frankly who's eating it as some people just seem to be used to cooler food, parents mainly from our locale and that's understandable.

Hi Gary, that's a Scottish breakfast I would have been tempted to complain about, but you can't complain about the breakfast looking like a crash site. Thank you for taking one for the team and have an absolutely wonderful rest of your day and speak to you soon. Email incoming tomorrow.

Hi Gary. Thanks for the review. Ordering Full Scottish breakfast at what says is a Canadian Diner is strange. I'm a Canadian born in Montreal now living past Toronto and other than having Poutine on the menu and Maple Leafs everywhere I'm not sure how this is a Canadian Diner. More of an international diner with Argentinian Skillet and Steak Salad, Mexi Skillet, New York Rueben, Tijuana and Kansas Dogs, etc. on the menu. Montreal Rueben would have been more accurate and there's really no such sandwich in Montreal as the Cheese Sandwich (Philly style). Where are the classic Canadian dishes like Montreal Smoked Meat or Peameal Bacon sandwiches. How about Tourtiere pie, Atlantic Cod or Nova Scotia lobster roll? Hopefully the next Canadian Diner you try out has more actual Canadian dishes on it.
