Im currently on the waitlist for PTA school, but i have what i believe to be a conflict. I believe i have neuroplastic pain. However I know in order to recover from neuroplastic pain i have to believe i dont have structural problems. How can I marry physical therapy to alan gordons thoughts on neuroplasticity? Im scared that going to school will reinforce my old beliefs of structural problems for chronic pain. I dont want to switch career paths after all the hard work i put in so im hoping you could clear things up about how PT can be helpful with these kinds of patients. I absolutely believe PT will help with structural damage and will better movement quality. However I do think a large portion of my future patients will be experiencing neuroplastic pain, and i just don’t understand how PT and neuroplastic pain work together. Thank you for your time

so how do you rule out cervical stenosis in neck? I have had it for years but my neck only started hurting when my anxiety came! i will not get surgery that will make me worse! so can i still heal from anxiety if i have stenosis?

@@Terriloo1 im not sure if if you meant to respond to my comment, but from what it sounds like i believe you can heal. That being said i am not a doctor nor am I familiar with your diagnosis. If you have not read “the way out” by alan gordon i highly recommend it. It is not the first book that introduced me to the idea of neuroplastic pain however it has definitely helped me the most. I went from unemployed applying to disability and extremely depressed to being about 80% pain free and I truly believe with more work i can get pain free. The biggest thing you need to do is reduce the fear around your pain. When you catch a negative thought replace it with a positive thought. Work on Loving yourself and send yourself messages of safety. Lastly try to not be overly critical of yourself and be less perfectionistic. Its a lot of work. I was stuck in debilitating pain for 6 years and now i feel so free. Also even if your pain is legitimately structurally caused I still believe you can at least lower the amount of pain you feel. If you need a community try joining curable on facebook. I ask questions there from time to time and it helps me a lot.

I don’t get on here too often to comment as my schedule is so busy, but I would say that we need more physical therapists and physical therapy assistants that understand this. you are well-positioned to bring the neuroplastic aspect into a physical therapy approach. I think you can easily marry the two together.
