The Darkness was finally a way for Garth Ennis to express his loathing for "superheroes" in a way that resulted in a fun narrative. It was refreshing. Normally, when Ennis does supers I end up rolling my eyes so hard I sprain something.

Jackie Estacado is legit my second favorite (Batman #1) comic character ever. I am super excited for the reboot. The new Witchblade has been really good so far so that bodes well. Marc Silvestri is writing the new Darkness series, which is cool, and Marc casually let it slip who is penciling the book (I haven't seen it anywhere else, so I won't say it here), which also has me excited. Im so glad youre talking about the darkness! I was introduced by the 2nd game which i still love. One of the biggest problems with the comic series is that a lot of it is kind of aimless and jackie himself dips in and out of actually being a character as opposed to just a cool mafia guy who fights bad guys because he needs to be the good guy for the comics. But there are some MAJOR highlights in the series, some of my favorites being this first arc and the first arc of the 3rd series, accursed.

It's interesting just how much of an outlier the first Darkness game is compared to the comics and second game. I came across the Darkness and Witchblade around the same time and loved the fact that they were (at least tried to be) parallel stories. Where I live I got issue one and two at the same time so I guess the story was a bit more cohesive. I remember those days fondly. It felt like comics were growing up and I was growing up with them. Darker themes, more 2grown up" content, edgy. Those were the days.

"The Darkness" 90ed 90's comics as hard as Miami Vice 80ed the 80's. (and I can't help but hear "The Sickness" in my head ... I know it's the wrong word, but the music fits the visual tone of the comic more than "I Believe In A Thing Called Love," so it's like a subconscious association)

I read the ultimate collection of the darkness sometime ago. I would have got the first compendium, but after reading the entire first witchblade compendium, I figured that was a terrible idea. I think the original Garth Ennis mini run was peak 90s/Dark Age everything, and didn't reward or punish the main character too much; and I think other arc by what's-his-name, where his uncle kills his girlfriend, and he has to go back and tear everything up was peak antihero punishment/attempted redemption. I don't think I could read too much of that character and still like him though.

@@CasuallyComics I'll definitely be watching your review on that. 90s edge is something that died a long time ago, and is antithetical to puritanical postmodern sensibilities; so it'll be interesting to see how far they can go with that, how much they'll have to compromise, and what they'll have to do to make it compatible with current readership.
