Lyle is so awesome. He makes everything make sense. Common sense. I see so many overweight people beating themselves up on cardio machines and (even worse) seeing trainers beat them with exercise too much whereas they never lose weight. I want to talk to them and show them how it’s the other 23 hours of the day that count the most. Maybe I should become a trainer or e coach because it really gets to me how much more progress they could make if they had people like you guys at revive or Lyle to help them. On a personal note, I grew up overweight so I have that humble beginning which helps me understand the sedentary person. It’s true that a lot of hardcore fitness always people may not be the best match to help the really overweight folks. Great discussion as always, gents!!

Fantastic stuff. I just came off a mini cut which I did perfectly strictly and I spent two weeks after its end completely out of control, eating everything I saw. This time around I'm being much more flexible and am not suffering to nearly the same extent. Psychology is something that so many people (myself included) ignore when dieting but ultimately it's the single biggest factor in a diet's success.

I vehemently disagree on the effects of having a six pack / fit body on quality of life and success with women in particular. I have been both, very chubby (skinny fat with 25ish or even higher BF%) and pretty ripped (~ 10% bodyfat with clearly defined abs even when not flexing or in bad light). The difference in how basically everyone around treats you was stunning. You get much more smiles, looks, "offers of conversation" etc. from just about everyone. Heck, even my father looks at me with a special sense of pride when I look my best. Personally, I think my face makes the biggest difference. I have a pretty decent bone structure in terms of facial width, but I have not a very prominent chin and i store a lot of fat in my face. So when I get to the stage of body fat in which my face leans out, it's like i'm a completely different person. People with a narrow face and less facial fat to begin with might simply look gaunt at 10% and have a completely different experience. Anyways. You can dress much better (slim suits etc. - hey, i'm from Europe) and that is what really gets the attention of women who are beyond the teeny six pack stage. A man with a chiseled face in a perfectly fitting suit compared to a chubby guy in a suit that is barely hiding his love handles (love handles are my other big weakness). Additionally, we're living in the age of online dating / online hook-ups. If you can throw in a pic that resembles the style and aesthetics of a Calvin Klein underwear model and you have a nice face, the amount of pussy you can get skyrockets. Of course, that kind of lifestyle is in itself as shallow as being obsessed with abs and it's also an addictive search for the next kick once you're "hooked" to the hook ups... but it's clearly something that is unavailable to the average looking dude. That being said: in a casual Bar setting amongst friends, I'm far too nerdy and socially awkward to compete with a lot of charming and naturally socially adapt guys. Guess where my nickname comes from. So I'm not claiming that looking good naked or in clothes will totally off-set everything else or be the best strategy to have social success overall. But if you, say (like me), happen to live near the beach and use Tinder or similar apps... boy does it make a difference. Finally, once you realize that women or people do treat and regard you differently, your entire attitude towards social interactions changes. Once you realize that the women YOU are attracted to are keeping eye-contact etc., you realize that all you have to do is not screw up. You don't have to QUALIFY yourself anymore, you simply don't have to DISQUALIFY yourself anymore. That changes the entire dynamic of how you approach women. But even how you approach, say, some staff in a shop. Suits have the same effect in that regard. If a store owner assesses you as a solvent customer, he will go out of his way to be nice and help you out etc.

Totally agree! I'm 31 and have been 30-50+ pounds overweight since my late teens. NOONE ever told me I was fat or needed to lose weight. But recently I dropped a lot of weight and got down to 10% body fat. Hot women started to hit on me. That in turn boosted my confidence and I can hit on women more easily. Back when I was 22% body fat I was really into "game" and I would hit on chicks and make a fool out of myself. Now I don't even need game.

Damn, where do you live? I have the exact opposite. The leaner I get and more chiseled my jawline i can't get a tinder match or date to save my life! I'm in Chicago though where everyone is average and women love the pudgy hipsters.

Excellent stuff right here. I would love for you to tackle the topic of set(tling) points in the future. You briefly talked about this in a way when Lyle mentioned dieting down from higher bodyfat percentages in stages instead of all the way from 30 to 10% as a male, but I feel it's one of the least understood and discussed subjects in fitness and dieting.

I love Lyle's work. One thing he pointed out is that when people eat, they seem to get hungrier than if they are just NOT eating and he seems to think this is contradictory. And I get that, at first it seems contradictory, but it really isn't. We are designed for feast and famine. It is an evolutionary advantage to eat more when food is available. People who don't have the "eat more signal" when food is available will be in trouble when famine comes...
@ReviveStronger5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely what I experience and have seen with many clients. That's why I'm not the biggest fan of refeeds tbh - Pascal
@jeffeklund22245 жыл бұрын
@@ReviveStronger I like refeeds in the right setting - they have a lot of benefits. Part of the problem is that if someone is dieting intensely and doing a lot of exercise, then leptin levels are elevated and a refeed can really trigger someone. The refeed has to be planned and not over-the-top. It should also keep fats to a reasonable level - the combination of fats and carbs really sets off the "feast" signaling. Finally, refeeds should be used to keep your diet from getting to the point where you're "primed" to go off the rails. I also don't know if a refeed for someone over, say, 15% bodyfat is really beneficial.

Well, I better stop repeating the one or two day refeed thing. That's disappointing. That said, there are the benefits Lyle mentioned, and personally, I felt less deprived when I did a one day refeed each week. It seems the benefits have to be weighed individually when it comes to the psychological aspect. I always appreciate Lyle's contributions on these issues. I'm glad I've seen this and have now further added to my knowledge of dieting.

In the podcast 040 with Mike Israetel, you mentioned in your first contest there was a guy that dieted down straight from obesity do you know if he maintained or went back to obese?
@NinaT9406 жыл бұрын
Ahhh thank you! Someone who finally came out and called IF for what for many of us it can be...a binge purge. It is touted lately as the Holy Grail and I have beaten myself up for, after a year of it, returning to a balanced roughly 6 meals a day. But the results for me have been a game changer. On IF I was lean alright (Skinny fat) I felt constantly bloated and it actually was physically uncomfortable to get my maintenance calories in, I am sure I was nutrient deficient. A regular eating pattern with a good macro balance and a solid weight training program has improved my physique and energy levels. I still like to do fasted training some early mornings but there is no ‘window of eating’ just good old train then eat approach.
