Clarification for the black serpent. Daphne didn’t just make the beasts to satiate herself, she made them to feed eveyone in the world. Here’s the twisted reasoning for the black serpent: if there’s less people in the world, that means everyone else gets more food. Yup, she was a bit off her rocker haha

The Authorities naturally drive their users crazy, especially the more their users rely on them, to the point their reasoning becomes less and less human and more just an excuse to keep relying on those Authorities for everything. They're like Rings of Power. Gandalf rebukes and refuses taking the One Ring from Frodo in the Lord of the Rings explaining that he would TRY to use it for good, but through him, it would wield a power over him that would ensure only evil ends would result. Just as it took the fragile good intentions of its wielder and twists them to fit the will of its dark lord, so too do the Authorities twist their wielders for themselves.

Three things you forgot to mention 1. The witch cult doesn't just ignore the other witches, it's trying to erase their legacy. This is the reason why in early arcs Subaru is taught that Satella killed the rest of the witches and so the term "witch" only ever refers to her, why nobody questions statements like "The witch created mabeasts", and why the witch cult's demands were what they were when raiding Priestella and Garkla. 2. Echidna's hunt for knowledge was fueled by her desire to save the world before she completely turned into a psychopath, and her plan is likely still in motion considering how most of the story is shaped through her creations and students. 3. It's not 100% required to be compatible with a witch factor if you force it like Petelgeuse did (Petelgeuse is not compatible with Sloth), however, the penalty for forcing it is psychological pain comparable to something eating away at your very soul, part of the reason why Petelgeuse went insane and the reason Subaru only uses it in critical situations.

Echidna's story breaks my heart. You can see how much her Authority tormented her when she was a child, how she could feel the pain and suffering of every being and wanted so desperately to save them. It probably would have horrified her to see the woman she would end up becoming, and yet how could it have ended any other way? It's a perfect display of how these Authorities warp and break the minds of their wielders the more they rely on their dark powers. However, I do have to cast doubt on the idea that she was a psychopath by the end. I think a part of her was, but there are moments where you can see the wounded woman underneath that perhaps has always been there, hidden under the deranged, greed-obsessed lunatic she's become. And you see that in many different versions of her. In the sanctuary where she is so emotionally affected by Emilia's trials. That same version of her in the WN, after Subaru leaves his last tea party with all the witches, where we see a woman who can't tell if the other witches with her are really them or just illusions she created out of loneliness based on the fond memories she had of them. How she's not even sure if she truly was trying to get Subaru to make a contract with her or if she let him see the darker part of herself on purpose so he'd reject her. Then there's the woman Beatrice and Roswaal knew who doesn't seem wholly without empathy in spite of all the terrible things she does, even to them. There's elements within scenes of the anime and in the WN where we see glimpses that maybe she truly did love them and had not wished for what would happen to them later. It feels like despite how much her Greed has consumed her, there is still small human part of herself within, a shred of the empathetic woman underneath who had too much love to give. But we'll never wholly know that woman because of how far gone she is, though I suspect that's the point of the Scarfdona spirit, for that version of her that guards Anastasia is the only one without the taint of the Authority of Greed within her.

Pretty sure the 'Tome of Wisdom' is her authority; she didn't create it. From what I remember it manifests as the true Tome of Wisdom which is a book that contains all knowledge, but she simply rarely uses it because she prefers finding answers for herself. So the order is: Tome of Wisdom (Echidna) > Perfect Gospels (Roswaal and Betty) > the Gospels (Witch Cult) Granted I'm a WN reader so some of this may have been retconned in the LN.

So she created a downgraded copy that regular people can read, that one was in Roswaal's possession. As for Beatrice's book, I'm not even sure if it actually worked, since the pages were all blank...

The reason there isn't any ReZero content on KZbin is because 4 years ago, Kadokawa suddenly copystruck almost all of the big ReZero channels and took most of them down. They are still very strict about it. Just be careful and avoid showing anime clips. I'm glad to see it get some more love though! I hope to see more!

Daphne, the witch of gluttony, is not evil. She created the three great mabeasts in order to solve world hunger, the great rabbit which can multiply itself infinitely so it'll never run out, the white whale for its incredible size, and the black serpent for population control that way there would always be enough food. The great mabeasts are calamities because daphne gave them the capability to defend themselves, even if they were created with the intent to be eaten. Echidna, (or at least the Echidna within the castle of dreams) is much more evil, because she intentionally tried manipulating Subaru into a contract that would ruin his life. All of the witches are described as Subaru by being "incomprehensible", and for good reason. Not a single one of them are purely evil, but they commit unbelievable atrocities without a second thought.

One of the things Re:Zero shows is how insidious and destructive these Authorities truly are. They really are powers best left alone for how much damage they do, to where they can take even the more innocent and pure intentions of their wielders and twist them to fulfill their own needs (and it does feel like the Authorities have a will of their own, one that seeks destruction above all else). The more those wielders are tempted by and rely upon the power these Authorities provide to solve their problems, the more that power takes over until there's little left of the person you started with. Daphne wanted to solve world hunger with her Authority of Gluttony. The result was the creation of three great monsters that would consume all of humanity among them. Two of them were made with the justification that their size or number could in turn feed the world if the world could kill them, but if not, well its the nature of all things to eat or be eaten so cycle of life haha. And the last would wipe the slate clean all together because if there are no beings that hunger, then the problem is solved! Can't hunger if you're dead. Typhon wanted to use the Authority of Pride to make a just world. So her solution was to examine the guilt in man's heart and judge the guilty based on that. Only, it's the nature of conscienable beings to make mistakes and harbor regrets, even for things for which they are blameless. We're imperfect after all. The only ones who don't are, ironically enough, the psychopaths. But in her ideal world, only the psychopaths would survive. And so she judged and judged, leaving nothing but barren wastelands and corpses in her wake. Minerva wanted to use her Authority of Wrath to get back at a cruel, uncaring world where people suffered by healing them. She healed and restored everywhere she went, to anyone who needed it. Only her healing caused significant disaster and calamity elsewhere to the point she had to be killed to save the world, for she would not stop healing those around her even if she knew the end result and knew it would mean complete and total self-destruction. Echidna was very similar to Minerva and desired a world without suffering. Her Authority of Greed ensured she knew the thoughts and feelings of all beings and as such knew their pain. And yet she never had the knowledge to fix it, to make the pain stop. It made her despair and weep, and the only thing she could think to do was rely on her Authority in her quest for knowledge to finally find the solution that would solve it all and end suffering for all time. The end result led to her causing more misery and pain than she ever could have imagined to everyone around her, her noble heroic cause twisted until her bottomless greed for knowledge was all that was left. These four witches started on noble grounds, with the best of intentions. There's even side stories you can read of their early lives where you can see how human some of them were (especially Echidna), how much they cared for those around them, how tormented they were by the Authorities they held within them. But in the end, it didn't matter, and you see the insane raving lunatics they became who had to be stopped by any means for the sake of the world they wished to save. For all their power and beauty, they were no different than the Archbishops.
