Even that was just a stream highlight and to add on top RyuK is probably the least known player in the top 5 for newer players. Ok, this one is gonna be a doozy cuz frankly, I suck at explaining. Most Rhythm Games with level editors eventually fall on the "Expert Only" trap, where people mostly create levels oriented for high level skill play. Eventually, making a game purely oriented on EXPERT custom levels can reach to be intimidating or hard to get into for new players. I personally believe that if people would still take the time to create new charts on lower difficulties (Easy/Normal/Hard and NOT just an Expert Difficulty), it would go a long way on attracting new players on those kinds of games, making em more accessible and enjoyable for those who's skill level still isn't that high yet. Btw, I'm not saying that "Levels with just an Expert Difficulty are bad", those are fine when they are made ocassionally. I only believe they are bad and damage the attraction of new players when there is nothing but those on the "new custom songs " pages/list.
@sintheemptyone81083 жыл бұрын
I kinda just make the charts I play in SM 5.1, so haven't really run into that issue myself. Still, I can imagine trying to jump into a game with level editors that doesn't have options for lower difficulty levels to be a frustrating experience. The amount of difficulty I will have kinda depends on how much punishment I'm willing to take, and the amount of fun on how good I become at the art of charting the songs I want to play.
@joao343863 жыл бұрын
I personally find it surprisingly difficult to make a chart easier than the level I'd play at. It's a weird sort of reverse difficulty where I don't know what makes an easy chart fun or engaging, so I end up screwing up the design and making it either feel janky or dull to play. I'm not sure if that's a common impression, but it might be why some people only chart stuff exclusively around their active skill level. I guess one way to counteract that is to seek out novice players for playtesting, but it's not easy to round up a gang of playtesters.

from personal experience and from what I've collected here's a bit of a summary of said stuff: - play consistently. daily 30min-2hr sessions as opposed to a super long session once a week and not playing other days. - if you main a lower keycount, try to dedicate certain days to just playing 7k. As opposed to slowly going up the keys, it's actually better to just jump right into 7k or dare i say, 9k. It's a lot easier to "go down" than it is to "go up" in keycount. - diversify with the notecharts you play. Just playing a limited set of charts provides less room to learn and develop muscle memory. If there's a lack of selection, random works great. The usual 7k threads i see lean more towards "play these types of charts" or "try to download a lot of packs" in combination with the first two points i listed.

Hot take: The rhythm game genre will never grow, because developers and the community are too scared to move from/change the basic formula. From a general standpoint, rhythm games are literally a half-step above sports games when it comes to creating an appeal to play newer versions/modes. Osumania! and Etterna are especially victims of this process, as they are simply ports of Dance Dance Revolution that only are only different through changes and reskins. Arguably, you gain access to things like 4k, 7k, and some additional modifications, which help spice up gameplay for players within the community. That said, from an outside view, these changes appear to simply be changes in speed and difficulty (I mean that really is what they are in the end) to the average non-rhythm game player. Things such as spinning notes may be seen as an interesting challenge to rhythm game players, but will ultimately seem like a simple sprite change to lazily increase difficulty by those outside of the community. Basically, rhythm games are only going to appeal to those that know what is going on, while boring/scaring off those who don't. On the other hand, having games like Friday Night Funkin' and Guitar Hero are good examples of how the genre can move past such a fault. The base game of Friday Night Funkin' is by no means a rhythm game that should be placed on a pedestal for it's rhythm game gameplay, but it should most certainly be viewed as a step in the right direction for attracting outside players. Having additional appeals like original characters, art, occasional story/purpose, and songs are just what rhythm games could use. While the early stages of mods (Whitty's old Ballistic) made the future seem grim, mod creators have shown genuine effort in improving their abilities to chart maps. Guitar Hero has the effect of being played on a guitar to increase its appeal, as well as a slight background story and additional visuals to give the game more depth. Heck, if rhythm games strayed from their arcade-like mindset of "I play this game to get the highest score", then the genre would most likely see some serious growth. Sorry for typing up more than the average person might want to read, but thank you to anyone that actually took the time to read this. Obviously, disagree or agree as you see fit, as I want to respond and correctly grow my opinion on the matter. I feel inclined to say that I am biased to paint Friday Night Funkin' in a positive light, as it got me back into playing Guitar Hero and trying out Etterna, so feel free to use such information in any arguments/contribution you may have.

Please read my edit to this. I agree, for example rhythm games with a lot of "style" are more popular. FNF, rythym doctor,, and even osu look more unique then a lot of other rhythm games, making them look more appealing for players. Edit: ok so since this comment, I have played rhythm games for over 200 hours, such as quaver and pulsus, know how to chart songs, and can beat 15-18 difficulty maps and can safely say that I do agree with this somewhat. Attracting new players is something that rhythm games struggle with yes, but I disagree with a lot of the first paragraph. 4k, 5k, 6k 7k, 8k, 9k, Scroll Velocities, accuracy changes, modcharts, and more aren't just "artificial difficulty" and anyone who has seen an actual rhythm game play for more than 20 minutes should be able to understand that. Playing Guitar Hero with a guitar can pretty much be labeled the same way as 7k by that logic. And I didn't even mention Taiko or CtB or even original osu! in this. Sure FNF mods have mechanics, without that I wouldnt even be playing at this point, but FNF mechanics and different game modes and modifiers in osu! and quaver are not more or less unique then one another. And there are so many other rhythm games out there, Pulsus (like i mentioned earlier) Is a BROWSER rhythm game that uses your NUMPAD, which everyone understands so its very easy to get into. ADOFAI uses only 1 key and has a super unique feel to it. And even more I haven't even mentioned here. I understand they dont appeal well to outsiders, but that doesn't diminish their quality in the slightest.
@Cherri01773 жыл бұрын

I think the way dj max does it in a pretty good and fair way, it is like this. There is the fever gauge, every time you hit a note perfectly it fills the bar, when you fill the bar you can activate it to get a score multiplier (you can make the activation automatic too), that multiplier stays on during sometime, misses don't end it, if you activate it a again while the the first one is active you get a even bigger multiplier (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x). There was also the way trilogy made it. Instead of making the multiplier stay only for a period of time now there is a second bar which denotes how much fever you have, it drain a bit with every note hit and drains by A LOT with non perfect notes. So in both cases, if you are being really accurate you can still keep your multiplier even if you miss

5:43 your take on this is spot on. I've been playing Guitar Hero/Clone Hero for a combined time of near 14 years, and I started when I was 15. The best players currently playing these games are certainly on the younger side; There are players who are doing things I could only dream of that are only a few years older than the amount of years i've been playing. Sure, i've got some decent enough FC's even for today, but with modern methods having been developed, the CH engine as a whole, hardware improvements.....I could go on, but the point is, newer/up and coming players have so much at their disposal, along with having developing brains, that us older players just...can't keep up, and that's okay! We're still around and enjoy playing, but it's a young person's game, and there's no reason to think that on the whole it won't always be that way.

RE comments starting around 9:36 - I think this is a fair criticism for ITG, but its too general. With respect to game setup/install/interface options, I could see an argument to be made for ITG not being beginner friendly. The counter to this is that the communities (SN Discord) have entire sections dedicated for beginner questions to help people out. I could also see an argument if this comment is centered around the difficulty or learning curves associated with starting out in the FA community or Stamina community. There is some sort of expected baseline skillset for the content in these communities, this is around maybe 11's for stamina, and 7's for FA (what the heck would a "stamina 9" or an "FA 5" even look like? lol) I could see how beginner players may feel "on their own" until they can get up to these difficulties, however there are plenty of resources and packs available that cover these bases. Also probably 1/4 (?) of the content ranked on Groovestats is content in beginner ranges (9s or less). Similar comment to above, beginner players can integrate into the different discord communities pretty seamlessly at whatever difficulty they are at, or even access beginner resources outside of Discord if they so choose. I think the increasing growth rates of both the Stamina and FA communities is clear evidence we are getting better at addressing some of these issues 👍

I'm not sure I buy your case on the age point. Two facts came to mind that I would have liked to see addressed: 1) the fifteen year old from your example has far more free time to dedicate to the game than the 35 year old, on average. 2) concert pianists routinely perform incredibly challenging repertoire well into their forties and fifties. This is because even the most intense repertoire shouldn't be physically stressful: instead, a musician practices so as to play with ease. You may have come against this one with too much of a four key bias: not all key modes are as physically demanding, and not all styles of play are either. That being said, thank you for your work.
@EtienneYT3 жыл бұрын
Rhythm games require inherently explosive movements constantly, as opposed to strength which is what I think you're arguing, which in that case, I would agree. But explosivity is very crucial to a lot of movements in rhythm games, and that alone would decrease as people age (even as old as 30-35, which is where *peak* speed decreases) I'm entertaining the 15 to 35 year old scenario based off of them playing for the same amount of time under the same circumstances. A younger person is on average much faster, develops muscle faster, and is especially developing faster through other metrics (whether it's cognitively, puberty, etc).
@alesscif3 жыл бұрын
@@EtienneYT Thank you for the response. I have further thoughts: where are these 35 year olds with as much free time as they did at 15? We would expect the average 35 year old to have a job, possibly a family to take care of. Keeping this in mind, we would expect to see what we see even if physicality had absolutely nothing to do with it: 15 year olds spend more time on the game because they have more time to spend on the game. This means they will be over-represented as a demographic at all levels of play, but especially the top level. Important: this isn't to say physicality plays no role. But it is to say that we cannot appeal to empirical data on player age vs. performance (because there is hardly any that accounts for time spent) just like we can't appeal to data on player gender vs. performance in say chess (which is almost entirely explained by under-representation of one of the groups). On explosivity, I understand your point. It is still worth considering how the physical demands which are placed on a player should be expected to vary wildly based on keycount (as column count increases, physical demands are balanced against reading demands). So that 4key would in many cases constitute a particularly egregious case of physicality prevailing over reading.
@EtienneYT3 жыл бұрын
@@alesscif There are a lot more physical precedents you can take from sports compared to more neurological precedents imo. The main point I'm trying to argue in the video is that a younger person will almost always have a better chance at becoming better than someone 30-35. They just simply develop faster in almost ever facet and we can even lower the age a bit more if we really want to. The outcome would still be in favor of the younger individual due to stuff like neuroplasticity, muscle development, puberty, etc. But I definitely understand where you're coming from regarding a more practical standpoint. I'm moreso just entertaining hypotheticals haha.
@alesscif3 жыл бұрын
@@EtienneYT Entirely understandable. What I am suggesting is that, given enough data to be able to account for time spent, the gap may prove to be smaller than we think. From a practical point of view, separating ITG stamina into its own discipline makes sense. Stamina follows certain charting rules (streams as the main factor of difficulty, no crossovers or tough technical patterns) that allow players to utilize tools like minimized movement, sensitive pads and lower friction that would not be usable to the same extent in other playstyles. These stamina-exclusive tools are the foundation of a skillset that gives players access to a smooth spectrum of development across almost two dozen difficulty levels and speeds ranging from 8 to 20+ steps per second. Basically without separation, high-level stamina as we know it would not exist. Also I don't enjoy learning tech charts or grinding high scores, I just want to go fast and challenge my physical and mental endurance so that's what I do lol

Though I heard there are now pc versions of some of their arcade games but after you use up all you free credit you have to buy extra credits via paseli which a japan exclusive credit online system and only way to purchase credit is through paseli booths in arcades in japan. Idk whether this is hot, cold, or lukewarm but: I think sightreading is one of the coolest rhythm game related skills, and I think it should be emphasized more. Note shuffle features in CH for example facilitate this, with imperfections. As a CS sidenote, I think note shuffling algorithms are really cool (e.g. do you want to maintain pitch order? Invert it? Ignore it? Create an "automorphism" on the keys? Etc.) I imagine there could be super sick tournaments where top players compete to sightread charts that have never been seen before, and charted by veterans for the tournament in particular and in secret. Sounds like an opening for foul play but if its niche enough the motive will be low.

Regarding the take about ITG: SRPG has a pretty low entry level. I would argue that it's actually very beginner friendly, and that is intentional on Ian's part. I don't really follow ITG anymore, but last I checked the difficulty went down to 11, which is right around the point where you might consider branching out from very casual play. You're not going to qualify for ECS by playing 11s, but SRPG still provides you with a ton of content with a clear path for improvement, an incentive to boost skills at various speeds, competition with your friends, a way to track your progress, etc. It's exactly what a beginner to stamina *needs* IMO Also the sharp divide between stamina and FA isn't really new. The last time they tried to mix those skills in a tournament setting was like 7 years ago. It seems like I'm one of the few people that misses that, but it is what it is.
@EtienneYT3 жыл бұрын
11 is definitely not an entry-level difficulty for dance games imo. In the context of srpg, yes, but I guess I've also just accepted that stamina is practically its own game at this point, and I'm viewing ITG as if people play the game to play all sorts of skillsets. I think most of my views on ITG stem from me disagreeing with how it functions from a fundamental standpoint, so I guess that's where the argument practically ends right away lmao. I wish more people played the game for the vast amount of chart variety it has to offer, but I've come to realize that will probably never be the case for 99% of the players.
@zetorux3 жыл бұрын
I didn't mean entry-level to ITG as a whole, I meant entry-level to stamina. Although that bar is still low enough to pull interest from casual players. Keep in mind that reading stream patterns is initially MUCH easier to pick up than most other skills at the same difficulty level. You'd still obviously need to build familiarity with the game before jumping into it, but like, I'm sure that someone doing 8s could very reasonably start grinding SRPG (with lower rate mods at first) and end up with a handful of 1.0x+ passes on the 11s or higher. The event lasts for a few months and there are only so many stream patterns so you got plenty of time to build up that skill. Also, this is really just speculation, but I think it's a lot fewer than 99% of players who exclusively play stamina or FA. I know that at least when I played, most of the top stamina players had really good FA (when we wanted to, haha), even if we didn't normally publish that kind of content. But in general, I think it's natural that you'd play some of the FA/tech packs, whether it's out of curiosity, or because you hit a wall and want to focus on something else, or because you like the music, or because you just don't wanna play anything hard, etc. I know when I was taking a rest day or just didn't wanna get sweaty I always played tech charts. But I've been a bit less connected to the scene over the past 4 years so idk

I saw plenty of new people during ECFA and SRPG that I'd never ssen before start playing during those events. Things like Club Fantastic offering a plug and play easy install of stepmania with simply love also helps this temendously. Even though it is separated, most people seem to support the other aspects of the game that they might not play and plenty of people dabble in all aspects. Also regarding FA players playing a "different game", quads kinda felt like a baseline goal with a lot of top players so having smaller timing windows is something we've needed for a long time to get rid of that feeling.

Difficulty selection should be used for more than difficulty selection, primarily to make something feel more complete. For example, spread and index charting of equal difficulty. EDIT: Oooh, and another one. People talk about the game teaching new players, but where I think rhythm games are lacking with new players is more specifically in first impressions.

Honestly, playing osu messed up my view of charts and now I HAVE to hold a combo. It's really bad and I wish I started somewhere else because I'm not naturally a good combo player, I'll always choke at least one thing but my accuracy is pretty alright

I understand why arcade rhythm games don't have the full version of songs, it will be a longer line to play.
@Mao00393 жыл бұрын
Or be like project diva arcade where it still online and rarely updated but because it mostly dead :( there never a line and they don't mind about adding full songs anymore.

A lot of these aren't hot takes. Pretty much every single Bemani game player wants konmai to make the games more available in the US.

I'm a bemani boomer but I want as many people as possible to learn about and play their games. Round 1 is bringing a lot of these games to people but to newcomers they are very intimidating (besides DDR).

you guys should unironically stop shitting on osu because like at least half of the people interested in bemani games as a whole came from osu

Hot takes: 1. When you get stuck and not able to make a new high score on a chart/beatmap after hours/days of playing, just leave it there for a few days and do other things; When you get back to the chart/beatmap some time later, you'll happily find yourself break your record with only ~3 plays. 2. Japanese companies don't care the "playing rights" of players outside Japan: We always get the version that Japanese players played 0.5~1 year ago(for example, maimai Deluxe, or even longer like CHUNITHM SUPER STAR), some functions are removed(for example, maimai Deluxe again), some songs are revomed/hidden for no good reason(for example, maimai Deluxe again). 3. "When you're playing, stop thinking how your hands/fingures should move, just focus on the rhythm"

0:59 i dont think thoses limits are self imposed and are more meta imposed , since the difficulty system of osu forces one or two skillsets it forces players , if they want to be "good" they need to pick one of thoses two skills , so i think its more a problem on how difficulty and improvement is percived by osu ranking system, or at least i think its the root of this problem , osu devs should accept their mistake when they did their difficulty system and rework it completly

ngl the thing about being kicked out after failing a song makes sense in the arcades where there are other people, but if you're something in your house then it's just annoying cause the time to learn a segment or a song is just too long. It's gonna be brute force trial and error because you will fail a song, be kicked out do it again not make any progress at all because you just can't register the high speed notes within a split second and you're forced to either look it up or just continue with the easier songs also faster songs shouldn't be spam fest with no rhythm whatsoever just to make it artificially hard, like damn. Don't go mapping fast rock songs when you can't map shit
@paulsd92552 жыл бұрын
11:18 I think he might be coming from Guitar Hero and Rock Band, where it makes sense for the music to be affected by performance because the expert charts are 1:1 with a particular instrument whose multitrack can be silenced on miss (or modified with an effect when using Overdrive or in a solo). Simply cutting out a particular instrument on miss is sufficiently jarring to serve as a punishment for missing without being too off. It does complicate charting and is only something you can do with song masters (All of GH and most of RB) or heavy editing (especially in The Beatles Rock Band)

To add to 11:14 Hit sounding is why I like Musynx so much... It's under the sound enhancer option with the option to turn it off. I like how you can tell exactly when and how you're off beat right away and adjust accordingly mid-song.... rather than rely on the generic clap/pop sound in stepmania and all of its variations or wait until the score screen for vague info on where you fucked up. Makes grinding out a song much easier IMO. Just wish the charting for that game didn't rely on long sections of jacks for 1/4 of the songs and wish it supports customs.... because the way the majority of the songs were charted feels like stepmania on easy mode. Also, having 2 exacts is fucking confusing (dark blue and light blue)... makes getting used to the game annoying as hell. Hit sounding (that gives away your timing via sound) is cool to have but it is jarring if you're not used to it and should have an off button.
