Personally I felt quite good. For the first time since Revenge of The Sith I did care about what was going on. In The Force Awakens I didn’t because it was just the same as a new hope but with more superficial characters. But I was ready to forgive this movie as it leaded to The Last Jedi where all the characters grew somehow. But The Rise of Skywalker threw it all away and The Last Jedi is the only one of the sequel trilogy who tried to make things right by correcting JJ Abrams’ errors. Rogue One was okay as an action movie but the characters were very weakly defined.

Kevin turns and asks the camera guy, and then gives Bruce the answer. Bruce responds, "And why don't you know that?"

Kathleen Kennedy ruïned star wars. Johnson helped her with that. They both clearly know nothing about star wars and are just trying to push their own agenda with this franchise. George may not be the best director but he did understand star wars since he litterly invented it. The biggest mistake the fans made was making George believe he wasn't good enough for his own creation therefore pushing him to sell it to Disney. Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are in my opinion Star Wars last hope. Because without them Star Wars wouldn't be Star Wars anymore. But that's all my opinion ofcourse

It’s selfish to avoid a director a lot of Star Wars fans liked to stay away from Star Wars. If he wants to do an episode of Mandalorian, and you don’t want to watch it, fine, no one will force you. The fact is, as a film director, Rian Johnson has a lot of fan. He directed to great movies, like Looper and Knives Out, and two great episodes of Breaking Bad. He just released a movie you didn’t like, this doesn’t mean he has to stay away from Star Wars. The fans who liked his film deserve to get an episode of The Mandalorian directed by him. You don’t. Then don’t watch it and let us have our time of pleasure.

@jps6071
@jps6071 2 жыл бұрын
There are only two logical ways this scene should have ended. 1. Finn and Rose both die in the crash when she crashed her speeder into his. 2. The First Order soldiers - who were just getting orders to kill everyone a.k.a no prisoners - take one minute to open a lock on the battle-walkers and have a couple Stormtroopers shoot Rose and Finn, who are lying dazed and defenseless right next to them. And even if for some absurd reason they survive and the First Order just ignores them, they would STILL be dead, because they were good four or five KILOMETERS away from their base and Finn had to dragg a injured person behind him, through a SALT FIELD. By the time he managed to return the battle should be long over, with them being left behind on Krayt to be hunted down and killed by their enemies.

That wasn't only a Rian Johnson thing. JJ also didn't understand the friendship of the OT's main characters. Remember, after Han's death in The Force Awakens, Leia walked right past Chewie to hug Rey. That's what happens when you get writers and directors who don't understand the characters.

So, admitting one mistake doesn't excuse JJ's bad decisions or lead me to think that he's better than Rian Johnson. Those two should both stay far away from Star Wars. Heck, Rian only ruined one franchise (Star Wars), JJ ruined two (Star Trek and Star Wars) and is on his way to really screwing up the DCEU now by hiring an American-hating writer for the American character Superman.

You make some excellent points here. Most people aren't aware of what 'direction' or 'cinematography' actually mean. They think if there's a pretty image in a movie, that's good cinematography. It's actually defined as the art of telling a story using camera and lighting. This means camera placement/movement/focus/framing, use of suitable color and light, etc. in order to make not a picture, but cinema - moving images that convey a sense of what's going on, both atmospherically and narratively. In other words, to tell a story. What those people are admiring is the set/costume/prop design, mostly.

No time to do it better? Knowing the american approach to health and job performance, i guess Rian was just drugged away. to not feel his anxiety for the ongoing fuckup. His directing worked great for movies like knives out. Constant twists and turns, no real plot to follow, it’s just a movie on its own. Say about the prequels what you want, but they had an original story that contributed to the bigger Story, didn't disrespect legacy characters in disgusting way and the main character wasn't a Mary Sue. I mean it's so ironic. I bet all my money that when Disney bought Star Wars and first discussed the future ST, one main topic at the start was "how do we avoid such a backlash like during the prequels" (I personally always loved the prequels). And here we 3 Films later, with a backlash 10 times huger then during the prequels and hardcore prequel haters stating that this dumpster fire, Disney calls a triology, is worse then the prequels. I'm gonna be honest, I would not have seen Knives Out if I had known it was a Rian Johnson flick. I saw a trailer, loved it, and saw the film in about a 12 hour period, and was stunned, it's one of my favorite movies. His absolute failure with the Star Wars franchise but absolute victory with Knives Out shows what kind of thinker he is. He plays well in his own sandbox, by himself, but struggles when tasked with a group project where he has to please others. He didn't have the capacity to understand the Star Wars universe, it's characters, the fans or their relationship to the franchise, so his film failed. He wanted to "shake things up" but did so by violating the trust we had in the rules of that universe.

If you think of Rian’s cinematographer in that light, taking every character as a silhouette, everything would look like a big bunch, with actors and robots all crowded together as a big mess. I’m not saying you can’t consider the inner detail of a character or object, it’s just while “blocking” this is all I consider when filming.

So at 5:18, he forgot the first rule of shooting a scene. The rule of thirds. ANYTHING in the center of the shot is treated as insignificant to the viewer subconsciously. The space that people view the screen has meaning. Riding off into the sunset is always shot the same for a hero triumphant for a reason. Framing the scene correctly captures the movement and helps write the story. That is the job.

Just a thought I had, the way Robot Head walked through the number of “close up insert shots” there are, it almost feels like a pissed off editor trying to piece together something that the director didn’t shoot near enough coverage for, so the editor has to hold the audience by the hand for the story to make any sense at all? To construct a story in the editing room, when the director didn’t shoot enough coverage for them to cohesively piece the story together & they no longer have access to sets and locations, they’ll have a “2nd” or “3rd” director go out and shoot an insert item or establishing shot, so the films story visually makes sense. The best example I can think of is, maybe the editor just had close ups of Kylo and Leia, with no context whatsoever of what is happening, so the editor asks for the 2nd unit to film the close hand on the trigger button & then taking it off, because the audience would have no idea what is happening in the film otherwise. They can also ask of off camera ADR of basic exposition, when the script & visuals don’t make sense. I think it’s usually one or two scenes. I wonder is the editor had an entire list of shots they would need to make the film make any sense at all? Which makes me wonder, maybe this movie was even more of an incoherent mess than what we actually saw, & an editor had to go back and fill things in, just to get to the point it ended up at? Have you seen Star Wars Theory's Video showing an old Interview of George Lucas? He there shares his plans for the sequels that he had in mind before selling to Disney. Would love to hear your opinion on that 👌🏻

Close ups are good at highlighting something important or fostering a claustrophobic feeling in the audience. Using them too much to say "this is important" only makes the audience feel that either nothing is important, everything is small, or both. The movie comes off as tiny in this epic setting. Everything in the movie feels like it's inconsequential. Sure, you can tell an inconsequential story in this setting, but there are payoffs in the film that should be huge and somehow feel like nothing at all. Luke dies in this film and it comes off like a wet fart because by that time the audience realizes that none of it matters. Which is exactly what happens when you put a nihilist in charge of a film like this.

I do NOT think Rian Johnson is a bad director. In fact I think he is an amazing director. Knives Out is a special twist on a popular trope, and was absolutely spectacular. Another little known fact is he directed Ozymandias, a Breaking Bad episode that most people consider the best TV show episode in history. He is not a bad director when he is allowed to shine in his own right. I think that he simply was a poor pick for a Star Wars movie. I believe that he fucked up with TLJ. Can we blame his directing skill though? I think many more factors are at play here than simply his directing. It’s fun to shit on him for this particular stain in his otherwise impressive career, but to call him a bad director is just too much. We will never know if he will direct a Mandalorian episode or not. One thing I know for sure though, is that I am willing to give him another chance, especially after he created masterpieces like Ozymandias.
@BWMagus
@BWMagus 2 жыл бұрын
He didn't say TLJ sucked simply because of his directing; he said the exact opposite, in fact, that TLJ definitely had shit writing, but that, also, the direction wasn't great either. And I keep seeing people say, basically, "He made one good movie and he directed this one good episode of an established TV series, with someone else's script, and some damn good actors who already knew what they were doing in the roles, so therefore, he's an 'amazing' director." Look, he's directed more good shit than me, cool, I'll give credit for that, but except for managing to not fuck a TV episode that already had all the elements to be great, you're just saying he made a single good movie. Being a one-hit-wonder doesn't make you amazing, especially not when it's cancelled out by wiping your ass with one of the most beloved IPs on planet earth.

@@BWMagus you go ahead and blame him for the fall of TLJ sure, but if you claim that we can’t attribute great actors, writers and direction to Rian because it’s not all him, then why should we attribute the failure of TLJ’s horrible plot and terrible acting to him? It’s not all him after all. I ain’t no Rian simp for sure, but I know the value of people when they’re allowed to work with something they’re familiar and comfortable with.

The only reason Rian would want to direct an episode of the Mandalorian is to make a deliberate clusterfk to agitate fans. Dividing fans and making films that both excite & infuriate fanbases is literally exactly what he aims for.
