@madmod3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, times have changed since many of these tests were done and tech has improved even for these 2v's. For example, he had to make his own intake manifold to support the power he wanted because nothing was available then. The aftermarket support that was available when Richard was building these two valve engines has improved and people know what works better. Another example, I know for a fact that the off-shelf cam specs that comp uses are less than ideal for a 2v. Once you go past the duration needed to make power with the stock pi intake manifold you just lose midrange power for comparable peak gains. None of the comp grinds for pi or npi heads have tight enough lsa for optimized na use, and most of the pi high lift cams dont even fit without fly-cuts or retarding the cam which further softens up the mid-range(more of an issue of the stock pi heads, valves, and lack of ptv clearance with pi heads). What is funny is companies like MHS, and Cushman have consistently pushed that NPI heads can fit cams so much more aggressive than what would even fit a stock pi headed long-block without bending valves. Nick had his recession buster 2v combos, and both them and cms still havd some of the best modular cams available.

I haven't been into the engine get into the engine yet to identify what cam is in it now, but I know I wanted to move to something that was going to give me an increase on the top end for road track use. I have read different things on different forums, and frankly, it scares me that I'm going to buy and install the wrong ones. Any suggestions on which cam to put in?

Since none of the aftermarket ecu's are set up well to run the VCT, run them locked out with the TFS 2v/4v adjustable crank gears and run them at a 108 or 110 degree ICL, then pick one of the cams and run it at 102 or 104 ICL to get a bit of an idea of what the potential is by using the VCT. @str8edge_lifer833 жыл бұрын
It will. But even a stock intake will, you need bigger cams and a btter valve spring.
@dilsher123 жыл бұрын
@@str8edge_lifer83 Dont think it's the cams , you'll notice on all the cams the power starts to fall off right after 6000rpm. The bigger 280 cam should carry power better up top but it doesn't, it makes more power compared to the shorter ones but it falls off in the same exact curve and manner .
@str8edge_lifer833 жыл бұрын
@@dilsher12 yeah. It needs better valve springs. that stock style intake manifold will pull all the way to a solid 6,700 RPM I've seen many dyno runs live in person that do that it's all about valve spring package and cam duration. Converting to a shorter runner intake will also help with how high the RPM band goes, but the factory intake can go pretty high.

@turdjockey26283 жыл бұрын
I'm no expert but they're the same heads to my knowledge the difference between the non pi and the pi he is talking about is through generations of the years on the 4.6 has I'm pretty sure the five fours are the same if not all of them have a pi head and all of these cans he referred to will slide right into a 5.4 liter in work just fine there's no benefits to putting a 4.6 intake on your truck motor if it's in a truck because you're going to lose a lot of low-end torque but if that Motors in a car you will gain some high-end they do sell intake adapters by the way

The 5.4 got the pi heads in 99 or 2000 maybe 01 . They are basically the same as Mustang pi heads . Slight difference between windsor and romero heads like valve covers ,timing covers, cam sprockets . Other than those minor difference's they are the same heads. Bore size is the same for 5.4 and 4.6 with the 5.4 having more stroke to increase c.i.d. and the block having a taller deck height. Can use 4.6 pi intake on 5.4 with adapter plates.

Do a shootout between the 4.7 Chrysler and 4.6 Ford. "Battle of the Unloved SOHC's". Maybe throw in the 4.8L GM just for fun. One interesting thing I noticed on the Ford Mod cams is they have a smaller spread between advertised and effective duration than cams for pushrod engines. The Mod cams in this video had a 36 degree spread, while pushrod cams typically have 52 degrees. It seems like a good thing to get the same effective duration with less advertised duration.

@timothybayliss66803 жыл бұрын
@@19jody72 the pi heads have a smaller chamber and more available valve lift as well. The intake ports are significantly better on stock pi heads vs stock non pi heads and they have a different intake port shape. The exhaust port is about the same, its really not that different. The difference in port shape means intakes do not easily swap over and the biggest limit on non pi heads is the lack of aftermarket intakes and how poor the stock intake flows. For everyone the PI, which means performance improved, is the better head to use.
