Alzheimer's isn't a genetic inevitability. A diagnosis doesn't have to come with a death sentence. In fact, according to neurologists Drs. Dean & Ayesha Sherzai, 90% of all Alzheimer's cases can be prevented. And for the 10% with a strong genetic risk for cognitive decline, the disease can be delayed for ten to fifteen years.
I consider this episode a must listen for everyone, especially for those at genetic risk or otherwise impacted by a loved one who currently suffers.

I lost my father to early Alzheimer’s. Up until now I was following his path as a heavy drinker a meat eater. I’ve gone a month now clean and sober. Also Vegan. I feel in believable! I truly believe that a plant based diet is the answer to so many things.

Lost both my parents to dementia. Mother to vascular dementia and my father to Alzheimer’s. This scares me more than cancer.

Chronic Emotional/mental stress should be seriously considered as an important factor in Alzheimer's disease.

This video is the responsible for the biggest epiphany to improve my health. My grandma recently died from Alzheimer's. Her diet was mostly animal fats and processed sugars. Oddly she wasn't overweight. My family is still very ignorant about the plant based health benefits. It's hard to see ignorance slowly kill people. Thank you for all you do!

Its the sugar! Avoid sugar and try intermittent fasting. Fats not the enemy but obesity is! I tried intermittent fasting and all my brain fog disappeared like magic [it took 6 months] and I feel so much better Ive adopted intermittent fasting as my new eating routine. I sleep better and feel alot better too..no brain fog at all!

Awesome episode. thank you. My Father died of Alzheimer's this last May. He had it for at least 10 years. the last 4 were brutal. Whole Plant Based is the way to live. I've been doing this for 3 years. now.

Plant food clearly does not cure it. Elimination of all sugar, carbs and plant food, also seed oils, and kicking statin meds WILL reduce greatly or eliminate alzheimers and parkinsons.

So my 89 year old Dad.... Ran 10 miles every day (including Christmas day) for as long as I can remember... He was certainly addicted to his endorphins, he was still running in marathons in his 70's. When his surgeon told him to stop running after his hip replacement, he took to cycling 10 miles a day .... He grew all his own vegetables, we always ate home made meals... Not a lot of added sugar, no processed foods, but did eat bread, cheese and small amounts of meat...He doesn't smoke and drinks very little.. At the age of 82 my Dad was knocked of his bike and broke his back and neck... Having had to wear a head brace for six weeks he made a full recovery, we felt his was due to his fitness levels being so good... Now not being allowed (by family) to continue riding his bike... He started to go the the gym every morning at 6am for an hour...... However, he was then diagnosed with Dementia ........................... What an awful, awful blow.... So, you can do EVERYTHING right ... and still get the blooming thing.... I've decided to blame the TBI !!!!

1:03:28 - The discussion about coconut oil and the person who gave it to her husband (who had Alzheimer's Disease) was Dr. Mary Newport. I remember this from several years ago, when I was a fledgling Paleo fanatic. Unfortunately, Mr. Newport succumbed to his disease in January 2016 at the age of 65. His obituary states he'd dealt with Alzheimer's Disease for 15 years. On Mary Newport's website, she wrote: _"Steve’s brain was donated to the Florida Brain Bank, a research study for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. We learned that he suffered from both Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia."_ Some of you may recall Robin WIlliams being afflicted with Lewy Body Dementia, too. Great guests. Lots of good information. Major point on prevention, which is what our disgraceful government should be working to facilitate instead of wasting time, money, and lives debating methods of paying for insurance premiums, which is symptom not a cause of medical greed.

You have me motivated to push my plant based & fasting lifestyle to one that goes beyond the marathon and into the world if Ultras - well at least once. This was an amazing discussion. Is this your longest interview yet? My dad had Alzheimer’s but also had cancer. He kept forgetting that he had cancer due to the memory loss but it was the cancer that killed him. I plan on reading The Alzheimer’s Solution by Dean and Ayesha Sherzai M.D. to learn what more of what I should do and increase in my life (like meditation, exercise and social interaction as well as find more challenging work opportunities). Wow You have a new subscriber! I stumbled on this podcast after researching encephalitis. I had in year2000, coma, paralyzed nose down, flat lined, wheelchair, walker cane. I was told, after becoming coherent lucky to be alive, that cause was HSB, EBV, I tested positive for varicella, all formally misdiagnosed as flu while divorcing and I’ll leave the other not really concerning doctors attending alone. But what saved me is I was drugged in a night club, getting me the medical attention to find these variants. Post slow recovery… I have lived, wanted to die, and learned ways to overcome many labels and managed the effects, could barely walk, to even buying a motorcycle couple times for living therapy! Lol My health seems to be rollercoaster and so many docs only treating symptoms. I want to find or expand on the root cause! . I just got out of hospital recently, I had a mini stroke< I knew of one potential years ago. So back to seeking the real deal. I have been complaining g of certain pain , sharp, finery, numb, tingling, slurred speech at times from former aphasia, but I’m noticing every doctor only selects one-3 pieces of puzzle instead of the big picture! One says this, other doesn’t mention and says another…. I want to get to a neuro is get the big picture here to tie all together. I am very intune, and have concerns by symptoms that fibro and neuropathy (suggested/not clinically diag) may actually be ALS, and it is finally progressed enough to reack havoc showing it’s reality. I haven’t been able to walk feels like glass, and pain head to toe when told after ct scan recently found “strokes” plural stated by ER Doc. I know something has been off in my body coming on hard for past 5 years including skin rash, hives, breakouts…. But the last 3 months I’m more consistent with being down. Your podcasts bring me comfort in understanding past/present in regards to my journey. I have been trying to find support groups for encephalitis overcomer, not found, or a “no reply” from admin. ANY SUGESSTIONS would be great where to look. Or hell, maybe I’ll start one myself! 😂.

(Sigh) Finally, people are "starting" to look at health. My Mother died from a stroke (complications over a year). She was fanatic about diet, but did not know how to mitigate stress. Wasn't much into sweat exercise, but she was born in 1914, and that generation of women did not necessarily do that. She did love anything doing with brain health, and as a nurse she tried to create as much brain health as possible through herbs, and food. Great information.

My granddad just died, not of Alzheimer's but he'd just been diagnosed with it. Very forgetful, lost most of his memories. He had a very high sugar/alcohol diet for years. I'm slowly working towards cutting out sugar from mine but it's so hard, harder than quitting smoking or drinking by far. I'm physically fit, do high intensity training and have big legs so lots of this video gives me comfort but getting that sugar habit under control is my greatest challenge...

It doesn't run in your family, you all eat the same diet. Change your diet, avoid corn and wheat products completely. Eat less sugar, lose weight and try intermittent fasting and its very unlikely you'll get alzheimers. Also eat healthy fats, like virgin olive oil etc...

Rich - I’ve only listened to thefirst 20 minutes so far and am keen to listen to it all - a very important topic we have been dealing with in our world lately. I am not sure how to get Dan Kittredge and the Bionutrient Food Association (BFA) on your radar but my husband and I have just attended the BFA conference in Massachusetts. Dan has been developing a light spectrum device which consumers will be able to use to detect the quality of produce. My poor Mother got Alzheimers before 70 and died from Ovarian Cancer at 72. she was vegetarian since early teenager so I'm also guessing that dairy and eggs, are also a huge contributor towards this horrible disease?

This is very belated but yes dairy and eggs and meat are full of natural hormones. Dairy comes from forced impregnated cows. What do pregnant mammals make a lot of? Also poultry and animals are given hormones yes even the ‘organic’ ones to get bigger. I know this is a year old but I truly hope your mother is doing well.

Also of consideration regarding increased incidence in women: Only women experience menopause. Menopause causes hot flashes, exacerbated by a pro-inflammatory diet and lifestyle. Hot flashes impair restorative sleep. Sleep apnea, night sweats, etc, etc increases physical, mental, and emotional dis-regulation.

I have Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Fibromyalgia, Hypothyroidism, and have undergone 3 major Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery. And have noticed, with my wonderful CPAP machine, I have more energy, however, saying we need strenuous exercise when I also deal with Chronic Pain, with all that I've been through, reminds me how it's all individual. However, with all I shared, and having gone Vegan a year and a half ago, is there significant hope for me?!? #proudvegan #veganfortheanimals 💚💚💚

I wish they had mentioned the work of Dr Bredesen. They should be collaborating, not competing, as they both advocate for lifestyle changes to prevent/postpone Alzheimer's.

His KetoFlex 12/3 diet can include pasture raised eggs, pasture raised, grass fed meat as a condiment, and wild caught fish. Fats are mostly MUFAs with smaller amounts of PUFAs and SFAs.

My stepfather has many signs of early onset Alzheimer's. My mom is so stressed and feels so helpless. I have shown her videos on how a whole food plant based diet can truly help and she agrees BUT doesn't seem willing to make the trade-offs. The house is still stock filled with processed junk like oreos, nutter butters, jimmy dean breakfast sandwiches, and ben & jerry's. I hope one day they can take the leap and follow a whole food plant based diet as well as work on sleep hygiene (he snores). He's almost 60 years old and his father was diagnosed in his early 60's. Any suggestions?

I went to my Dr. as I have bursitis and inflammation in my hip due to an old accident. I've already had the cortisone shots and was looking for other options. To make my point that it was really painful I mentioned to him I was heartbroken as I have to sell my two story house that I love because the stairs are making my hip worse. HIs exact words were "you should see a psychologist to learn coping skills!" Handed me a list with about 5 names on it! WTH? No kidding!! Looks good in his little report I guess. SMH!!

You can run a WFPB ketogenic diet, though many confuse ketogenic as being synonymous with "paleo". It's been shown to be the most effective course of action for slowing certain aggressive brain cancers, as well as alleviating certain types of epilepsy like they mentioned and one or two other conditions which slip my mind at the moment. It's a very stressful state for the body and comes at heavy long-term costs that will kill you themselves eventually, which is why it should be reserved as a last resort and administered & tracked very carefully by experienced clinicians. Dr. Toni Bark is a great source of information on that. But I think we can all take advantage of ketosis though water-only fasting for at least 3 weeks at a time, plus all of the other beneficial health effects that fasting offers outside of what mere ketosis can do. Thanks a bunch, Rich! Somehow I just stumbled on this channel but I've been listening to you for the better part of a year. Your work has done a lot for me, and I will definitely be picking up the good doctors' book! Peace and plants!

I have a certain breed of dog, thats prone to seizures. And I started feeding them wheat germ oil daily (one tbsp per dog, daily) after 3 years Ive seen the seizures completely disappear. Its extremely rare now for any of them to have a seizure. The 13 yr old use to have seizures 2 to 3 times a year and now 0...its a miracle!

Great interview with two thoughtful and engaging people. One difficulty I have with the content is that both of these doctors say that they have no agenda and that they only follow the science/research, when in my view that has clearly never really been settled. Most studies show associations rather than establishing causation, and many studies are poorly designed (i.e. using hydrogenated coconut oil, etc). They attack a ketogenic diet, when that diet can range from burgers at McDonald's without the bun, to something like that promoted by Dr. Terry Wahls or Dr. Eric Berg (basically 9 cups of vegetables per day). There is as much difference as a vegan who eats largely vegetables and one who eats mainly jelly beans and other technically "vegan" food. These doctors refuse to accept that gluten is unhealthy or damaging (I personally have no idea if it is or isn't) for more than a small percentage of the population (presumably since they haven't found long-term studies that support that view) and yet the out-of-hand reject the ketogenic diet on the basis that they assume that, over the longer term, it will lead to detrimental health effects (where is their evidence for this is they are supposedly so evidenced based, or this simply them showing their natural biases or agendas)? Of course, there is nothing wrong with promoting one's agenda, but ideally one should be upfront about that. I started a whole foods based ketogenic diet, and after a year it had dramatically improved nearly every aspect of my life (energy levels, skin/nails condition, cognitive function, improved sleep, etc). I spent $1300 on blood tests and basically almost every marker show dramatic improvement. I eat mainly vegetables by volume, with only limited amounts of grass feed meats, and salmon/sardines, and a lot of fat (calorie wise). Even the attack on saturated fat is disappointing to me as I think that much of the research is now showing that it isn't in fact harmful (unless combined with a high sugar/carb based diets). Rich made the point about confirmation bias and I agree with him completely on that. The attacks made between these groups is not helpful to any party. However, when Dr. Dean talks about confirmation bias, it's as if he doesn't think that he has any such bias. Aside from that, I follow much of what is listed here.

I think their point was they based their recommendations on analysis of long term, large population studies. Are there long term, large population studies that show gluten is bad? How about showing a ketogenic diet is good?

I think the Charlie Foundation has fairly decent research/data on ketogenic diets since the 1930's for children with epilpsy although unfortunately those were mainly low protein diets as well and in many cases no other significant blood or other testing was done. However, a quick review on PubMed shows a large number of studies on ketogenic diets, although one needs to look carefully to determine how the diet was formulated (technically, a diet of 100% Canola oil will put one into ketosis). Even as far back as 2004, the NHIB found, in respect of a 24 week study (over 5.5 months) that: "...the present study shows the beneficial effects of a long-term ketogenic diet. It significantly reduced the body weight and body mass index of the patients. Furthermore, it decreased the level of triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and blood glucose, and increased the level of HDL cholesterol. Administering a ketogenic diet for a relatively longer period of time did not produce any significant side effects in the patients. Therefore, the present study confirms that it is safe to use a ketogenic diet for a longer period of time than previously demonstrated". Most clinical nutritional studies in any type of controlled environment (particularly a metabolic ward study, for instance) are of quite a short duration (less than one year and many less than one month). For the longer terms studies, I think one should be more careful with their published results since so much of it is association-based. That gives valuable information in its own right, but it does not establish causation. Even worse, many of such studies have people writing down their food intake on a per week basis (some people would have trouble writing down what they ate the day previously). At any rate, I'm not sure that I'd rely on much of the published research as what is much more important to me is what results I am currently experiencing. Once very beneficial results are demonstrated, then the research should just be used to question, probe and examine the details, and fine tune the approach. At least that works for me so far.

+Todd Studer I could not disagree with your comments more. Firstly, I think your original assessment of this interview is flawed. I have studied thousands of hours of science on ALL sides of the arguments over the past several years. I have personally chosen to go down the same path recommended by these Doctors (for the record). I have also listened to thousands of such interviews of those on both sides of the Plant Based VS ketogenic battle. Though all of your comments "seem" logical and well thought out some of what swayed me you have conveniently left out. Firstly, these doctors have actually done as good a job as ANY doctors/scientists I have listened to of being unbiased. Lets talk specifically about what they said about Keto as it relates to "long term" health and short term health. Your comments seem to ignore what they actually said. They stated it IS beneficial in the short term and some of the reasons why. They then added what Decades of validated and repeated studies have shown as to why it is NOT healthy (as compared to a plant based diet) for the Long term. I also noticed you use comments such as "long term" and then referenced 24 weeks? 24 weeks is NOT long term. The "Blue Zone" information alone spans hundreds of years. and every blue zone consumed 97% or more whole plant foods. My point here is you can "nitpick" the literal threshold of causation, but I am an intelligent human being that has "common sense" so I have chosen to see all the data from all positions and assess it from the standpoint of The logical most likely dietary guidelines that give me the best chance of achieving a long and healthy existence. I am sorry but those who make the arguments you have made I see as viewing it from the position of "what data can I find that "allows" me to do what I want to do. (some may take offense to this and claim I am doing the same, my rebuttal to that is I spent nearly 50 years of my life eating what the mainstream society said was "healthy" or "OK" or "Not PROVEN" to Cause. this or that and My body completely shut down before I was 50.) That is when I dedicated my life to getting the TRUTH. again my point here is I wanted things like meat & dairy to "win" the battle but after exhaustive research the evidence is OVERWHELMING that ALL animal products, (including all meat dairy & seafood) and most added salt keeping it to the RDA levels, ALL commercially processed food, (ALL Processed Oils included in that, if you want the benefits of olive oil or coconut oil for example consume the olives or coconuts in their whole form in limited quantities), and even after "limiting the types of fats be sure to keep them at around 10-20% max of overall caloric intake., and lastly eliminate all "processed sugars" (in other words a healthy mix of fruits is fine but do not "add" processed sugars to your meals such as sugar, fancy sugars such as coconut sugar, raw sugar etc...or honey agave, maple syrup etc as ALL of these are "processed foods) Again Todd, then you cite something about studies showing the value of ketogenesis for epilepsy in children in your argument but that is EXACTLY what these Doctors acknowledged. You seem to be the one with Bias working so hard to discredit them. THEY were factual and stated the pros and cons of each topic. The thing that bothers me the most about comments such as yours is they "lead' people that dont know to believe you are telling truth when in reality you "CHOSE" to ignore years and years of proven info for example that saturated fats (and ALL "Processed OILS") have a direct affect on Coronary Artery Disease. (not to mention diabetes, some brain ailments as the doctors stated, some cancers and many other diseases too numerous to mention here) Which again was the position these doctors took they stated how keto can benefit short term then pointed out how it is not healthy long term because of that scientific data.....(and again common sense says why would it EVER be healthy to put your body in a constant state of starvation, that is just NOT how the body was meant to function (LONG TERM). The fact that YOU have CHOSEN to ignore that data and not believe it should not be used to make arguments and try to discredit such clearly neutral scientific and medical professionals findings as if you are some sort of more qualified expert. I could go on but this is too long already. I just hope I have stopped even one person from believing your misinformation and having them die before their time. :)

so she's manipulative and has some mental issues. There is a lot to learn about why she feels the need to do this to get what she wants, and to gradually help her heal herself of the need to do this, and to find out that REAL satisfaction happens when you make yourself well. I know this behavior well. It's right up there with addiction, because the person suffering from it (yeah, SHE suffers from it too, and first) needs to protect whatever makes her feel "happy" and secure. But that person isn't happy at all, as proven in the long run when health goes totally south, and all loved ones are alienated. Her problem is her problem, but it becomes yours too, as she makes life harder for everyone. Counseling is out there. Seriously consider it. And if you pray or meditate, do more of that, but in the pursuit of answers, not magic, or justification for resentment, which we do to ourselves a lot Wishing you luck

My mom is 65,she lives with me and has an Alzheimer's disease for about 5 years now. Her body is healthy, but she has almost no clear speech, it is pretty much always confused, sleeps most of the day away, The saving grace in all this is that her personality has not changed. Veggies have weak to zero b 12 and amino acids which we need to maintain our lean muscle mass. I've salaried in Africa and I saw a baboon with a baby deer it had killed and was planning to eat. Primates do eat proteins from insects to small animals. Our early hunters and gatherers weren't hunting veggies.. Gorillas may have big muscles, but their middle girth are obesity huge. These are low energy and overweight animals. Herbivores have 2 stomachs so they can digest grass. Humans have one stomach. Grains make me ill. .I do eat lots of organic veggies but I eat mozzarella cheese, organic eggs, fish, chicken, And an occasional beef. I look 30 years younger than I am. Doctors are amazed. No jowls and wrinkles on this face. I'm 82.
