I realize that this was 3 years ago, but I have to leave a comment. I am disappointed with the extreme negative light on needing an antidepressant, how awful that is, feeding into the stigma of mental health challenges. As AJ experienced, they can be helpful at a real time of need. Also disappointed in both of you talking down about a mental health hospital and the people who work may also have mental health issues, like they are not allowed to be real people. Sort of like AJ being judged about teaching valuable information about health because she carried extra weight. Oy vey. Judgement is the devil. Let's remember that we all have our paths, challenges and purposes. Who are we to judge? There is a place for many different everythings - we can all agree that diversity is critical to our wellbeing! In a world with so many people suffering with mental illness, please don't make it wrong to lean on medication. And by the way, at least 95% (I wanted to say 99%) of the people I have seen get off "psych meds" especially Lexapro, are able to come off when they are ready with no physical problems, especially not like a doll who is being squeezed and her eyes and ears are popping out! Maybe you, AJ, had extra sensitivity for whatever reason, but that is NOT a 'normal' response. This kind of talk scares people to reach out for help if/when they may need it. Rich, I speak to you and your obvious negative leaning and judgement around mental health care as well. Not many people live the luxury of the lifestyle you and your circle lives. Put your money where it could be used and help support people who can't afford organic foods or supplements that could be good alternatives to medications if sustainable. I will get off my soap box now. I do love the RR podcasts and suggest them often. That is why when I saw this I just had to speak up.

I first came across Chef AJ when I was searching for a recipe online. I thought, “This woman is far too extreme!” and although I’d given up meat by that time, I thought I would never go as far as she did, avoiding oil and sugar and salt. Over the next few months I found myself going more and more in that direction as I researched the whole-food plant-based diet (which I’d never heard of till I watched one of her videos with one of the famous doctors as her guest) and now I’m 100 percent on board, apart from the salt. I have a medical condition which requires that I add salt to my diet in order to keep my electrolytes in balance but I suffer from low blood pressure so the salt does not affect me adversely. I had heard snippets of Chef AJ’s story but never the whole thing from the beginning. I share several elements of her story in my own life and can really identify where she is coming from. She is an inspiration to so many people. I have also been in situations where the only explanation for my escaping them has been down to divine intervention. My mother always used to say that nothing you do or experience in life is ever wasted, and this has certainly proved true in my own life, and I think in Chef AJ’s. If she had not gone through all those traumas and problems, she would not be in a position today to help so many people. “Spared for a purpose” really means something! Thank you for sharing such a wonderful interview. Definitely one to save and re-watch again and again!

This video was so helpful to me because I have been doing so well and consistent on my lifestyle of almost no fat, raw till 4 and delicious starchy cooked food in the evening. But recently in emotional moments at 2 different social gatherings caused me to eat crap. I did feel very much like an addict. I got very sick both times. I was analyzing what happened and how to succeed in the future, and I realized there were unloving moments at the gathering that left an emotional depletion. The high-fat processed food was suddenly irritable at that moment. My mind became obsessive and there was nothing else I could focus on or think about until I ate it...... the technique: I realized when I get in that state, I need to leave the gathering - either temporarily, or completely and get away from the food. I need to take a moment to be with my emotions and see if I can comfort them immediately outside, or if I need to leave all together and go comfort them at home. But either way, it is a lot like an alcoholic needing to leave a party because alcohol is served. It's real. The addiction and compulsion. Another key is to be well-fed before going.

I had a vegan German chocolate cake 14 or 15 years ago at "Old Dog, New Trick" in the French Quarter in New Orleans. I didn't eat dessert at the time ---- ever. They pushed it on me so hard, and I refused. They eventually demanded that I eat it for free because they wanted me to try it. It was amazing. It was sweetened with fruit juices, and the frosting was made out of whipped tofu and carob. It was so light and delicate --- you not only didn't feel heavy inside after eating it --- you actually felt lighter.

Being in a wheelchair highly motivated me to find a way out of it, I had crippling arthritis and didn’t want to be in it and looked for the way out of it. Dairy had bothered me as a child, so I decided no more of that, it eased my pain. I decided if this small change got me out of the wheelchair, inside of 3 weeks, what would happen if I turned vegan. I started looking on KZbin and listening to lectures, and in short order found Dr. John McDougall. That was when I was 60, and 200 lbs. I am 70 and weigh 120 lbs. I am close to goal. I did not always do plant-based perfectly. Spent too many years using cheat foods. I never knew a Vegan, I had to look I’m the mirror to find one. My weight got stuck at 160, and began walking with 10,000 Steps. That really helped. I do exercises at home daily and walk since May of this year, if the weather allows or ride my exercise bike. I got “The Starch Solution”, an Audible book by Dr. John McDougall. I listen to that book when I walk. It was all my life I was programmed to think one way, so I can reprogram myself with what I know is the right way for me to think about food. My husband and joined a gym lately. I’m wearing size 4 skinny jeans now. I really do feel good. Yes, most people will change when they hit a crisis. But the crisis worked so I found my way to better health.

So funny, I did the exact same thing with cheese. I've always dreamed of traveling to France and cheese and pastries are a big part of it. So it held me back but I realized that on my own, when I'm in France I can decide what to do then. And now I look forward to eating at all the vegan restaurants when I travel.

Love! And when you go you can use this Paris vegan guide to find all the good vegan cheese and pastries (there are really so many great vegan options there)! www.plantbaseddetroit.com/2018/04/the-ultimate-vegan-guide-paris.html

I adore AJ!! I just went vegetarian and I’m hoping to go vegan. Watching AJ has been a huge influence. When I was a teen I announced to my mom that I was going vegetarian and I got a “the f@&k you are. Not in my house” response. I’ve been sharing many of these videos with her and now she is going vegetarian! I hope I look as glowing as you when I am 58. 🙌

I am an overweight vegan because I use bread and sugar to assuage my anxiety. A theory is that these highly processed foods affect the dopamine in the brain centers much like opioids.

Do not believe everything people say, fat is needed to absorb some nutrients in vegetables, not a lot but some, please be careful, olive oil is very good for people, it has been used for centuries, do your research, take care of you
@AlexiHolford4 жыл бұрын
lola0600 - you are wrong. Any oil extracted from the whole food is very bad for you. Eat a little of foods that contain oil, like nuts, seeds and avocados.
@victoriousvalentine97794 жыл бұрын
Alexi Holford I'm positive you can't really mean what this appears to say. I'd love to be directed to the research that supports what you say, because there is so much reliable research to support use of olive oil.

My sister has epilepsy, she not get seizures during the day, she also not have it tappeed on her forehead. School friends didn't know... I am sure I have mild ADHD, I was a girl and was always very happy kid - really nobody care to make diagnosis in that time. I was just this super active girl that always forget home work and pecils . You were/are healthy but really you are not aware about all health issues may struggle with.

Oh and we had severe food allergies and my fahter had same sympthoms as we had but nobody ever diagnosed him. He is always super thin... My one daughter have food allergies too... It's just running in families. We eat healthy, no gluten, cow milk for kids. Home made meals.

Wow ... I’ve listened to and read Chef AJ for years but somehow never heard her full story ... it’s amazing how knowing something about what someone has been through can shift one’s perspective about that person. I never would have believed that someone could be a sugar and caffeine addict to the point of destruction had I not lived with one ... I’ve witnessed my beloved husband struggle with a sugar addiction for 16 years. He discovered his dad crushed under a tractor at age 8 and I’m certain that that trauma and the subsequent years of abusive stepfathers and moving from place to place had him turn to a substance like sugar. He never drank alcohol, smoked or did drugs but the effect of sugar on him is no less damaging. Thank you for a powerful interview with an amazing woman Rich ...

Hearing that her dad had a TBI is so sad and scary. Unfortunately, this is very common behavior after a traumatic brain injury. I feel for her because I’ve spent time working on a neuro unit with several people with TBIs and they are often completely disinhibited and aggressive. Unless you’ve witnessed it, you can’t possibly fathom the extent of these behaviors.

👍👍I love what she says about abstinence! I’ve found that complete abstinence (cigarettes, booze, weed) FAR easier than trying to use in moderation (couldn’t do moderation) With trying to use X (whatever substance/food) in moderation, there’s all these choices to struggle with: when it’s ok to consume/use (what situation or time), how much, for how long. With complete abstinence, it’s very simple: I don’t do/use/consume that. It’s been about 8 years of abstinence from intoxicants for me. I don’t miss it, there’s no temptation, even if around someone using. And I sure don’t miss hangovers or the crippling depression that inevitably followed the highs. Now I’m learning that I need to think about some foods like I do intoxicants; looking at you, 🍪 cookies!
