I’m commenting before reading other commenters. When Ryan suggested a monument/statue to represent Responsibility, the image that came to my mind is a male and female human holding a sphere representing the Earth, but not like Atlas did holding Earth over his shoulders, but embracing Earth.

Was kind of just listening along not really feeling to strongly either way until the guest seemed to blame the the death of a cancer patient as being due to someone being "irresponsible" with their ''freedom," and saying so now "where is that person's freedom?" That did not resonate with me at all. Freedom as perceived from the classical American point of view is pretty well defined and the guest's statement IMO is redefining freedom as something else... Just my 2 cents

Additionally, he referenced Texas law maker's action on mandates or lack of mandates as "passing the buck," and like wait um that is not passing the buck that is exactly what freedom and individual liberty is all about. Personal choice as opposed to government mandate!

I think he was saying that one person's freedom of choice caused an infection in someone else which resulted in their death. The dead person no longer has freedom of choice because they are dead. That's the way I took it. I've struggled with freedom of choice around covid. If you choose not to wear sunscreen, smoke, or wear a helmet on a motorcycle, the risk is mainly on you. The American view of freedom fits well with those things. But if you choose to take risks with something that is contagious, the risk isn't only on you. If you happen to be infected, the risk is shared by others you come in contact with. You could greatly impact someone's life, which can take away their freedom to live their life the way they wanted or planned.

Well, what about the risks of passive smoking for others and even just driving a motorcycle or car, very dangerous for others. 100% agree. Ryan speaks out of both sides of his mouth. He preaches stoicism with is majority about self-awareness, self-discipline, and individuality, but cannot help his liberal prejudices permeate although those same prejudices are antithetical to the very message he espouses.

I took the time of the pandemic to better myself. Finished a B.A., time to study german, hit the gym, work on my house, and learned to control anxiety. I think that's the new normal, disregard what made me sick and work on what's important. I don't mean the loosers in D.C. definition of "new normal", but the independent pursuit of happiness.

Great section on "courage" in service of basically evil ends - can't tell you how many times during the last administration I'd become so frustrated with language used around Donald Trump that for better or worse would have these specific, noble connotations, because they were basically *attributes* detached from any integrity. Namely, "loyalty" was in freaking non-stop parlance. Made me feel nuts. Also, my husband and I opened a new bookshop on a shoestring in the UK 2004, lost it in 2006, suffered pretty serious financial and psychic damage for a lot of years, but I'd never change that experience. It's one of the "failure" stepping stones that's given me more wisdom to do the next big leap, that I'm on the precipice of now. And so much good came out of that "traumatic failure", and also, bookshops rule. Next time we're visiting my pops and steps in ATX, we'll have to come find his and pick up some stuff.

I couldn't make it through this entire interview. Yes, there were some gems. The part about parenting I liked. But as is the case with most of Holliday's recent interviews, I felt compelled to give him his own advice, "ego is the enemy." I'm of the opinion that he is full of himself, holier than now, that - to me - it detracts from his content. I've tried, but I just can't get on board with this guy when I hear him talk.

I'm halfway through Ryan's book and love that each chapter is short so that when you need that immediate shot in the arm, the book delivers. I'm so happy to hear two adults having a conversation about the connection and balance between rights/freedoms and responsibilities! It gives me hope for the future of humanity. So many people who have focused solely on their right to not be vaccinated are actually arguing that they have the right to infect others, but they haven't thought it through that far because they are so caught up in their ego and emotions. I've been waiting for the lawsuits to be files against individuals who put others' at risk just because they don't believe the science. It's exhausting being an adult these days. Much love!

Rich you've done a lot for the vegan movement and I have listened to many of your podcasts. As a fellow vegan I wanted to push back on this idea that it is somehow beautiful to own and enslave cows or any animals and treat them as property. They aren't 'cattle' or 'livestock', they are sentient beings who will be sent to be murdered. I was pretty stunned that you described enslaving and murdering animals that way. I have read many of Ryans books and found a lot of value in them. That aspect of his lifestyle and that lifestyle in general however, is antiquated, immoral and is destroying the planet. If I'm missing something let me know.

What you're missing is subtlety. People change their habits not by being attacked and shamed into doing so, but by presenting them with cheap and readily available alternatives. Over the past few years my diet has slowly changed to presently be about 60% from vegan sources, and it was not something I was aiming for deliberately but instead vegan options have become more available, tastier, more affordable. Remember that there is no such thing as objective morality and preaching that will rightfully earn you ridicule. I mean, one of the proofs of that is vegans who own pets and not feel cognitive dissonance about it.

Keep the job until you have a business up and running on the side. Makes more sense to save up and risk losing all of your source of income all at once. Take savings and build your business is the best escape route.

You also have to do what's smart. Quitting now, right before the end when you've come this far isn't smart. For starters having that on your resumé is a huge benefit and may open doors. Also like Drew said, you might as well do it for a while and build something else up on the side, or do a design course while you work. Having a trade to fall back on is valuable.

I may not ever get an opportunity for this message to reach Ryan but here goes nothing. Please, Mr. Holiday, allow a professional narrator to read your books into Audible. Please! I purchased Stillness Is the Key, which is a great book in itself, but I just managed to struggle through listening to it. I really want to listen to The Obstacle Is the Way but like the other one, narrated by yourself and therefore I will not listen to it, I just can't. Also, the reviews on the books. Dude, Ryan, please read the reviews as there is a resounding message going through them. If there's a negative word in the reviews it's always about your reading of the book. Sorry to say but you should not read your own book even though you want the message to come accross somewhat better or whatever the reason is. Please set aside your pride and listen to the listeners. I want to listen to this book but I know I won't be able to with yourself reading it.

Mostly really enjoyed this conversation - it was interesting and thought-provoking. Always appreciate your sensibility around nuance, Rich. Two things disturbed me - perhaps small things to others -(I almost never comment in any public way, so, for me, this is a courageous act): 1) I was surprised and disturbed to hear you, Rich, refer to the animals Ryan 'owns' as "cattle" and "livestock". This really struck me coming from you. I understand there are lots of different opinions around animals as food, but it felt cowardly to me that you so casually used these terms in the description of Ryan's home property. 2) The presumptions and assumptions existing in the statements around the v*rus and v*ccine and "liberty", etc. in Ryan's discussion (at several different times in the interview) were glaring; where is the nuance here? I sense the propaganda machine has been successful with you, too. :-(
