I even keep an extra thing of deodorant and a toothbrush at work in my locker/desk just in case. Some people just cannot understand that concept. They even look surprised that a mechanic/millwright would have a change of clothes at work, too. Apparently, they’ve never actually found themselves working and needing to remove oil soaked clothes after completing the job. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ricky has a mind of a troublemaker so he already knows exactly what to say to head off other troublemakers. Ricky also understands the difference between respect and compliance; Doing something when told to by the safetyman threatening write is compliance not respect, doing something even when the safety man isn’t looking because you don’t want to bring down his wrath is actual respect. Ricky understand you can’t just lead in with a write up because that just leaves the safetyman basically nowhere to escalate upwards. So when write ups are handed out like candy they mean basically nothing. That safety man deals with everything with writeups means that only is he short on tools to corral workers, but he also has no site cred; nobody is afraid the safety man is going to give him an ass whooping or do something that actually makes their life unpleasant. Find that with his limited tool set and everyone has it all figured out that putting up with his occasional interference and the odd write up is way more efficient than actually listening to him full-time. The way safetyman behaves also breeds contempt. Here’s another hardhat another guy in a safety vest strutting around acting like he has some sort of authority of God on earth amongst men giving them his divine commandments. Not only does he have like he’s better than everyone else he also doesn’t show any kind of respect or build a rapport. Nobody wants to do anything just to be a bro and nobody wants to help him out which means nobody is going to follow the safety guidelines just to make his life easier when it means making their job harder. At my old job while nobody really liked the safety man, nobody wanted to cause trouble with him. While soft-spoken he was also of that older generation mindset of if you gotta get up in someone’s face might as well bring your hands, too while you’re at it, He was basically nice and he would remember your name and ask what was going on with you. You come around to smoke some candies shower little bit you have handwarmers when it got cold and he bring around waters when it got hot. Also had a little bit of extra PPE in his truck so rather than interrupting your job to make you go hunt down wherever yours was he would just pass an extra pair of gloves or some safety glasses, saying he had you covered that time, emphasize in just the right way to let you know that was your warning and he’d remember it without having to Lord over you how he had done you such a big favor to not get you in trouble. So not only was he easy long to get with professionally and also took a fair amount of effort to get a write up from him, so if he actually got you in trouble over something, there was no question that you were deliberate about it and definitely deserved it. TL;DR: being less corporate and more creative would get the safetyman much better results.

I think this does highlight a key issue with safety meetings: Presentation. You don't need Peter Proper from the safety team gently reminding the guys what needs to be done, you need someone like Ricky giving an honest response to the stupidity they see. The site safety guy actually made me do the safety meeting one morning. It was on slips, trips, and falls. basic stuff. The guys knew it was gonna be a good one when i opened with "Alright, so Tom's making me give the safety meeting because i pissed him off. Since i got to pick the topic we're starting with how y'all idiots can't seem to stay standing upright while moving about the site. Buckle up, because unlike Tom, i'm willing to be honest with you." Both the fastest, and apparently most effective safety meeting that site had all winter. Sometimes you just gotta call people out when they're being an idiot about the basics.

That was probably more memorable by the crew than a guy reading notes off a clipboard. I don't know the environment so I can't say much else. It's part punishment, part training if you have the last violation that didn't end up in injury, or even one that was minor to show cause. I don't ever want anyone to lose their life, but if you can turn near misses into training opportunities, especially when it comes from those involved with the near miss, I think it really brings it home compared to regurgitation of some osha approved nonsense.

Cold weather is always a tricky one for me. Unless it's really cold, like below freezing weather, there's a good chance that just doing the job is going to warm my body up to where that heavy jacket I brought is too warm. But then it might start feeling too cold without the jacket, and I put it back on. And it goes in a cycle like that all day.
@khaoticpenguin3945

The key is to take off the jacket BEFORE you sweat. Sweat tricks the hell out of my body, I deliver restaurant products and shit so I'm in and out of the truck so I gotta somehow maintain a constant temp that isn't freezing but not warm either, it's a fine line.

The thing that makes your content so great is this sounds like the safety meeting at my job. Our safety guy didn't have a topic last week and did a did you know type meeting. My did you know was telling the nasty bastards to wash their hands after using the bathroom even though most are just setting in there on their phones.
