The original lyric highlighted an abyousive relationship with a narcissist who broke all the healthy boundaries she used to have (distinctly specific too). For those who experienced this, whether it in a form of being a people-pleaser or a pushover, or in an unhealthy relationship, this original lyric does rings true. Miley's version tells a different story, it's a story of how assymetrical contribution in relationship can cripple one side. In a situation where one person do everything to make it work, while the other is extremely aloof and nonchalant, that in itself is not a very healthy relationship. It shows lack of reciprocation and communication, or even support. It doesn't have to be narcissistic, but selfish all the same. Both are hurt, and both are right to feel hurt.

@@SFL934 luckily I did. I got great therapy, and I’m getting better. This person is not a good man. I saw the signs but you know how that goes. He’s not used to seeing a strong woman in his life and when he saw that I was willing to fight back knowing how strong he was, it scared him. I still find myself thinking about the good times but then I have to remember that the good times was the mask. I found safety in being single, in God, and with friends and family. I have more than he could take from me.

This song was painful in it's poetry. I left my abuser at the end of 2011 and I'm just now starting to unravel the emotional baggage they left me crippled under. I always suspected I had ptsd but having a doctor put into words the things I suspected but didn't want to believe is extra painful. I have a wonderful and supportive husband for nearly five years now - and I finally got up the courage to go to therapy because I love him so much I don't want MY trauma and triggers to ruin this beautiful thing we have. I have been married for 15 years with my husband for 16 years. I was with my ex for 5 years before that. For the first year together was truly not bad at all. We both were helping from our past relationships. Then the next 10 years of our marriage was just slowly soul sucking for me. I woke up and I did give my husband the ultimatum. That I was going to leave I couldn't do this to our children anymore. I should've separated just for our childrens sake. It did slowly improve but during our healing it was not pleasant at all for the next 3 years. Now for the last 3 years has been how are family should have been all along. We have apologized to each other and our children and really talked it all out. Has there been issues of course. So to put it all together it was 5+1+10+3+3=22 I did say 20 plus years for a reason. Just remember that we all may have been through similar situations but we all are different. So what one person's rock bottom will be different for another. I really am glad that it seems you have not been through what I have it seems just by your question. Because when you know, you know. I truly hope my children learn from my mistakes and will not repeat them.

This song finally makes sense - I never understood singing an anthem about loving so hard you ignore all boundaries and loose yourself within the relationship just to blame the lover for not being as toxically committed when things inevitably start falling apart. Can you share the source for the "original lyrics" thing? Because in Mozella's demo she sang the same lyrics as Miley in the end.

The week it was written was the week that Mozella was originally supposed to get married, but called it off. It was a collaboration of 3 people and they were writing with intent to sell the rights (originally to Beyonce but during that session Mozella decided that she would bring it to Miley) so it's anyone's guess when during that process they were changed and may have been changed during the session prior to finalizing a demo. But there are just some things that you can't find on Google, so who knows. The fact that Mozella was supposed to get married that week, and the fact that she had been in a toxic relationship can be found on Google though. True or not, it's a beautiful rendition
