With the ones from the middle east,they are living in an arid,hot climate. I notice most folks like to krep theirs in an enclosure that they spray with water,thus the humidity may be a bit much...the temperature may not be suitable and the fact that they probably get moisture from their prey...give them a much dryer area..AND..give them a larger living space.They are roamers at night.

In the wild, sun spiders aren't particularly short-lived as far as invertebrates go. I live in an area they are native to, although they are not common, and I used to leave the porch light on at night to see what sorts of interesting critters it would attract. The light would attract certain insects like moths which in turn attracted predators occasionally. Some of the predatory bugs were territorial and I'd see the same specimen return repeatedly over multiple months or even years in some cases. I remember seeing one particularly distinctive big camel spider on and off all year until the winter came which means they live at least as long as jumping spiders in the wild but in captivity, they tend to suffer FAR shorter life spans than jumpers which suggests captivity just kills them.

Honestly it could be that we're just still learning what they need to live out healthy lifespans in captivity. The reality is that the longer any given species is available in captivity, the longer their captive lifespan tends to get because keepers as a whole learn more about what does and doesn't work with them. Unfortunately that means species that have not been in captivity for a very long time tend to die earlier on than they otherwise would have, and while that sucks I think for a lot of species it is inevitable until we better understand their captive needs. That said, maybe as we keep these guys in captivity longer we will come to understand their needs better and more information on how to keep them healthy for longer periods of time will come available.

Since most solifuges are annuals, and brought into the hobby grown or near full grown, I don't think ethics enter into it. I've kept and bred a couple US species, captive hatched young from gravid import females and raised them, rarely had any live longer than a year, and those only by a couple weeks or a month. Many brumate 6 months a year, still die at a year. Someone below mentions heat as a factor with middle eastern/north African species, and this is true (as it is for US desert species)- there has to be a daily temperature cycle and a large enough cage and depth of substrate for temperature gradients. Some species like a damp hide (50% humidity) with a bone dry cage. Rocky Mountain species generally like it damper and cooler. Some require sand, some sandy loam, some forest soil, some clay soil. Having a knowledge of habitat helps extend their lives, but more than 12 months? Nah. So is it unethical to keep mantids? They only live a year, and often die in molt. Unethical to keep orb weavers? Annuals again. I have kept a variety of octopus species. The little blue ring octopuses top out at 9 months, you may extend that to a year with low temps. Most other species live 11-14 months no matter what you do. And no matter what you do, the last few days to weeks are sad and ugly as they get dementia. In the wild they'd be killed by a moray eel or other predator as soon as senescence sets in. Raise most beetles, eggs to grub to pupa to adult? Year, tops. The good that people can do if they keep records, disseminate info, bring awareness of the boundless diversity of life forms out there is endless. Bioclocks have no ethics. And like most inverts, 99% die before the age of reproduction in the wild, and are often busy killing EACHOTHER even then as we've both seen.
@amypanddirtytoo19263 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was wondering about that. If they die in captivity at the same time as they would in the wild, then there really isn't anything unethical about it. If they would live, like, 15 years in the wild and no one could keep them in captivity longer than a year then, yeah, maybe not so ethical to keep them. But at the end of the day I think people forget that tarantulas are the exception, not the rule. There are insects that have a 24 hr life cycle, a lot of arachnids one to two years.🤷
@amyesworldcatherinesminime79453 жыл бұрын
One could say sorter-lived animals are a good choice as pets, if their needs are met. They're less likely to suffer from a change in their human's circumstances. The human less likely to have the heartache of rehoming a beloved friend. And the human can learn about many different species by being a serial keeper. That's my intention. I have a mature male CB P. regius, and this week caught a juvenile Salticus scenicus on my windowsill. I'm considering a mantis when the inevitable happens to my older jumper.
@neonlights_123 жыл бұрын
Good comment. Another popular one that Kat even keeps is jumping spiders. They live a year or two max, very few people have gotten them to three years, and if you get one as an adult you can probably expect less than a year of time with it. That's just the nature of the critters, yet they're incredibly popular to keep as pets! It's just the nature of some creatures to be born, live, try to mate, and die, and if an experienced person wants to keep them to have something that most people don't because they ARE so short lived, I don't see a problem
@stevepalpatine28282 жыл бұрын
I found one in Arizona under my truck that I kept and I had it for well over a year, don't know if it was really young when I found it but I remember showing my cousin it two Thanksgivings in a row so it must have lived well over a year. I wonder how long they can live for.

There are so many animals, of all types, that just don't thrive in captivity no matter what you do. Or that do ok being kept in captivity but are impossible to breed. Most camel spiders do not live for very long around a year, maybe more if they hibernate. Some issues that can reduce their lifespan are: Humidity: they live in very dry to completely desertic enviroments. Mold: due to high humidity. Light: they don't like light, they are nocturnal. It stresses them out. Lack of space: in nature they are very active and move around a lot.

I don't know anything about them, but a quick search says their natural lifespan is one, max two years. So, like house spiders, or mice. If they lived one year in captivity, and ten in the wild, that would be bad, but if they only live one year anyway, is there an issue?
@btnhstillfire2 жыл бұрын
These need more space…Thats one of the issues right off the bat. They are extremely fast so they need room to be able to move around. If not they just sit there rotting away.
@steverick52813 жыл бұрын
Actually many years ago on the old arachnoboards site there was a lot of useful information on captive husbandry and they can live for years. From memory they do best when kept in a very small cage and if allowed to burrow, and hibernate over winter, also to not feed very much. If they have alot of room they can run themselves to death, and feeding them well increases their metabolism and kills them faster. People were keeping them in containers barely bigger than what a lot of Asian scorpion keepers keep their scorps in. I'm sure some species are more difficult than others but I hope something in this can be useful to you in the future or to help further your research.
