If it was truly about emissions, why not use the F33A engine (3.3 V6 TD) and remove one turbo? We had the 2.8 (with a camper on the back) for a weekend recently, got 4.3 km/l driving conservatively 🤡. Yes, on paper it has more power but bottom line is it’s a smaller engine working so much harder to do the same job. I certainly don’t expect to see many 1m km 70 series with this engine anymore…

Will be interesting to see how the 4 Cylinder's will handle bouncing off the limiter in low range all day in undergroind mining. Although the V8s are outclassed on paper by the 4 cylinder, they sure can cop some abuse.
@seanh32922 ай бұрын
Well the mine I work at the v8's are speed limited to 30km/h in 5th gear which is about 1250 rpm and 2500 rpm in 3rd. Doesn't work too well when the dpf clogs up once a shift so u have to knock it back to second and fang it up the decline at 3750 rpm for 5 to 10 min lol. Honestly I was looking forward to the 4 cyl because of the auto transmission tho.

Where else in the world (excluding the US) can you buy a V8 Cruiser? Why do people think its the Australian Government forcing this, when in every other market it is being discontinued as well?
@heathwak30302 ай бұрын
Where did you read that? Will they also discontinue the 1hz 6 cylinder in countries where it is still produced aswell?
@seekhearts2 ай бұрын
many reasons why its happened, ADR rules in 2018 by the government, homologating the manufacturing to thailand soon (i think it'll happen since thailand is such a big market for trucks/utes as well), plus the biggest buyers are fleets for mining, ag and defence/military especially in the middle east/africa, so being able to offer the trucks with engines they are continuing to develop and can streamline and boost deliveries

Sadly, Toyota's 4 bangers engines were not originally made for the high compressions that turbos make. There goes reliability.

That would not be economically viable for Toyota to do that.. They will run the piss ant 4cly engine in it for around 4 years. THEN, they'll put the v6 in and suck all the money out of the Toyota die hards fans all over again when they trade their shitty 4cyl 79's in. 😅😂😅😂😅

This information came out months ago at the time the current price for the 4 cylinder was listed at $120 thou, Toyota did say that the v8 will only remain in the single cab workmate Ute, as government and mining fleets still wanted this vehicle or has this suddenly changed, also no more information on the new land cruiser mini, using the same engine as the land cruiser 4 cylinder but a listing price of around $45 thou to compete with the jimny, as this is taking a bit chunk of the market Toyota finally don’t want to miss out on.

Very disappointing news. Seems Toyota doesn’t want to stay away from the crowd of automakers that are building downsize engines, with the corresponding reliability issues. Same with the 2022 Tundra and 2024 Tacoma that are having heavy reliability issues

I’m still coming to terms with who would want an automatic! Imagine had Toyota invested the same development into the V8 as opposed to a 4cyl. It’d have 6 or 7 hundred NM of torque. The death of the V8 is unfortunately due to emissions regulations :(

The V8 70 is fairly reliable due to it been as close to NA as possible, I do like the Touque from just off idle but this is mostly due to a tiny turbo so there isn't much going on beyond about 2500rpm. You could possibly get it to out-perform the factory 2.8 but you would need to sink about 30k into it (New Turbo, Clutch, Gearbox, injectors, muffler etc) and then you have lost the reliability as realistically this engine is only designed to handle 12psi. As factory or lightly modded this is a fun engine that sounds good and lasts quite well, but if you actually compare the 2 engines back-to-back the 2.8 is vastly superior. the 2.8 GD been in hiluxes in some form for over 7 years and the small issues it did have seem to have been ironed out, I'm not expecting huge reliability issues but i will miss the soundtrack!

A mob in Canada has the right idea. They are going to retro fit a diesel hybrid. Super efficient diesel genny for powering an all electric drive train and traction battery. Heaps of low down torque, plenty of high end power and easily pass Aussie emissions standards. Much better suited to huge Aussie distances with our piss poor EV charging infrastructure (or even electricity infrastructure tbh). These kinds are vehicles are bought by a lot of people who traverse the outback and sparsely serviced areas of this country so a beefy hybrid set up is a way to go.
