To add the insanity missing from that statement, I read yesterday that Musk is planning a "SpaceEx" option for the Tesla Roadster, which is getting a re-invention. Get ready. They use the back seat room to build in cool air jet engines, that will allow the car to hover. It's not just for crowd thrills, it's incorporated into the car's handling and should INCREASE acceleration (of the world's fastest production car) and benefit handling by being able to change the load to the road on demand. Someone said "give it wings and it will fly" or words to that effect and Musk said "probably". Next time a sixteen year old with a VR gaming rig, a vap-pen and a week old driving license says to dad, "Hey , can my friends and I take your new car for a "spin" you'd better say NO. They won't be able to tell reality from Star Wars.

@@TriviaChallenge a normal deisel, ie 140bhp 350nm torque, can get over 1000miles per tank and take 3 mins to fill. So I'm not that bothered about range. More interested in charge time. 300miles will do me, if it can be filled in around 10 mins, any energy station. for home daily (overnight) charging a slower cycle, is fine for me, and a 200mile range wousl cover most of what Id need. However if range is what you need, this means you do many miles a day, so this is where I'd say charge time is greater than super late ranges. My petrol car atm only does 350miles per tank, so if your EV an do 400, and charge in the tiem it takes to drink an over priced coffee, that is when the ice is all but dead. Tbh 90% of peopel could live with a 150mile range and night charging, it's all about edutating people on what they actually need, and that the EV would be fine. We drive to France or Spain twice a year, bit I'd be happy to have an EV and just hire a diesel when needed. However I live in a location I can't park close to my house. So I can't charge. So no EV for me. Also I just got a new car, in November.

Ryukachoo - Glad you mentioned gas prices: every time petrol prices rise, SUV and pickup sales take a dive. The high oil prices around 2005 was the thing that ultimately doomed GM. They bet the farm on land yachts and had nothing to sell when people stopped buying them. Could you imagine having a business that depends on the price of a (heavily manipulated ) commodity from unstable, terrorist-funding regions? Automakers should be cheering the arrival of EVs, and so should every patriotic American.

Gonna be alot of overtime if you run out of batteries with a load of equipment and it takes hours to charge for it to be mobile again. Plus electrics already have major heat issues, either with the batteries or with the motors. I wouldn't trust them to reliably pull the amount of load they're claiming. Look up issues with Tesla's and other EVs and you'll see this whole electric is more reliable BS is just that. Most EVs won't make it to 100,000 miles without a new battery pack which is often the most expensive thing in the car. For a Tesla that's at least 6,000$ plus installation. For this probably more still. Not knocking what you want, but an electric truck won't be ready for actual work duty for some time. This is for suburban dad's to put their kids bicycles in, not much more.

About 2 weeks later Elon announced that he is very excited about Tesla truck and that he has put it as a priority. Obviously Rivian made enough of an impression that Tesla pushed up the timeline. Based on Elon's tweet he put the Model 3 ramp, solar roof "big news at the time, Model Y and the truck both at around the same timeline then the Roadster. Still charging is going to be an issue and Tesla has a massive lead and I don't see anyone really stepping up to bring a huge number or chargers to match Tesla. Brilliant!! Rivian deserves to succeed. No range anxiety with 400+ mile range, 0 to 60 mph in 3 sec, 7-seater with leg-room in mind for the 3 row. Well, thought-through features and design. Measurements in metric as they should be!

Also... Untill I see quite a few independent tests on 10k being towed by an electric truck in the heat of summer all i see this as is a short range tow vehicle . And if Rivian in fact teams with Ford who is known for buit in breakdowns just after the warranty expires; Ford based on historical facts (GM not excluded and Nissan has recently adopted), I fear will do no favor to any electric company or the true potential and reliability of the technology....might I sugest a governing agency based on the American W. Edward Demings theories and teachings on TQM for electric vehicles to prevent that stragety that unfortunately North American company's have mastered.

Fantastic! I'm a rancher in the Northern Rockies. We have a dozen ICE 4WD vehicles with 60,000 to nearly half a million miles on them. RAM, Ford, Toyota, old Dodge water trucks, you name it. Operating conditions range from 100+ degrees F to 20 below zero. It was -13 F earlier this this week. Maintenance all the time. Dust, mud, snow, ice. If you build it and it can operate effectively in that temperature range, has excellent traction, and won't fall apart, I'll buy one.

Till the battery charging or swapping time gets brought way down the ice powered, or at least ice boosted(hybrids) wont be going anywhere. But yes for 95+% of people and for 95+% of their driving an EV would be a better option, hell that is why my daily is the cmax not the f250. I am trying to go all ev or hybrid but when you have a big old trailer pushing the 10K lbs mark, and have to move it 1000 miles in a day, EV's even this very cool and high on my want list ones, just dont fill that very niece need.

@Chuck O it isnt just so easy to just amp it up. The battery would expensive and really would have a low life of 1 or 2 years. 250kw for 100kw is atleast 3c. 1c or less charging is best for long life.

I can't get over how friggin pretty that SUV is, dream car! So much attention to detail and so much in that interview that blows me away. The torque is what?!? Each wheel has its own motor?!? The panoramic sunroof is electrochromatic?! Real wood?!?! And the pickup! The size of that frunk!?!? Electronically closing hood?! GEAR TUNNEL!?!? They casually did a trick at the end where the roof rack come off and attached to the bed. Sheesh. If there wasn't a market for EVs in this size/type these guys will be creating it, cause as soon as these are on the road it's going to inspire a lot of vehicle envy.

Anybody know if there will be a Single Cab Version?? :O I'm one of few in the UK with a Pickup Truck (Ford Ranger TDCI 2009) & have been interested in EV's for many years, unfortunately I am quite fussy when it comes vehicle styles (e.g. Small Electric Single Cab Pickup or Campervan wanted) & my budget is on the low side. :( It's definitely looking promising for EV options in the coming years (Rivian & VW ID range being my favourites so far) although I still fear that I will end up being one of the last to ditch my dirty Diesel Truck for an affordable EV suitible for myself. :( I hope to see more Fully Charged episodes focused on DIY EV builds in the future as I am a keen Builder/Engineer & feel that a DIY EV project would be the fastest & most affordable way for me to finally own an EV! Thanks for another great episode Fully Charged, keep up the good work! (See you again at Fully Charged Live!! Sorry for the essay) ;D

I'm in exactly the same boat as you Dan. I want a camper (anywhere in the Expert to Master size range). And I don't mind if I have to make it myself. I reckon a master ZE plus a tesla pack is currently the most plausible route to a sufficiently useful vehicle, but integration is difficult as the manfacturers are not co-operating on such things. And it'll always be a compromise in comparison to something actually designed for a 150+ kWh batt (weight, battery space etc). It seems quite likely that one could put in a lot of effort to get it working about the same time something commercial comes out that is rather better and not _that_ much more expensive. We shall see.

I'm so glad to be alive in this era to see electric and solar cars take off. What a blessing each day to learn and see what the future is bringing us. I just wish with all this technology human lives improved and wars stopped. I wish medicine was as advanced as cars and smartphones where it actually solves problems than band-aid the problems.

This looks and sounds like an incredible vehicle. I'm surprised that they don't make the roof all solar panels so that the vehicle can charge during the day and while parked.
@bmos02
@bmos02 6 жыл бұрын
The cost doesn't really make it worth it. All the panels on my house (much larger footprint than a truck/suv roof by a huge margin) would charge a 100kwh battery pack in 3 days. These vehicles use a LOT of power so attempting to regain charge via a solar array that small would be so small you might not even notice a difference. And for that minimal efficiency gain you also lose your sunroof(s). Hopefully someday they can improve efficiencies to make that a reality, it would be very cool.

@@bmos02 still if you go on long hike in the mountains it would be nice that your car gets 30% back in 3 days :) as there is no charger in wilderness, not to mention it would keep the battery unloaded and on optimal temperature in sunny winter days, keeping it ice and snow free with heaters over the panels too + if power is peak it could track your gps location from time to time and start preparing car when you get in the range of 5km or less

@@RoadTripTravel well, this is assuming the panels are rigid, traditional photovoltaic units. It is possible to deploy flexible fabric photovoltaics and in the future, you could unfurl an array that could charge the vehicle. Or, if you had a tent made with the material, the tent(s) could contribute their energy on a camping trip to charge...just some blue sky potential ^_^

I just love this double cab pickup. My dream vehicle. I don't need that acceleration but that torque I could die for. With a roll cage to support a full-length roof rack, a lockable weatherproof steel canopy for the back. Highlift jack points, a bull bar, wires to protect the windscreen from branches. Perfect for Africa. Would I need a winch, perhaps not. And, by the way, that access door behind the rear seats is not unique. I have them on my 130 Land Rover but they are crude compared to what Rivian has achieved. A RHD version for Anglophone Africa PLEASE. Thumbs up guys, simply brilliant attention to detail.
