Great video. Regarding the gap opening in the side of the seat, if Rivian has seat profiles like Tesla, you usually set your seat to go to the bottom setting for exiting the vehicle, so when the door is open, the gap is closed. And it only opens when you're in it to drive.

I've done hobbiest level woodworking for decades and have even done some wood bending. I really found the talk on the driver side wood trim to be fascinating. I probably wouldn't have noticed it if it had not been mentioned. The movement of the grain doesn't really bother me (I"m not that OCD) but the rough surfaces and that broken edge are going to catch my attention. Maybe Rivian gets that corrected before I take delivery of my order. I doubt I'll get my truck before the end of the year.
@mikedx27062 жыл бұрын
Why didn't Rivian address the rough wood surface by sanding it smooth or giving it a coat of urethane or something else to provide a smooth surface?
@slamsandwich892 жыл бұрын
@@mikedx2706 I've felt the wood trim and my first thought was "rugged" and that it was a good reminder that it was not a luxury vehicle but a luxury adventure vehicle. I think it comes down to personal opinion but I felt it was a good fit for this truck.

As a product designer myself, heavily involved in the DfM and Manufacturing as well, I am really excited watching Carl and Sue analyzing parts. Just one question, the "wood" part on the IP, is it really wood or in-mold, water-transferred texture? If I am not wrong, if it was solid wood, there would not be these deformations on the wood grain.

Wow , cool overview , Sue and Karl have a great vibe about them , it's like a honest vibe mixed with no-nonsense integrity , makes you feel relaxed , well for one I think the rivian interior look cool , feels like it's rugged and luxurious at the same time. Top marks to whom ever designed the seat , it makes the vehicle. The expandable door bin side panel is a nice touch. Some how with both Sue and Karl the vehicle seems cramped to get into and out of. Looks like a big guy is going to be banging up against the door pillar alot as he gets in and out. The lack of a glove box is a curious omission , would be interesting to see in the teardown what's going on behind there. Seems to be a lack of holders for pens and small hand tools and a dash top cuppy for invoice books and other quick to reach everyday items. Looking forward to seeing more rivian secrets.

This is why you hire an outsider 3rd party company to challenge your companies perceptions. On large scale manufacturing, every penny spent making sure to get it right first time on R&D, is worth every dollar you save over and over again. Rivian might not agree with all the ideas or criticisms but it doesn’t take a lot of golden ideas to make it worth the cost of hiring these guys. Love the vids!

It would be interesting to find out the cost of placing all these layers of complexity. Looks great but what does it cost the manufacture to produce. For the price of the vehicle I think they are under charging for the quality but could dumb down the look a little to save some costs overall. Great in depth guys.

Very well done. I sincerely appreciate the logical, objective approach. I have one of these on order - and my "first mile drive" is this Friday. I will be noticing the details that you have highlighted in this video. It does seem odd that for an "adventure" vehicle - you would have fabric in areas of high use (e.g., map pocket on door). 9:57 when the EU went to town with car manufacturers about the end of life recycling of vehicles, VW went from the worst, using 22 or 24 different materials that made up a dashboard to 3 or 4 pieces and added to that the different materials were all designed to make taking apart and lot more efficient for recycling - also in the original 22 or 24 lists were materials used that where hard to impossible to recycle as well (there is a video on the internet explaining this)... maybe American car manufactures need to be taken to task and forced to make better cars?

Interesting discussion! When you work in across department teams you can see their output reflecting the relative power of the various departments. Clearly the designers were in charge at Rivian! This doesn't bode well for mass production assembly times and shows that low Rivian production rates aren't completely supply chain driven.

What’s the black circular plug on the lower b-Pillar towards the very end of the video? Is that for the door to interface/hook into in the event of a side crash? I know bmw did that with some earlier models from the late 90s which allowed the entire side to “unitize” in a side crash to spread the load-the hooks would mark where the tubular bars inside the door ended. Or is that just a plug of sorts? Couldn’t see if the door had any protrusions in that spot.
