Very nice Bob! Your imagination and creativity have no bounds! Amazingly I have orders for pens and shaving brushes but when I get some me time I'm going to steal your idea and combine it with Zac Higgins worthless wood idea. I will drill 6-8mm holes, fill with different color resins and cure in a pressure pot. It should make a very nice and unique polka dot pen for one of the nurses at work. Maybe I'll even do a video. Hit the post button to soon. I got a transmission installed just right then took a piece of scrap wood about the size of a pen blank and cut a notch in it so it would go around the pen slightly. I then cut it to length so it was the same length as the lower barrel measuring from the end of the nib to the end of the transmission. Now when I press the transmission in I hold the wood up against the barrel and prepare in the transmission. Pen press hits the wood and stops at the perfect length every time. Works for any pen using this transmission. Enjoy your videos and usually lean something from all.

Yes, Cut a scrap at a 45 degree angle and place the pen on that to drill. You’ll really have to hold it tight but it works. Regards, Bob

I'll bet Yellow Heart or Osage Orange with a tan wood for the dots would look amazing and could be called a giraffe pen if you drew the center line then staggered the dowels for effect. Very cool idea. And wait until you see my next video. The pen is done and I'm editing now. Once the newness wears off this one I'll release it. It is a really cool pattern using more scraps. Just getting into the craft and really enjoy watching your video's and learning a lot. Was wondering if you had a video on your lathe and your cutting tools. Reason I am asking is I am looking to buy a lathe and accessories, but there is so much out there can't decide on what would be good for turning pens. I believe I heard you say that you had a lathe from harbor freight. if so how do you like it. Also what cutting tools do you use. Really like the pens you make, looks sharp.

What you need for pen turning. Welcome to the Dark Side, turning is a blast. If I were starting over again, I would probably go with the Easy Wood Carbide tools. There is a set with a square cutter, round cutter, and a diamond shaped detail cutter. These tools are fairly easy to master and when they get dull, you just replace the cutters, no learning to sharpen or expensive sharpening systems. I'm going to assume you want to start with ink pens and tell you what you need for that. When you purchase a pen kit, the seller will tell you what bushings and what size drill bit you will need to make that pen. Bushings can be used over-and-over and bits only need to be purchased once. The first pen is expensive due to this overhead. Medium C/A glue, or Epoxy for gluing tubes into Acrylics blanks. Both work on wood too. You do not need a Pen Insertion tool, you can use a screw driver. They are nice to have but not a necessity. Purchase a barrel trimmer set with the four most common sizes: 7mm, 8mm, 3/8", and 10mm. This is a must have. You will need a mandrel, I personally like the Mandrel Saver setup that Penn State sells. A mandrel is a must have. For Acrylics, the easiest was to an amazing finish is Micro Mesh pads. Sand paper is to coarse for Acrylics and should be reserved for wood. Get a box with 4 or 5 different grits. You will need a finish for your pens. Finish for Acrylics: I like Hut Ultra Gloss. It's quick and the results are great. Finish for wood: Thin C/A is my favorite. Shella Way is nice for beginners, as is Hut Friction Polish. C/A is the toughest to master but looks the best and lasts the longest. A pen press is nice to have. You can use a clamp or the lathe to press your pens together. Laney Shaughnessy has a video on his channel that shows how to build one. It's really good. Otherwise, purchasing a press can be expensive. I do have a HF lathe, it's been great for pen turning but doesn't have the power to turn anything larger. I think it's a good starter and the price is right. That is pretty much everything I can think of. I hope this helps. Regards, Bob

"WoodNWhimsies" shows a unique way to make an oversized pen from a slimline kit. He uses a piece of an acrylic blank, but I don't see why any turning blank couldn't be used. I'm going to assume you want to start with ink pens and tell you what you need for that. When you purchase a pen kit, the seller will tell you what bushings and what size drill bit you will need to make that pen. Bushings can be used over-and-over and bits only need to be purchased once. The first pen is expensive due to this overhead. Medium C/A glue, or Epoxy for gluing tubes into Acrylics blanks. Both work on wood too. You do not need a Pen Insertion tool, you can use a screw driver. They are nice to have but not a necessity. Purchase a barrel trimmer set with the four most common sizes: 7mm, 8mm, 3/8", and 10mm. This is a must have. You will need a mandrel, I personally like the Mandrel Saver setup that Penn State sells. A mandrel is a must have. For Acrylics, the easiest was to an amazing finish is Micro Mesh pads. Sand paper is to coarse for Acrylics and should be reserved for wood. Get a box with 4 or 5 different grits.

+blksab406 You will need a finish for your pens. Finish for Acrylics: I like Hut Ultra Gloss. It's quick and the results are great. Finish for wood: Thin C/A is my favorite. Shella Way is nice for beginners, as is Hut Friction Polish. C/A is the toughest to master but looks the best and lasts the longest. A pen press is nice to have. You can use a clamp or the lathe to press your pens together. Laney Shaughnessy has a video on his channel that shows how to build one. It's really good. I have since watched a few videos where you discussed different finishes you have tried. It sounds like the triple E and the Shellawax are great for wood and I have also seen the CA finish glue used on Acrylic. What would you recommend for a good lathe to start with, I believe you use I Ryobi Mini in some of your videos?

+Rich Ukulele if you're referring to a pen mandrel it's usually a tapered piece that fits inside a hole on the headstock. There are also pen mandrels that screw onto the threads of the headstock. Regards, Bob

I've seen and heard it in a lot of videos but never explained, so i am assuming "barrel trimming" is just cutting the blank till it is flush with the tube, and not cutting the tube it's self?

+Shaun Kennedy Hello Shaun, You are correct. It can be accomplished with a battle trimmer or on a sander. You want to be as careful as you can not to remove any of the tube because it changes the length of the pen and it will not look right when assembled. +Mike Yow Thank you Mike, I use the painters tape because the C/A will occasionally soak through the paper towels and stick them to my finger. The tape protects me and peels right off. I use the Wolverine sharpening system from One Way. I got mine at Craft Supply but Woodcraft also sells them. Regards, Bob

hey Darren, I really don't mean to butt-in but when I started turning pens I bought a pen pal mini lathe from penn stste not to say it is the know all end all but it is basically made just for pens and small spindles I have used it for years and still use it for my pens , I use my larger lathe for larger projects

I notice that you use CA glue as a finish. I have tried this and the glue doesn't dry for hours. Does it have a short shelf life, I have had it for about a year and only just started to use it, Any help would be appreciated.
