I own a 2015 Genesis 3.8 with 52K on it. Except for 1 minor recall, this car is amazing. Drove all over the US on all road conditions and no issues at all. This is one RELIABLE and VERY SOLID car with all the Luxury available.

"Powertrain is not quite as refined as it's German competitors." Bet you it's waaay more reliable than they are! And that will likely be a key selling point.

I disagree. In this class, buyers buy their luxury cars to keep it just for 3 to 4 years at most while they are still in the warranty. After that they are still reliable, but maintenance costs are higher. In return you get a much more refined ride and brand recognition, that Genesis just don't have. Maybe with time, but it will be at least 10 years for them to be on par with the Germans.

the trans does require a 300 dollar service every 40k miles so all that is probably just lack of maintenance .

Being the owner of two Sonatas (11' SE Turbo and 12' Limited Turbo) and currently an Optima SX Turbo, I would definitely buy it if I were in the market for an executive full size sedan. I prefer to wait for the Korean version of the G80 to hit US shores. All three of the Hyundai products I've owned were reliable with the exception of a turbo malfunction of the '11. It was fixed under warranty and I had no more problems. Kia is now #1 in initial quality and Hyundai is #3. This is based off of problems per 100 vehicles sold. Mercedes didn't make the top 10 unfortunately. Hyundai is raising the bar as we speak.

I have driven the Gensis (previous badge for the G80) and been in or driven an XF (not the very latest one), a 5 series and E class (not the recently released one). The Gensis was cheaper, better equiped, much more roomier and and more comfortable (though 5 series and E classes do come with different suspension tunes and seat combinations). I think those who choose one of the Germans over the Gensis would in many cases have been badge snobs

In keeping with the cooking theme, it looks like to me Hyundai designers took turns adding their favorite ingredients. BMW interior, Mercedes back end, Audi front end, and a Chrysler logo to top it off. They ended up with a peanut butter and tuna fish sandwich in a pita pocket.

funny thing about that: look at BMW, Mercedes, and Audi: do any of them look like anything special? No, if anything they all look bland. To me, the G90 actually has more presents with its aggressive front end and broad Rolls-esque stance.

@MikeL-FL
@MikeL-FL 8 жыл бұрын
Sorry, don't think I could make the jump. As a former 750Li owner, this is missing something. Something important in the full size luxury class...... excess. Excess power, excess space. Even the V8 lacks the power of the Germans base V8s, and can't even come close to their upgraded ones. And the rear seat is puny compared to the LWB Germans as well, which are all we get in the US. Sure, it's cheaper, but if it's lacking, who cares? This car is desperately in need of a LWB version and a pair of turbos on the V8. Until it gets both, it's an Infiniti, Lexus and Acura competitor, not the BMW, Benz, Audi one they were trying to build.

I don’t think that comparing Genesis to Lexus when it first started is very fair. I say this because, Lexus had an unlimited amount of money to play with, to create a totally bespoke and new car ( LS 400 ). and genesis didn’t have that. They had to work on a budget. I do give props to them for effort though. And that’s coming from a Lexus fan.

no, if immaculate "detail" matters to you, the shadow gives the optical illusion of the "fitment" youre talking about. Again, spend a minute looking at the panel and telling the difference of the shadow and reflection that causes it. I can give you another video that showss the alignment of the "fitment" pretty professionally.

Its a good step forward but if I remember right volkswagen came up with a $60k luxury model, the phaeton, beautifully built car, great attention to details, very reliable, infact only reliable vw ever if you ask me, could have been an entry level bentley but people had issues shelling out that kind of money on a car with a vw badge. Reliability alone may not keep it in the market there has to be more passion, better drive train because if I am spending that kind of money on a car based on reliability alone I'd get bored easily besides they have the lexus to contend with if reliability is the main consideration.A $60k plus hyundai? well like the zen master said "we'll see"

Genesis Motors is the new premium brand from Hyundai. As we all know, the cost of establishing a new dealer network is prohibitively expensive. Tesla, being the front runner of innovation, cuts out the dealer-franchise network completely to fully control the end-to-end customer experience, as well as, reduces all sorts of cost and barriers relating to establishing a new dealership network. I think Hyundai can take a hybrid approach by utilizing existing Hyundai dealership network for inventory and maintenance of Genesis cars, meanwhile similar to Tesla, establish showrooms in malls to display and provide test drives for its vehicles. By taking this hybrid approach, Genesis Motors can effectively differentiate its brand, products, and service from Hyundai. Unlike Tesla, this hybrid model, which includes the existing Hyundai dealerships, would likely(I am not familiar with legal issues) prevent Genesis Motors from all sorts of legal problems.

One problem, this $80K is still serviced by the same mechanic who works on Hyundai Accents and other low end cars. Hyundai is also known for nickle and diming their customers on service and warranty. Would I trust my $80K car being driven by a minimum wage car jockey,?Who more than likely would be cranking up the radio and punching that gas pedal thru the floor ? If Hyundai wants to pitch high end, then they should open Genesis dealerships with the same post sales service available from Lexus, MERC, BMW, Audi, etc. For now Genesis is just lipstick and mascara, with absolutely no adequate post sales service support !

A lot of people are comparing genesis to lexus, but there are crucial differences you'd think seasoned pros like motorweek would pick up on. The Ls400 that Lexus launched with vs the G90 both draw heavily from they're European luxury counterparts of their day, but the Lexus was smoother and quieter, the engine was smooth, efficient, and 5x more reliable then a Mercedes. Like they said, the G90's power train isn't anything special.
@jlcii
@jlcii 8 жыл бұрын
They never said the powertrain wasn't anything special, they said it wasn't as refined. And to be fair, they tested the new TT V6, not the already established and more refined 5.0 V8 thats avail.

Subaru more reliable?? Not with those known bad head gasket problem and failed turbochargers that cost thousands to fix. and from personal experience, I would much rather have Hyundai or a Kia any day over a Toyota.
@jlcii
@jlcii 8 жыл бұрын
someone needs to get their facts straight if they think kias and Hyundais are unreliable. They're actually ranking higher in initial quality right now than Subaru is according to Consumer Reports, and they've been known for being solid cars for a while now. if Subaru has improved, then it is a recent scenario. Hyundai has been topping the quality board for years. That "bullsh*t" is documented.

How is it you have an issue with this being a Hyundai, which now is a very high-end in quality automaker, but an Audi being a glorified Volkswagen doesn't bother you? If anything, Volkswagens have been more known for quality issues than Hyundai has been for quite some time now. And at least this is built on an actual rear drive chassis; an Audi A8 is essentially a front wheel drive car with all-wheel drive employed on it.

Funny, the 'luxury' class of cars to me are pretty much the most boring to look at. Tech is all there mind you, but styling is usually so 'big car' banal. And personally, for me, wood paneling, even simulated, is even worse. I don't want to feel like I'm driving a fine piece of furniture, I want to feel like I'm flying a space ship. Gimme carbon fiber over wood motif any day. Having said that, awesome car, Hyundai's basically 'up there' now doing what they do 'down here' - top tier features/safety/style etc etc at a little lower price point.

Goodness I can't stand these journalist noobs obsession with Merc, BMW, and Audi. No vehicular compliment is complete without them throwing in "but it's not as good as it's German competitors". For heavens sake Hyundai is trying to build a $100,000 car on $70,000 car budget, cut some slack! Lexus had the same problem but I see they're starting to abandon the bargain aspect and are electing to just stick it to the bloody Germans punch for punch. The LC for example is over $90,000 and I would buy it over all it's German rivals. Same with the upcoming LS which appears to say fack this bargain charade, I'm just gonna be the best large Lexus sedan I can be. When Genesis gets some traction and start to attack the Germans punch for lunch I'm gonna be watching with the biggest grin on my face. Not that I don't like some German products (M3 please). But anyone who has owned one a product of the "German Big 3" would tell you that all the glitters aren't gold and while the highs are high, the lows are incredibly low.
