It may be that their blood was originally blue, but the constant exposure to the Argen energy suffered by males turned their blood and flesh red. I know it sounds stupid and it's not based on anything but it's the only thing I could think of.

I unfortunately got the impression that these demons are doggos who fought for the humans. Think about it. Dogs have insane prey drive, just like the pain elemental. They would have fought hard to the very end due to their loyalty. They give live birth. More males would be used in combat, thus the dimorphism and the disparity in punishment. Thats fucked, our good boys were such good boys they got turned into bad boys.

At 5:16 you can see that under the skin he has spikes petruding on top of the eyeball identical to the spikes the cacodemon has on top of his eye. Sir_ Deadlock The cacodemon never needs arms. The bite covers enough space to render grabbing useless and live in a swamp (Slough is the word used in the codex) so they aren’t throwing anything.

The Pain Elemental has an equally big if not bigger mouth than the Cacaodemon (still assuming same species here) yet still has arms. It throws lost spirits sure, but can also spit them just as effectively. So why is the Cacaodemon not given arms? Imagine if someone was on its head, arms would be really useful in that situation. XD

Sir_ Deadlock Now thinking about that, hell probably left the cacodemons as dregs hunting in swamps so they never evolved further. Horns are also common in more powerful demons such as the Marauder, Baron, Tyrant, and even the Titans so they might be a sign of rank or power rather than practicality so the Pain Elementals probably have theirs for their work. Cacodemons have no work so they stopped evolving and never grew to the same power as Pain Elementals.

The male/female thing explains, two things, the horns on the pain elemental, as with alot of the animals on Earth, the male usually only have horns, two, the reason there aren't as many pain elementals is because they fought and lost numbers before they were conquered, so the are more caocao demons than pain elementals

I suppose this proves my theory that even as former humans/conquered species, this is part of their punishment in hell, their own bodies cause them suffering and what not. As a kickstarter to one on the new Mancubus, the Art of DOOM Eternal book says that the ones in this game are from a totally different region of hell than the ones in 2016, discovered to not have the naturally occurring weaponry and armour. The Revenant is still a man made demon, as well as the Arachnotron. There was a mass over running and breakout of the Arachnotron making labs, and the automated manufacturing of these demons is still continuous.

I was going to throw in the idea that these things evolved from ambush hunters. They have massive mouthes, huge bite force, but are incredibly slow. Then further they more defensive things on top than bottom, and clearly function in one direction. If you come from behind on one of them then it can't see you worth anything.

Fun fact: Despite what many movies and books tend to depict, there are very rare documented examples of women and children being evacuated during combat situations. That is because even if they don't participate in the act of doing the ouchies to other human beings, they are still useful to carry ammo/arrows, carry away and tend to the wounded, relaying messages, preparing food and cooking bandages and many other tasks you don't want to lower your number of combat ready personnel for. In the worst case they can always be drafted into fighting or depending on the regime and time, be used as bait or entertainment.

When I first played Doom2, I assumed that Pain Elementals were the females of Cacodemons (even though they were called "guys" in the manual), and that Lost Souls were a juvenile form of the species, which eventually lost one eye and relocated the other, more or less as the sole do. The khan Makyr herself says that she would spare humanity so that it could 'repent' (serve the makyrs). Due to this, I believe that the legions of hell don't necessarily wipe out entire species, only enough to make them desperate for salvation. Then they leave them alone for another thousand years or so, before they attack again as part of a systematic cycle of endless soul harvesting. It's how I explain to myself why hell hasn't been depleted yet, meaning the demons you fight could be anywhere from millions of years old to freshly made.

Can you make a video about the Xenomorphs from the Alien franchise? And the Yautja from the Predator franchise? The creators based the Xenomorph life cycle on the tarantula hawk wasp and they are probably not carbon-based due to their blood. But that's about as much as I can figure out. Also, great video. I've had similar ideas for a while about the Cacodemons being from the same planet as the Pain Elementals.

Something that also helps with this is that the original Pain Elemental was a hybrid of different demons, but it's body, that main piece of it's anatomy is just a recolor of the Cacodemon with some graphical cleanups to remove a lot of it's spikes. It's most apparent from the back, as both demon's back sprites have the...Caco holes...in the same spot.

What it looks like to me is that pinkies would be dominant females assuming cacodemons are descendents, and it would make sense since the cacodemon is very aggressive and brutal as the pain elemental does more passive work(creating souls) as opposed to offense(biting and using its own weapons like caco’s electric balls) except for fighting other males. Also it does not actively pursue you for close range dismembering and just prefers LOS to throw lost souls

Roanoke Gaming another thing that would support the idea of the Pain Elemental being the male of the species, would be their horns. Bulls have large horns while (some) females have smaller horns. This could be a similar to how the Pain Elemental has those huge ass horns, while the Cacodemons have a multitude of small horns. Another thing that could link the two together, is what you said about the Summoners, Imps, and Hell Knights. perhaps there's an unseen juvenile stage, and the females become Cacodemons, while the males become Pain Elementals (Or when the Cacodemons reproduce, the daughters are left alone to grow up, while the males are thrown into the sweatshops) but hey, those are my few ideas on the Cacodemon/Pain Elemental connection, they could just be a species with a common ancestor that split, and while one was more "Passive" the other was more aggressive.

I don't think cacos and pain elementals are the same species. The codex says cacodemons are descended from cyclopic titans. I think that the cacos evolved from the titans and that the pain elementals are an offshoot from them, in a similar way prowlers may be imp offshoots

You should do the electric spiders from Metro Exodus's 2nd DLC "Sam's Story". Or the batwing, they'd probably be short considering you've done spider bugs and the demon but explaining their unique abilities from a biological perspective might be interesting.
