Hi. For building finger rebound, I find it helps to try to do it on a non-reactive surface. A pillow, or rolled up coat, something that isn't going to do the work for you. Therefore any bounce produced, is by the fingers alone. Helps to build the muscles in the two secondary fingers, as these are naturally weaker than the other two and thumb.

Best 16th notes on the hi-hat video I've ever watched, and I watched many. I've been struggling with this for months, couldn't break the 77 BPM barrier. This video sorted it out for me in a few minutes! I just wish I saw it earlier...

Nate Smith likes to sneak an open hi hat stomp in between beats every now and then too. It's a great trick to take some pressure off your right hand and also let's you reset yourself in the groove. Great lesson ... thanks, Rob!

Hey Rob, just wanted to thank you for your clear, direct and upbeat teaching style. I agree with some other comments that the slow motion video and the side angle really helped demonstrate the mechanics being used. This technique has been a game changer for me, and is improving other areas of playing including hand speed, a heightened sense of the nuances in my grip, and other things like the 4-stroke ruff.... There's so much bleed over in everything we practice in drumming, it's really empowering. So, again...THANK YOU!!!

After studying along with Stick Control and other technique-building books, I was sure it was all in the fingers - I was so wrong! When videos started becoming popular (yes, I'm old), I noticed how Ringo used a Left-to-Right motion with his right-hand on the HH whenever he had to play fast straight or shuffle grooves. Now Ringo's never been known as a technical wizard but this was an eye-opening experience for me! I never felt comfortable using the same motion as Ringo, I ended up using the same approach as you - either way, excellent video (as always) Rob - your tutorials are killer!
