I was called out by a lady a couple of months ago over here in Ireland. She has bees in the wall of her house and has for about six years. She thought they were swarming, no another colony were trying to rob them out. Absolutely thousands flying fighting. It was some sight.

I have no idea the origin of the robber bees, but judging from the number of them, there are a lot of hives in the area. I have fallen in love with what you do and would love to have a hive or two some day, but being a disabled wheelchair user with things being rough health wise right now I think volunteering will be my best route. The robber bees always are packing a pistol on their side and are wearing a mask over their eyes. The only real way is by their behavior, a hive bee will only enter the hive from the original entrance and they don't act nervous on the comb. Looks as though you were required to call in some reinforcements this fantastic Friday morning Mr. Ed! Bringing along those big guns sure kept Good Time Charlie well contained and on point! Has the intersection of a supermoon and a passing by comet caused the fishing action to slack off? One theme I find in common among the several bee keepers I tend to follow is the amount a great care put out by all of you. On this removal, do you happen to have any idea of where those robber bees came from? Hope all of you have a wonderful mid-October weekend!! -Bob...
@JeffHorchoff2 ай бұрын
As you well know, mostly it's just me and Charlie doing the removals, and Charlie's job it to video, so that leaves me to do a great deal. It's always a blessing to have the extra hands and with Muscle Man Bryan there, it's like having 4 extra hands. I'm hoping to have Wreck it Ralph help out this weekend so stay tuned for that adventure. Regardless of the moon's phase or meteorologic activity, Charlie is still fishing almost daily unless I reserve his skills a few days in advance like this day. I have no idea where the bees came from as it is a very rural area, but regardless of their origin, it certainly was a lot of them. This would make an ideal spot for swarm traps in the spring. Thanks for watching. God's peace Bob. Mr. Ed

Just a thought, since you use the bee vacuum on a regular basis, why don't you make a hive cover with a much larger hole that you could simply set on the top of the bee vac and then invert the whole thing onto the top of the hive box? Wouldn't the bees then make their way down into the hive where the queen is? I don't know if this would have any chance of working, but it's a thought.

The manufacture of the bee vac has just what you suggest, and it works great. World Famous Mike Barry demonstrates the process in one of his videos. The only reason I don't use it is because it's to slow for me. Thanks for watching. God's peace Tim. Mr. Ed

Hi there yet another great video. Just 1 question what happens to the robber bee's that get vacuumed and transferd to the new hive
@JeffHorchoff3 ай бұрын
As long as I do not vacuum to many of them they will become members of the hive once it is set up. However, if to many are vacuumed, they will fight in the bee vac with the hive bees which is why I stop vacuuming once the robbing becomes to intense. Thanks for watching. God's peace Paul. Mr. Ed

I guess a lot of robber bees make it back with you. Will they just join the hive? Or head home?
@JeffHorchoff2 ай бұрын
Not to many do make it back with me as I stop vacuuming when the number of robbers gets to many. As long as I do not vacuum to many they will not fight the hive bees in the bee vac and will become part of the hive once it is relocated. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Will hive bees kill off robber bees? And could robber bees turn into hive bees if transported away from their location?
@JeffHorchoff2 ай бұрын
If a colony of bees is strong enough, yes. However, once the colony is exposed and there is to much area to defend, the hive bees relinquish the hive as they can not protect it. The vacuumed robber bees will become hive bees to that group as long as not to many are vacuumed. It is for that reason I have to stop vacuuming when the robbing becomes to intense, I can't have to many robber bees in the bee vac or they will fight in the bee vac. There is nothing available on the market that can treat an area to prevent another swarm from moving in once a hive has been removed. If you want to become an instant millionaire, be the first to come up with something that really lasts for years. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

@JeffHorchoffАй бұрын
Delighted to hear you love the channel, thank you Barb. It is not a big deal if I do not find the queen right away, just as long as I get her when I do the removal. Very often, as was the case in this removal, if I did not actually see the queen during the removal I vacuumed her up, and if that should happen, she will be ok as the bee vac does no harm to the bees. Personally, I like finding her that way I can take measures to make sure no harm comes to her during the removal and later when setting up the hive in it's new location. I did a bad cutout this week. Way out there. No electricity. No batery power. No way to get my van close. It was im an old cable roll. No matter what i could not find the queen. Left the box there in hope. But i lost the bees. All that remained of the cutout was maggot infested comb. Tried melting some. Gave up. It was just a mess. Got it ina gatbage bag to burn. It why we do late fall removals at the end of the day . . . .

@@JeffHorchoff Here in CA the Fall dearth makes for a lot of robbing. This year the great spring means high populations in the feral bees and no incoming food in the late summer. We also put a painters cloth down to catch the drips - so we can roll it up and take away. Reducing the homeowners needing to deal with the robbing the next day (at least minimizes it).

Jeff, how close do you think that other hive had to be to rob out this hive in force like that? Or is it even possible to tell? Just curious. PS I love your armed to farm shirt.
@JeffHorchoff2 ай бұрын
I'm positive there are many feral hives in that area and the robber bees that showed up are from several of those hives. Of course there is no real way of proving that, but it's what I think is going on. I did a presentation to that group of Vets a week ago, what a fantastic group of men an women. Thanks for watching. You call them "Robber Bees" but are they just honey bees from another hive or are they a different species?
@JeffHorchoff2 ай бұрын
A robber bee is simply a regular worker, female, bee that belongs to a different hive. As her duty is to forage and bring stores back to the hive, if by chance she comes across an unguarded honey source, her role as forager changes into robber, and she begins stealing honey to bring back to her hive. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

What size rubber bands do you use? We’ve had to use twine and a small rubber bands vertically, but I’d rather cross them like you do.

Are the robber bees not just regular honey bees from a different hive? If you vacuumed them would they not adjust to their new hive? I sometimes feel like a second class person because so many youtubers have memberships and I sure can't afford to join a dozen or so youtube channels.....just sayin!!!
@JeffHorchoff2 ай бұрын
Please don't feel bad about not being a member, I am just as excited to have you as a viewer or subscriber. I only began the membership program because I was asked by so many how they could help besides being a viewer or subscriber, and this was the perfect solution for that issue. Robber bees are regular honey bees, what makes them robbers is instead of going to flowers and getting the nectar from them, they go to an unprotected honey source and steal that. As long as not to many robber bees are vacuumed, they will acclimate into the hive. It is for that reason I stop vacuuming once the robbing gets out of hand. Thanks for watching, I truly appreciate that. God's peace Bryan. Mr. Ed
