Everyone has to realize Rob is actually doing R&D here. This isn't a "content" clout channel. Yes the 4 rotor makes us all hard but if you've actually been watching the videos lately this is just as sick. Stop complaining all of these things are big picture. Building your own parts, testing them, making revisions, buying a Cosworth V8 (big W), making wiring looms, etc. Man is learning and legit telling us all of this information as he goes along. We all wanna watch videos but sometimes they should come with an IQ prerequisite so thumbnail whores know what's going on here. I've watched this channel for a while so I know Rob pisses around and does questionable things sometimes but it's always worth it imo

Rob, make a log from cold start to operating temps. I’m pretty sure there will be a table that accounts for throttle position vs temp and that info will be useful to help with the idle setup. Also, do a calibration again when the pedal is installed. The ecu should manage close loop idle control and using a table with temp vs rpm will make it a cake. First solve all the vacuum leaks or they will make you more crazy. Best of luck, awesome content and loved the wiring harness making video.

The new pedal has a removable bracket, a new custom bracket would've been a better option to start off with. The pedal itself is also removable from it's arm, thus a custom pedal can be used if needed. Due to the assembly, I can't tell if the arm itself is removable, but it should be as it shouldn't be permanently bonded to the electronic components, which means the arm itself is more than likely also able be swapped, meaning you can have a better angle at the bend in the pedal to better fit the vehicle. Using standoffs in any scenario like this is just janky as all hell, I'd rather have a pedal mounted as flushly to it's mounting plate as it physically can be.
@xaytana
@xaytana 3 жыл бұрын
@Brent Cua Doubt it, he already drilled the firewall to work with the GM bracket, with plans to just reinforce the firewall. Also it'd be easier to just bend a piece of sheet steel like the OEM bracket, milling out a bracket from a billet is just a massive waste of material. It's also best to keep the pedal as close to the sheet metal it's being mounted to as possible, this way there's no additional leverage on the firewall, and so that the standoffs/spacer doesn't become a cantilevered component. Keep in mind that a pedal is actuated with your leg, if you flat out floor the pedal, something is going to give in a spaced setup, which is why a direct mount is better; unless Rob plans on forever feathering the pedal with the lightest touch. With the attention to detail lately, I'm surprised the pedal is as jank as it is. I could understand not wanting to modify it for preliminary tests. Modifying it also isn't all that difficult, the bracket is just bent sheet steel and the pedal arm is just a flat bar that may not even need to be bent all that much. There is absolutely no reason for the pedal setup to be as jank as it's going to be.

Although as Sandy Munro says a drive by wire throttle is just a switch, no need for it to be as beefy as a brake pedal. Turned 17mm spacers and reinforcing plates on the firewall should be enough.

22:13 Rob I recommend you use some type of positive lock fastener. Nylox and loctite might fail in this scenario because of excessive heat on the engine bay side of the firewall, it will just melt the nylon. Please use DIN 980 nuts, they have deformable thread which is a positive locking system. Alternatively you can use cotter pins or safety wiring which are extremely popular on all critical fasteners in racing

14:47 While the crankshaft may fit through the hole of the bearing journal dry it is recommended to apply lubricant liberally especially with a thrust bearing. Proper nut torque is important with the crankshaft as too much friction can cause premature wear and a rough ride.

Good overview on Drive by Wire. There are many benefits as you mentioned, along with the ECU mapping for commanded torque / commanded throttle position. There are many safety aspects behind the scenes which should have been well vetted by the ECU, electronic throttle body, and foot pedal manufacturer. Care must be taken when making and routing the engine harness. It can factor into electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues. I've seen a lot of things when I designed Drive by Wire electronic throttle and electronic shift controls for ECUs.

I did the same thing on my 1993 FD, except I used a DBW pedal from a 2006 GTO and custom built a mounting bracket so that gas pedal and the brake pedal were at the same distance from the floor. Perfect setup for heel to toe driving. In my opinion the GTO pedal looks better as well. I have pictures of the mounting bracket and the install if you're interested.

Nice thing about drive by wire throttle bodies is the ability of doing legit lift off anti lag for intense hoon sessions and burnout competitions. Imagine the sorts of donuts and burnout competitions you would rule if you could control power to individual wheels through the use of cutting brakes, differential lockers and maybe custom couplers. You could make the AWD dance at 9,000rpm with smoke and noise pouring out of it. Just one of my many ideas I have written down in my little black book (Apple Notes)

Some older cars used a cable driven tps sensor for drive by wire. They are great because you can reuse the factory cable driven pedal but just mount the tps sensor and then still utilise all of the benefits of drive by wire. Mid 2000's honda accords are one car that used them

The hunting is probably from the missing gasket and that flange probably being warped a little from being welded on. It’s wild that you made it work that well out of the box so to speak. To make the pedal a little more stable you can put a block or something to keep it from over extending and bending the mount. That would let you kick it and not worry about tweaking the pedals position in relation to the others.

You're probably going to want to apply a transform function to your pedal input in the ECU if you're going to drive this on the street, so it's not completely linear... Otherwise it will be very hard to control at low throttle, and will constantly surge at idle, and most of your pedal travel will be in your higher power band, and you got lots of power... I would recommend a sigmoid-ish curve, so you get about 50%-70% of your pedal travel in your lower power band. Or just an exponential curve if you're gonna floor it. As for mounting the pedal, just make a plate for each side of the firewall and sandwich it in there.. Pedal, standoffs, inner plate, sealant, firewall, sealant, back plate with threaded holes to bolt through.

next up he should make a billet adaptor to give extreme rigidity to his pedal mount, also it should be wider to negate the torque of the arm some on pedal twist.

You can cut off the old pedal and weld it to the e‐pedal and bend it appropriately 👌🤙

My thoughts mostly. Just lop off plastic section of e pedal and add whatever pedal /angle / length ya want.

Either that or go with the standard Subaru Legacy. Basically the go-to option for e-throttle swaps as the mounting and pedal are both completely metal so it's super easy to adjust to suit.

If you put a small plate across the the studs you’ve made on the right side it should make it stiffer.

You should use the laser wheelie system that boosted boiz has on their mr2. It helped them reduce wheelies and pb by like .2 at the 1/4

Rob you just need to make a boxed bracket that bolts into where the studs go that will get rid of the movement from the long bolts
