Thanks to you I have gained the confidence to purchase and maintain a 1993 Volvo 850 sedan (110k miles, belonged to a doctor) that is in way better shape than my 2009 Mitsubishi Colt. I was so relieved when it passed the glove test, AC blows ice cold, too. Thank you very much, Sir!

Top man Robert. I own a 2000 First gen V70 (90000 miles) I drive it in Liverpool England. I have a clean example and am making every effort to keep it that way. I am newish to D.I.Y mechanics. So when ever I need to do a job I end up looking at your how to videos. I have done quiet a few jobs now under you tutorial wing. Just had my dash out to check the mount tabs as I have a severe squeak and cracking noise going on. The mounts were all fine but it turns out the last windscreen replacement I had done left the screen too close to the front lip of the dash so thats where the noises were originating from. So a good lashing of sticky beutal tape on there sorted the problem. Your tutorial made it possible. Carry on the good work. Every video you make on the p80's makes my life easier. Thanks m8

Hey Rob! Blessings to you man! Thanks so much for your videos. I just purchased a 1999 S70 with 270k on the clock for $400 from the original owner! I owned a 1994 850 about 5 years ago that had over 200k miles so I wasn't intimidated by miles. Watched your video on what to check for and everything you mention checked out. Some typical issues like power steering fluid leak (I think its from a seal on the rack) and possible ABS module failure. I will be investigating, but wanted to let you know I appreciate you man.

Have had my 1998 V70R AWD, for 5 years. Always good to check procedures and learn, even though belts, hoses and ignition components were replaced new on purchase. The PCV system blow-back check with glove was new to me. It proved to be negative but good to know the work around. Thanks again.

Andrew Oliver The first one I purchased was new in '87. I put more than 400,000 miles on that car. Only had to have it towed once after an accident with the fuel tank. The car cost me $176 per year (excluding only gas). It drove great even after 17 years. Solid cars.

It's nice to see that the heater core is not so hard to access on the Volvo. ( I own a 1990 240 DL Gold Volvo Wagon, previously owned a 1987 Grey Volvo Wagon.)Never changed a heater core though... Right now, my issues are a rotting engine crossmember ( which I am still assessing), and a slack kickback cable that does not return properly. Hoping to replace that cable within the next two weeks...I bought the cable and a transmission pan gasket and filters in a kit...No, I am not driving it unless it is to repair it...I will drive it locally under 40 mph.....After the kick down cable is all set I will start looking into the pcv system.. liked you test! My current volvo has about 251k miles on it..

Great video again Robert! Thanks! If someone can cook one of these engines, that owner surly be an idiot. There is a warning light about "cooling water level" in the front of the owner eyes... Btw, I cleaned the PCV system, and the carter gas still coming out. The bottom hole on the engine (near the pcv box) almost completly sealed with rock hard shit... the situation became a lot better after cleaning, but some smoke still coming out.

lurkbob I have owned 3 or 4 960's. In my opinion, they are the best cars that Volvo ever built. Not sure much for low maintenance, but for the blend of usefulness and lower maintenance than the other white block, FWD cars. I like the '95 - '98 models better than the '93 & '94 models.

Hey Robert! We've put 4,000 miles our our 98' Volvo S70 so far since November. We replaced the entire PCV system and that fixed the pressure in the top of the engine so it is sucking now instead of blowing (your glove test is great!). However, we discovered that the engine is consuming about 1 quart of oil every 1,000 miles. It runs great even though it has 359,000 miles! Do you recommend an oil additive to help "rejuvenate" the piston rings or valve seals? Or any other advice?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 7 жыл бұрын
Nope. My car uses about 1 quart every 700 miles around town. Leaking valve stem seals. Just stay ahead of the oil level and drive on.

Scotty Kilmer said the reason they make interference engines now is because they actually go faster than noninterference engines because the pistons move at a higher ratio and almost come in contact with the valves. A lot of manufacturers these days are moving to the timing chains which are MUCH better than these rubber belts that break and destroy the motor.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Sackstein Hmmmm, not sure about that but he surely knows more about mechanics than I do. I know of some very high performance engines that run on timing belts. They are easier serviced due to their external positioning, and they are much cheaper than a chain. Not sure if interference has anything to do with it having a chain or not.
@mds2465
@mds2465 9 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't. A lot of interference engines do have chains now because people would forget to change the timing belt and then it would break and destroy the motor. Whereas the chains typically go about 500k without any problems

Hello, i own a 850 GLT 1992 from Sweden, I was looking for the pcv and I don’t seem to have this hose going over the cylinder head past the oil cap. Do you know why I don’t have this? Is it something with the age of the car or do I not have pcv

robert have you ever seen an AC compressor clutch NOT disengage? My AC system froze up and then my battery kept draining because the clutch wouldn't disengaged. The clutch is grounded and has a positive switch controlled by the pressure switch right before the firewall. I had to run a new wire from the pressure switch to the compressor to get it to work properly although I think its caused the Compressor to cycle even when the HVAC unit is turned off unless the AC switch is on off and not auto, That last part could be my imagination. Anyway it would seem that wire would have had to short to positive not ground. Really weird.

You said the heater core can leak down under the carpet. What leaks out of it? I just bought a 98 V70 and 2 days later realized the carpet on the driver side in the front and back seat, is saturated. Would that be water or oil or lubricant that leaked from the old heater core? I do have documentation that the heater core was replaced 2 months ago. Could the carpet have been wet under the vinyl mat for 2 months?

Here's a coolant question for you Robert, 1997 Volvo 850 R Turbo with 207k miles on it. No wet carpet; however, ac vents white smoke(watervapor?) when on, I lose coolant FAST, not inside the car though, I took it for a test drive and I noticed when at idle on that coolant was Streaming "Yes, like a small freakin river" on the passenger side. The resevoir looks brand new so could it just be a poorly installed hose or am I looking at a heater core/water pump/ resevoir replacement?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 8 жыл бұрын
+Heinrich Evers Follow the river. If the water pump is leaking, the next step will be for it to break and destroy the engine. Have you pulled the timing belt cover to see if the water pump area is wet?
@heinrichevers8336
@heinrichevers8336 8 жыл бұрын
Robert DIY I haven't yet but I will to double check it. I think the guy knew about the leak and topped it off before I did the test drive. Earlier today I looked under it and saw where it was just excessively dripping from and it looked like under the floor of the cabin. I pulled back the carpet on the driver side and lo and behold, it was dripping from both intake/outtake on the heater core. I'm going to see if I can do a bypass until I can order the replacement part and I'm going to check the timing belt compartment to see if there any coolant in there. By the way, thanks for all your AWESOME VIDEOS!!! I power studied many of them before I made this purchase and PCV, Turbo, HG, etc all seem fine so far. no inflating glove, I won't be able to confirm the HG is fine until I get stable pressure in the coolant system to test to see if the coolant rises drastically when its all in order or not.

As I’ve written prior I have a temp sensor to have replaced and also I will have them check all your recommendations! A few questions I have are ABS light pops on and off and will seem a little loose in braking! Recently the SRS light popped on? Also I plan on fixing the problems but I’ve seen a few videos you’ve done about issues! Any advice would be appreciated! I love the car and want to keep it running properly! Noting I’m not a handyman but am very capable! 56 & eager to learn about my car!!!

Hi Robert, I have a 99 s70 AWD 2.4. I want to add a catch can to bypass the oil seperator/flametrap so i don't have to tear apart my intake. right now i have a pcv valve connected to my dipstick tube to release excess pressure. If i run a hose from the top of the crank case to the can, and cap the line going to the clogged trap, will that work and keep condensation out of my engine and prevent my rear main and other oil related seals from blowing? Also would I have to run a vacuum line to the can?
